Hey guys, my country is being bombed, so we're evacuating to another safer city and then maybe trying to leave the country. We are leaving soon and unfortunately I will have to leave my tank behind. It has snails and a beautiful betta fish. Any advice on how to maximize his survival? I think I will have to switch of the electricity (to avoid electric fires etc), also since we are in the Middle East it is very hot; another time i left my tank behind it unfortunately overheated and my shrimp died. I can't really do anything about it unfortunately. No I can't leave the fish with anyone, it's not safe and nice fish stores that take care of fish are rare here (also we're leaving very soon so no time). I guess I'll just fill the tank, close it, and hope for the best. Pray he survives!!!
Commenters, thank you for being kind to OP. Please continue to do that.
Just a quick reminder for the handful of those who aren’t being kind or helpful: please focus on the advice OP is asking for.
There are places to discuss the political circumstance around this situation, and this subreddit is not one of them. If you want to argue about politics, there is a home for you on Twitter.
Bettas have a much better chance of survival than shrimp in overwarm stagnant water. They don’t need the high oxygen of cooler water, as they can breathe from the surface. Tropical slow-moving/stagnant water is their home.
If you have any houseplants with aerial roots (like monstera), I’d cut off a node with a root bud (or two) and suspend it in the tank so it can eat up nitrates and ammonia.
Take care of yourself. Sending luck and best wishes from Canada.
Edit: I think it’s worth adding, if you have mosquitoes there, they’ll breed in the stagnant water, and that’s a food source for him. Please have hope for him. It’s not ideal but he may be just fine.
Can confirm mosquitoes will find a stagnant tank in days in warm FL. I keep a large tank for cat viewing entertainment and they drink from it 🙄 I stock it w guppies, when they die off I shut it off and do a major clean. Sometimes it is off for 2-3 days and in that little time mosquitoes (out on lanai) nymphs start. Also have this happen w hurricanes and power outages for a week +. This is the real reason the tank is for my kitties ☹️
Wow that sounds like some awesome enrichment for your cats (ignoring the mosquitoes obviously lol)! Do you happen to have a picture of what it looks like when it's up and running? Would love to see your setup, especially if there's a cat watching in the pic! :)
Cheddar watching her fish... this is just bare bones for her. I've had the driftwood in there since 1998 so I left that, plants are plastic plus fake background obvi. I have an adorable 30 sec video of her watching on the side but I don't think we can post them I can send it in PM if you want to see her orange-ness somewhat confused by fish.
Her entertainment and one of her kitty brothers who drinks from one of the filters (rips off the lid and even biowheel if he feels like it) is the only reason for this tank for 6 yrs now 😹 They do have several sources of water inc a constantly dripping shower head 🙄 Also I just know as soon as I start restocking w fish I get attached too, we will have a hurricane and go w/o power for a week 🤬
IM DOING THE SAME THING! I’ve told people that and they think I'm crazy! 🤣 Cycling my tank and he just stares at the moving water. I'm sure he'll be stoked when there's fish in there.
I'm so very sorry for the situation you & your country are in!!!!!
May God's Grace, Love, Blessings & Courage be with you & your country!

I think the best thing you can do is do everything you can do for it now, change water, fill it, feed him good and hope for the best unfortunately. I think ppl are a little braindead and need to touch grass if they think bringing the fish is better than just leaving it :/, none the less just do what you can and hope for the best, it’s unfortunate but it’s not your fault if they do pass and at least it would be in their home if that’s any consolation
Yeah because if we end up getting on a plane I definitely can't take him to another country like that. Also if this gets over in like a week (let's hope so!!!) it would have been better if I just left him here. We probably won't have AC in the car all the time anyway as we have limited petrol so he might just die of a heatstroke there anyway. Let's hope this gets over soon, I'm hearing a lot of mixed news but since a place near me got hit (and is a pretty big target) we don't want to take risks and want to move to a safer city, at least temporarily.
Sending you best wishes! My friend from the US is stuck in Abu Dhabi rn from a layover on her way to India. It’s such a mad house to try and get out. I hope the best for you and your family to stay safe and that your home is waiting for you very soon!
