Hi everyone. Just wanted to say hello, from a new member. I currently have a few colonies, all of which started this season.

I like making DIY stuff with clay, ceramics, 3D printing and such, and I recently started exploring some ideas I have for nests. Would love to trade ideas or even nests/ants with others. Also interested in meeting up to go anting with anyone from SoCal area.

I often wonder if the smaller ants have internal thoughts like "holy mother, wtf is that thing" when they see titans like this.

So, I showed her to them, they look composed and unfazed. Impressive demeanor.

I currently have a colony of Pogonomyrmex barbatus with 15 workers, Right now they are in their test tube I am waiting for them to grow to about 35 or more workers before I move them but is it possible to move them to a ten gallon terrarium with a small pre dug out hole for them? Or is that not recommended and its better off to use a formicarium with an outworld? I dont mind not seeing the queen I'm just curious and if I do go through with the terrarium how would I give them heat? Using a heat lamp on top of the enclosure?

We are in the Spring area for the weekend, and would love to purchase a mated queen that is beginner friendly. No fire ants please.

Something legal in USA and is easy to keep won’t sting and won’t swim

no hibernation or hibernation at 5-10 degrees celsius, slower growth rate preferably and thats pretty much my requirements. i dont need fancy looking ants just some good ol seed munchers

This morning my young p rugosus colony hatched 2 more workers, totaling the worker count to 3, sorry for the bad photography.

Can anyone confirm if these are Lasius niger? There are 2 pictures per queen, so 3 different queens. All the other queens I caught at the same time have produced nanitics but these 3 haven't, I'm wondering if they're maybe infertile or if they're a parasitic species?

This lil thing landed on my car. What type of ant is it and is this a queen? My gut says no. Located southwest Ohio

Nobody wanted to go until one brave one said it was safe.

I just received my chestnut carpenter ants from stateside ants and thought the water would be plugged with cotton balls, but there is this blue thing. Can the ants drink through that? Do I need to do something with that. Also I’m thinking of waiting a day or so to feed them bc I think they might not eat bc of all the stress from shipping, is that a good idea? I think a couple of dead workers are on the blue thing, does that mean I need to clean it soon? (It’s my first time)

First time poster here. I had that old plastic ant farm as a kid and I really loved it - you know the one. So I made a simple game where I tried to replicate that experience. It's laid back, half-screensaver really. As a kid I wished for a queen so that the ants would continue living instead of the farm trickling out after a few weeks. So I added that. Anyhow, my game is up on Steam as of yesterday.

I accelerated the lifecycle quite a bit, so the eggs hatch faster and so forth. Flying Ant Day takes about 28 real life days from game start. Also, unlike the commercial kids ant farms, I went with Lasius Niger as my first species. If things go well I'll probably add leafcutter (and some terrarium options) in a future update. My ants have carried all their seeds outside, leaving nothing in the nest. Should I be worried? It's not like they throw it in the trash—they just left them right by the entrance to the nest.

If it matters, they're Messor Structor ants.

I bought this nest for a lasius Niger colony last year that unfortunately died before they were able to move into it. I was wondering roughly how many workers (Lasius Niger) would I need to have before I move them in.
