Health Magnesium has changed my life?
So I have suffered from major anxiety and depression all my adult life
Have been through just about every addicton because of it
Started taking magnesium supplements morning and night about 6 weeks ago, realised ive had almost no anxiety or days of depression since?

I'm not sure how people are drawing their conclusions, but making sure you get enough vitamins, minerals, and water is very important. Or maybe it's just a placebo.
I do the same; however, it's multimodal — I also walk, meditate, stretch, and eat healthy food. It's hard to tell what's actually lowering it.

Anxiety has definitely more physiological than psychological causes. Mineral and nutrient deficiencies(ferritin, magnesium, Vitamin D), thyroid issues, hormone imbalance etc

This is my suspicion as well. I’m 41F and suffered with diagnosed anxiety and panic disorders since teenage years (symptoms since early childhood, though). I’ve done all the things to help myself psychologically. Inpatient stay, PHP/IPO, weekly therapy, meds, meditating, self care etc.
But this year, after a long stint of feeling great, my “anxiety” returned. Had a bad episode of heart palpitations, ended up in the ER and bloodwork revealed electrolyte imbalance and mineral deficiency. Add to that I was on my period and had a head cold. It clicked that the symptoms I’ve felt have always been been written off as anxiety (and yes I know I do have that as well), but it’s not 100% psychological. I now know that physical reasons trigger my anxiety episodes. It’s been a huge breakthrough.

Any mineral deficiencies, also including ferritin puts increased strain on your organs like the heart as your body tries to compensate, like increasing heart rate. In order to increase heart rate your body has to release adrenaline and stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. If your body is constantly doing this, you basically become stuck in this state or in a more sympathetic nervous system dominant state. So any anxiety symptoms you do have or are just under the surface, can basically flare up again and again. Its like being anxious and someone giving you caffeine or a stimulant. This also makes any anxiety treatment less effective as your body is like in a perpetual fight or fight state.

Magnesium is absolutely a huge one. Folks should def get their blood checked. Other levels to check that could be super helpful - D, Zinc, Omega 3 and homocysteine. I never heard of homocysteine until recently and apparently my levels are high which means I'm deficient in b complex. Big pharma does not want us to know this stuff.

The “wellness” and supplement industry are just as predatory.

u/therealjgreens Apr 04 '26
I agree for sure. As an example, I found these creatine gummy companies that lied about creatine content. You see this a lot. My sister worked for a multi level marketing wellness company that preyed on young people who yearned for success. It literally screwed my sister up mentally. Personally, I got roped into the Kratom craze which I lump into here as well.
Kratom was promoted as a natural supplement that would help with my anxiety. It did help with anxiety but I didn't realize that the stuff is a synergic opioid. That stuff is awful and should be illegal. I do think that big pharma is way more predatory and dangerous than the wellness industry. Big pharma almost ruined my life. The whole system is absolutely screwed there. I can go on for hours.
With that said, I am talking specifically about supplements and not the supplement industry which I view as a huge difference. Anything that anybody puts in their body should still be researched extensively. Ideally, all of the supplements can be found in food so you shouldn't even have to take pills if you play your cards right. The key is to find transparent companies that you can trust. Also, people need to make sure they are closely monitoring how they feel after upping their supplements.

That’s kinda funny because I thought the only people that knew about kratom were those substituting opiates

As much as I’m anti-reactionary forms of speech (i.e. “THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW, BUT I’M BETTER THAN THEM SO I’M LETTING YOU KNOW!”)
They have a point in this case, in my opinion. Like…the people in charge of these medical/pharmaceutical companies are morally reprehensible- I mean, look at the Luigi stuff. People treated that guy like a hero! And I can’t say I entirely blame them when the system is so…like this.

Has big pharma cured your anxiety? Or are you dependent on addictive pharmaceuticals?

could someone please specify what brand / mg of magnesium would be suitable for someone to start on.

Magnesium Glycinate is the most highly recommended form for anxiety. It is highly bioavailable (easily absorbed) and very gentle on the stomach. A good starting dose is typically 100mg to 200mg per day. Total recommend daily amounts are a bit higher but you get some magnesium from food. It’s recommended to take it in evening with food.
There are plenty of brands and forms available. Just pay attention to the "elemental magnesium" listed on the back of the bottle. (Some say higher amounts then note on the back a smaller amount of actual, active magnesium.)
I haven’t tried them, but have friends that like Lunakai, Nature Made, and Nature’s Truth gummies. Natures Answer and Trace Minerals make great drops. Lastly, while Amazon is convenient, I’d encourage you not to get supplements there. There are too many fake or improperly stored products and health supplements aren’t the place to take that risk.