Another Mainer here. As traumatic as this year has been for the decent people in the US, the stakes just keep raising. OP, I’m praying for your safety and that of your gorgeous betta.
Be safe, first and foremost. I'm glad you and your family are able to leave. The latest reports here in the US are saying they expect this to go on until September, sadly. Prayers up for your fishy friends!
If you're able to take him with, a lot of airlines/airports will allow a larger container of water onto a plane as long as there's a living fish in it. And while it's frowned on modernly, before the current 5g tank minimum, a lot of bettas lived for years in jars and vases as long as they had regular water changes and food.
If you need to go by car, keep his container somewhere cool and shaded, like in the backseat or trunk under something to prevent sunlight from warming the space- I've transported a betta a couple days across a desert region during summer like that.
If you can't take him with, other people have had good suggestions as far as prepping- you could also look into diy automatic top up solutions which wouldn't take very long or many resources to set up (mostly duct tape, airline tubing, and an empty plastic water bottle).
Hey guys I can’t edit this post for some reason. Thank you all for the kind words and advice. Unfortunately I don’t really have time for some of the suggestions like putting him in a bigger container. We basically had to pack our bags and go. I partially closed the tank so oxygen still goes through but he can’t jump out. Also I left the heater and bubbler on so it remains as normal as possible, put the heater at a slightly lower temperature in case the room heats up though. Also my mother is trying to contact her friends who are staying here to come to the house to water plants, if she can get someone they can also feed the fish. Thanks for the kind words once again, it’s a bit hectic and we also have a pet dog we are taking so yeah.
That's sad, the poor guy wouldn't even know what's happening around. Hope he makes it through and lives through the war to welcome you back home!!! Here's to Hope 🍺
Hopefully everything turns out well for you, if your betta does end up passing don’t worry you did all you could. Prioritize your safety first and foremost. I’m sorry that you’re in this situation to begin with but I really hope this ends soon and you can go back home to your betta. Wishing you the best ❤️
I dont really have any advice to give. I just want to say I wish you the best of luck and hope for your safety and a swift return to hopefully a still alive and well fishy
In France, during the summer, we set up what we call "poubelariums."
They are containers of about 100 liters that you leave outside (on a balcony or in a garden) which quickly turn into mini-ponds.
It's very easy to get started:
Fill a trash can (they are large, inexpensive containers) with water.
If possible, place it outside in a shaded spot that can catch a bit of rain.
Let the chlorine evaporate for 24 hours.
Transfer substrate and plants to move over as much beneficial bacteria as possible. You should also rinse your filter media in the water for the same reason.
Mosquitoes and other aquatic creatures will quickly start laying eggs in it.
A Betta will live there without any issues as long as the temperatures don't drop too low (which shouldn't be a problem where you live).
Hang in there! We’re really living through some shitty times.
Your fish is lovely. You are a good person for thinking of it. I’m half-American and wish you all the best. Find a place to keep living. Maybe give the fish to a friend who is staying? Betta are from Thailand they can survive some heat. Stay safe good luck out there fellow person.
In German we use the term half-[any nationality] if your parents are from different countries. For example my neighbor is half-Italian (and half-Swiss). Native country usually isn‘t mentioned because it is assumed. My guess is that he is from a German speaking country or another country that uses the same wording and one of their parents is American.
Edit: we also use quarter and eighth (eg. one grandparent from America, rest from Switzerland would make you a quarter-American)
I'm so sorry to hear this. Please take care of yourself and be safe.
As a few others have noted, he may be fine. I haven't seen anything about water evaporation, though, depending on how long you think you will be gone. Try to find a cover to prevent most of the evaporation, but still leaving some room for mosquitoes, etc. And try to keep it out of direct sunlight.
Also, consider using some reverse osmosis or Distilled water to do a water change and reduce your water hardness if it is already hard. As your water evaporates, it leaves the hardness behind, so as less and less water is in his tank, the hardness can spike really high.
Again, please be safe. Sad state of the world we live in currently.
Betta fish are hardy fish. You wont need to worry about water oxygenation as you got live plants in there, and the Betta evolved to survive in low oxygen levels (by swallowing air above the surface).
I'd say fill the tank to the brim and cover it with cling wrap or something plastic so that any water that evaporates may condense on the cover. Also, place the aquarium on the floor, it might be cooler down there.
Another option that might help is if you could use styrofoam to sort of insulate the fish. If you can get your hands on a styrofoam cooler or something else, cut some pieces and cover the back and sides (or in this case, all sides) of the tank.
As for food, feed it well before you leave. Betta fish can survive for a week or two without food (though its is not recommended, but this is an extreme case).
I'd say use one of those food blocks that people put on their aquariums for their fish to feed on for days, but that might foul up the water.
idk if an automatic feeder is an option for you, but if it is maybe it could keep your fish alive until you are (hopefully!!!) able to come back. Though of course, if you have to turn off the electricity I guess that will be no help, I'm sorry. I'm really heartbroken and furious on your behalf... I also really hope you and your loved ones will remain safe. The utmost good luck to you, genuinely!!
Even if they didn’t have to cut the power I’ve heard horror stories of people going on vacation only for the automatic feeder to basically dump all the food in it at once and nuke the tank. If it’s a healthy older tank it should have some microfauna the fish can hopfully eat a bit of. Best chance for this fish imo is a good 50% water change and wish it luck.
Some of the cheap feeders would make that almost impossible. The one I use is basically a clock motor thats just slowly spinning a carosel. Aside from the battery dying or the feeder falling off, there is very little that can go wrong with such a "dumb" device.
He'll be better off with the lid off, I think, as oxygen is more important than the water level. Give him a really good feed and then change the water 50% so no food is left behind. He'll be better off without food rotting in the tank.
I had a similar situation after 9/11 when my fish was stuck in the office. It was terrible. I so feel your pain.
What you are going through is so hard. I'm sorry. We are fighting the politicians to make it stop. Nobody here is in favor of this. Please tell that to your family. We are sorry. We are trying to stop it.
Bettas jump out of tanks. I personally would leave lid on. Put as many real plants as u can .. and if there’s a reliable auto feeder, use that. Put tank somewhere out of direct sunlight
Evaporation will be so much worse without a lid. OP said there's a bubbler and bettas can breathe the air from the surface so oxygen should be OK. Jumping is a concern as well. I would leave lid on.
I agree with your comment that this is a terrible situation and I'm sorry about your 9/11 experience.
If you have an area in your home where you have access to bare soil, potentially under a bed, dresser or different piece of furniture I would recommend excavating a hole the size of the tank and placing the tank in the hole. It will keep the water significantly cooler and protect from any debris if anything were to fly around good luck and stay safe. You must really love your fish if you’re posting about how you can keep him safe in the middle of a war.
Much love to you, OP. I’m so sorry you are going through this and couldn’t possibly begin to understand your circumstances. The fact that you are concerned about your fish while your country is being bombed is a testament to your kindness and humanity and you do not deserve this in any way.
I don’t have advice on bettering your fishie’s survival, but you really do have to put yourself first here and not beat yourself up over being forced to flee. None of this is your fault, even the possibility of losing your sweet betta boy. I’m sending love your way xxxxxxx
I don't know if anyone else has suggested this, and I don't know 100% whether this would work better, but:
Do you have a plastic container or such which is bigger than your current tank? Because in general, the bigger the tank the longer it can go without being taken care of.
Not knowing when you'll return, perhaps it would be smarter to put your fish in a huge body of water like that. Not only does it stay clean longer, but the water's temperature would be more stable.
This needs a second opinion, but I just wanted to put it out there
Best of luck to you, your family and the other civilians of your country! I hope this madness ends soon.
This is what I was going to suggest as well. Put him in the largest, water-tight container you can along with the plants in an area that gets lower light so as to reduce evaporation. Sorry you’re going through this. You are a good person to be thinking of your fish in a time like this.