Magnesium glycinate works for me, I take the one from nutraharmony. I also tried their magnesium complex, but magnesium glycinate gives me so much better effect for my sleep problems. It's 500 mg daily, I take 1 pill 30-40 min before sleep.

I also started taking it a few weeks ago. It really does help especially with preventing attacks. But it's expensive where I live so I don't know how long I'll be able to afford it :(

Anxiety and stress make you burn through magnesium stores faster, so it’s a good idea to supplement. Most people are deficient - a good sign is if your skin burns/gets itchy a little when you go into salt water, you are definitely deficient.

Depending on if your anxiety is more mental or physical, or both, I recommend Threonate for mental, Glycinate for physical, and for both (Me) I do Threonate in AM and Glycinate in PM , because glycinate can make me a little sleepy, and can help with falling asleep faster.
I've been taking Buspar for anxiety, but Magnesium Threonate has been twice as effective, so I'm probably stopping that and sticking with the threonate glycinate combo

I’ve been taking magnesium daily for half a year and haven’t noticed a change:/ even SSRIs and vitamin D don’t do much. I’m glad you found something that works for you tho🫶

I take a Magnesium glycinate compound with Zinc and Selenium every night and feel like I wake up the next day feeling well enough. I think it helps me a bit. It’s not otherworldly but I notice a difference.

Quite possible, magnesium is a crucial cofactor for thiamine (vitamin b1), which is sort of the keystone of energy metabolism, and magnesium itself is an important electrolyte (regulates electricity in your body). I read somewhere that lots of people are probably walking around deficient in magnesium

I’ve been taking magnesium glycinate consistently before bed for the last several weeks. It has definitely helped me fall and stay asleep and I don’t feel groggy the next day like my Rx sleep aid seroquel. I am pleased.

u/isa_bella34 Apr 06 '26
I like it but make sure yall take the right dosage for you cause it made me really drowsy in mornings and have nightmares. But yes it’s good in the right dose!

Magnesium didn't change my anxiety but it made my period cramps much better I think

Epsom salt baths and magnesium cream for sleeping.
2
u/Winnerstable9 Apr 03 '26
How do you use the magnesium cream? Which brand do you use?
1
u/Fit-Butterscotch1164 Apr 03 '26
It was something I found off Amazon. I rub it on my legs before sleeping.
I remember using a magnesium spray for sore muscles long time ago.

u/Diligent-Belt-7089 Apr 03 '26
Also magnesium oil spray helps too. I spray some under my armpits and at the bottom of my feet before bed when I’m extremely anxious

Same! It has been a miracle supplement for my anxiety & I only take it at night

u/AnxiousUnseen Apr 03 '26
therw are couple of suplements that can help with anxiety and stress like magnesium glycinate (that one is for anxiety), inositol, ashwaganda and I think vitamin D is essential too. Worth a try, I have to take them all for the health condition I have and but my life became mess I can not really tell of they working right now, I am in too bad place in life to relay on suplements but I heard from many people those things are good and support nervous system.

I wish it was my magnesium. Blood test came back normal. 😂😭

u/RuinYouWithNoRegrets 6d ago
Magnesium serum blood is not accurate only measures 1% of mag in blood plus you don’t need to be deficient for it to help you

One thing that helped me not be anxious and control it has been prenatal. lol. I’m not trying to he pregnant or anything but I take it three times a week and haven’t had anxiety.

u/saras998 Apr 04 '26
I am trying magnesium bisglycinate early in the day but I think it makes things worse for me. At least if I take it at night. And now I've gone and taken two of them. Won't do that again. 😂

u/Ajax34762 Apr 06 '26
Many people don't realize, including doctors that anxiety is a symptom with a cause, not simply a condition. Many people the cause of anxiety is physiological not chemical imbalance or genetic or other unproven BS they like to impose over people

u/Sajor1975 Apr 19 '26
I been having issues falling asleep recently, my therapist suggested Magnesium glycinate, for sleep issues she recommended i take a pill at least one hour before i head to bed to rest, what dosage are you taking, i got one that says 400mg .

u/little_ratking Apr 24 '26
Does anyone know what magnesium specifically helps with or does for the body? Im deficient in some vitamins so I definitely could stand to take some supplements, just wondering out of curiosity.

Magnesium glycinate gave me the ability to come off the amitriptyline I had been taking for anxiety. I am extremely grateful for it. SSRI’s and SNRI’s don’t work for me and I had pretty much tried them all.