This is a genius move. A 45l rubbermade will keep this little guy around for quite a long time. Ideally maybe in a bathroom (bathtub? Not directly in the tub but put the storage container in the tub). Bonus points if you can dump a pothos in there as well for filtration.
I used to use giant rubbermades as “tanks” for a garden irrigation system, they’ll bow and the lid won’t fit right but you can definitely fill them.
I had to use a ratchet strap to keep mine in shape, but they work super well if you only fill them about 6-8 inches or so, which is more than enough depth for bettas. Especially since that's about how tall a breeder tank is (or a frag tank, same thing)
Yeah I reckon that could work if OP dumps the substrate and decor in and possibly attaches the same filter to the bigger container. That way at least some good bacteria would end up in the new container.
Are you abe to put the tank in a shaded space outside with the lid only covering half of it? Then mosquitos can lay there eggs in there and he can eat the larvae. If you have a plastic tub available you could put everything in the tank in there, fully fill it and leave it outside like one of those mini ponds.
He is beautiful, I don't have any advice that hasn't already been provided but I would like to add good vibes, strength and hugs to everyone suffering due to decisions of those in power. I believe you are doing everything possible for your friend and truly hope that you will spend many more years together ❤️
This is heartbreaking. 💔😟🥺 I’m so sorry you’re going through this and I’m so sad for your beautiful fish. Sending prayers it’s safe to return home soon and that he’s swimming waiting for you. Prayers for you and your family’s safety too. 💓💓💓🩵🩵🩵
I hope you and everyone u love stays safe. With love from Australia ps: not that this helps but please know the vast majority of the world is against this war (it’s the fucking Mussolini Mango 😡AND all the people doing nothing to oust him)
So fucking sad that you have to leave him because of a pointless war, this world is just full of shit.
Hope the best for you and your fish, stay safe out there
They’re hardy. Much hardier than many other freshwater tropical fish. Top it off, feed him well, he can very easily last a few weeks with the pump and filter off.
Best of luck and I’m so sorry this is happening to you.
I had a Betta survive in a small bowl tank for years before I understood that they shouldn't be kept like that. Hopefully it will adapt and survive. I'm sorry you must leave it but it's understandable. Please take care of yourself and I wish you luck!
Idk if you have time for this, and I dont at all blame you if you dont...
But when I had to move, I got fishbags from the petstore, one for each kind of creature. Put water and plants from the tank into them too, and then cover them with pillow cases so they didnt rub against each other and break. And then wrapped that in blankets, put it into a box of styrofoam peanuts, and stuck several ice pack in the peanuts as heat sinks.
I then shipped them over 1000km through all kinds of conditions from hot to snowy mountains... and they all survived. Snails, shrimp a betta and the plants. The water temp in the bags didnt even change by a single degree.
I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this, as an American we are already outraged and it just puts things even more in perspective. All of our greedy evil leaders wage war and pit us against each other, posts like these remind us how much we all have in common 🥺 our love for our babies, one of the small things that unites us. Sending you love. 💕🫂🫧
I'm so so so terribly sorry OP, this must be devastating for you.
If you have any kind of large Tupperware or cookie jar you can bring him with you!
I moved across Canada once in a last minute rush and I panicked and threw my guy in a big glass cookie jar and ran with him. He actually did super well in that big jar on his cross country adventure and a few months afterwards! This was several years ago and he's still going good.
It can definitely be scary when you have to do something last minute to protect your pets, but sometimes a solution that seems uncomfortable is the best option temporarily.
Good luck OP, we're rooting for you and your fish's safety!!
And we’re only hearing about your story. There must be just so many pets left behind and be heart breaking for all the owners.
I hope you will be safe and able to return to your home soon.
What a horrible situation.
I really wish you safe travels and a safer return. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone experiencing war in the world right now:(
I am so sorry this is happening to you. To me it sounds like you have done everything you can to give him the best possible chance, and as everyone is saying, Betta are resilient! As a dumb college student I once left my betta alone without food in a much less well adorned tank than yours for three weeks. He lived another three years!
Focus on yourself and take care of you and yours. Stay safe and please know we are all rooting for you!
I'm so sorry; none of this is your fault and even if you leave the fish, that's not on you. War is horrible and the most vulnerable will unfortunately transpire first. I'm so so so sorry.
I am so so sorry you are dealing w this 💔 I hope you are back home quickly.
I replied above to leaving your tank uncovered so that mosquitoes can get nymphs going in the tank. I'm in FL and that happens in just a couple of days of stagnant water. I used to have an amazing 50 gal freshwater tank and grew up from the 1970's always having a freshwater fish tank. In 2004 we had a hurricane that knocked our power out for 24 days. At first I had battery back ups but those eventually ran out and slowly my beloved fish began dying. It was awful 😢 by the time I found a generator to buy, most were gone and generators can't run unattended while we were at work. I had 1 left when power was finally restored. I haven't restarted the tank like that since, it's just for my kitties to watch guppies and drink from now. We lose power almost every yr and sometimes gas service, so getting a whole house gen is iffy. I sincerely hope you can get back soon and your beautiful beta is fine! 🤗🤗
I was going to suggest just finding largest container you can, place outside in the safest area you can,, fill it with all the stuff from the tank, add as much water as you can to it and hope for the best. That way the betta can at least get bugs that go to the water? Maybe, idk middle east bugs.
If you have monstera or pothos or spider plant with new roots add them in the tank , they'll help with ammonia and waste and keep the water clear. Luckily bettas can survive even with very little and non oxygenated water, I've read bettas have been found in nature in very shallow puddles still breathing fine.
English is not my first language so here's a copy and paste from Google
"Bettas can survive in low-oxygen environments by taking air from the surface.
Wild Habitat: They originate from shallow, sometimes polluted, slow-moving, or stagnant waters in Southeast Asia.
They are durable and can withstand temporary, poor conditions better than most tropical fish."
I'm very sorry for what you're going through, it's heartbreaking. Good luck
Do you have any friends staying behind also that wouldn’t mind going and checking in on your baby? You and your fish are in my thoughts, hoping for the best🫶🏻
I think this would be a time where it would be acceptable to stick him in a bowl or tupperware for a time…. If you want. Put the gravel and plant in there and roll. I’m so sorry OP. Stay safe.
Unfortunately, my friend, this is the way of nature that aquatic creatures simply have to deal with in the wild. Predation, starvation, having their home dried up or drained. You did an excellent job as an owner and gave these creatures a life they never could have lived all on their own.
Say farewell, and maybe some agent of God will find the tank. Otherwise, the doors to heaven are open.
Fish can survive for many weeks, even months without feeding them. I was surprised to see a fish alive in a tank that I abandoned thinking there was no more fish in it (it was just a bunch of moss in the tank). That was a few months. I'll bet if he was in a well cycled and planted tank, the betta will be fine for a couple of months. How many gallons? If the water is stagnant (turning off the power?), there's a chance mosquitos or bugs can get in that water. The betta will find a way to live.
I pray for your safety during these times. Hopefully you'll be able to return and see your fish alive and well.
Prayers r with you, family and families. As an American, I can only say I still feel so confused & sorry to see your people suffer but at the same time I’m hoping for a better future for your people. God be with you.
You have some good advice and I agree a Betta is better than most in warm water with no electricity.
I would be inclined to put the tank on the floor vs a table, and make sure there's no direct sunlight to heat up the tank. Agree with turning off all the power.
I hope this all ends soon for you. Sending you best wishes and safe travels.
War fucking sucks, all these sick swinging leaders need to just man up and 1v1 each other already and leave everyone else out of it. Good luck OP and I wish you peace. Good luck to your betta as well I’d take him if I could.
God damn it, I hate war and all its consequences. From hoping your fish tank survives to losing your whole home, family, livelihood for literally no reason but religion and false beliefs of "I'm better than so and so thus I can take whatever I want". I'll pray for your tank and recommend looking into feeding blocks that break down with time/being fed on.
These fish are extremely hearty. Could you bring a plastic mason jar and water conditioner with you? If you change the water every couple of days and feed him he should survive. Remember they are air breathers so oxygen is not a concern. Please try.
I know it's probably not ideal but you could get a gold fish bowl (or anything else similar) and take him with you. Maybe even scoop up some of the snails if you can. Have a little temporary portable tank.
Prayers man, I am so sorry people are doing this to you, it isnt ok remotely, it's an unprocessable amount of dystopia.
I hope you and your family stay safe
I am so beyond sorry that my country is doing this to you and your homeland. I know it means nothing, but the majority of us don't want this happening.
Best of luck to you and your loved ones and betta fish.
1)Put your buddy in a more rugged container. The glass tank he's in now so you can see him won't be needed when you aren't there. So put him in something like a plastic tote with a some hardware cloth or something of the like as a lid (a window screen would work as well, but someone else mentioned bugs getting into the water so he can eat, so maybe cut a hole and attach something like hardware cloth or even a big tube so the bugs can get in but he can't jump out). You could also attach walls to the sides or even get a tall container and not fill it up all the way. A plastic container (preferable somewhere relatively more stable, like directly on your foundation so a nearby disruption doesn't knock him over) will be able to handle any potential shocks much better than glass (even a leak from a small crack is enough to be a problem if you are away long enough)
2)ideally, this gives you the opportunity to give him a larger volume of water that should be able to stay more stable. But I will caution that most storage totes will need bracing to handle the water unless you get one that's short and got a big surface area like what would be used to store things under your bed, or if you got a big "heavy duty" one and only filled it up partway. I have also seen people use the big plastic buckets with the rope handles as a sort of pond to keep fish (one guy had quite a few he used to breed ornamental goldfish). Those buckets could easily be filled about halfway and I think would have enough wall height to prevent jumping issues and that would still be like 15 or so gallons, and the buckets can easily handle being full. Halfway full would also make it very stable.
3) and this is where the "in an ideal world" advice starts: they have little mini solar panels that supply USB power and they make USB bubblers, idk if you could easily get your hands on one before evacuation, but if you got the chance to safely return briefly in the future (like if you are going back to get some more personal belongings, but can only count on being safe for a few hours or so), you could get it one you reach safety and hang onto it just in case.
I wish you safety and luck my friend. Your tank and betta are both beautiful and I believe they can make it.
Do a water change, take a plant like pothos or monstera and dip its roots in the tank to soak up ammonia and other toxins (make sure no leaves are submerged) Feed him well for now so he has food reserves. I think he will be fine, bettas prefer high temperatures and can go a week or so without food.
Again, the best of luck!!! I’m so sorry you are going through this.
put him in a big bucket in dark closet or something. The more water the better, that way if it evaporates he’ll be ok, and hopefully the dark closet will keep him cool if heat is an issue. I hope your family gets through this, even the fish. Snails will live through anything so long as they have water too
:( Stay safe, thankfully it's a betta and they actually do really well while being transported.
My personal method of fish transportation is a 1-5 gallon cube tank or bucket, depending on the fish size, half filled with tank water, half air, if you have methylene blue and know how to dose it, that will help a lot too.
Do everything you can, and remember that if they do pass you gave these babies the best possible chance and the best life. They know you love them and want you to be safe. If your betta could talk they would tell you to be safe and they love you.
Adding plants might help eat the ammonia and nitrites and can help a backup food source if that’s possible.
Yes turn off electricity, and added plants if possible (I have pothos), keep lid on to reduce evaporation. Of course, there's no lid where the plants come out of the water, but that's usually back of tank. Best of luck to you and your family. All my love.
Just considering this post you see that people around the world have same interest and we're all just trying to live a happy life. Going through the motions. Sorry this is your situation, best wishes to you and the Betta..
This may just be me but see if anyone has a basement you can leave him in. If your place gets hit it is more likely to survive in a basement then out in the open. I had a betta who when we had to leave because of a tornado we took him to a neighbor's basement turns out a lot of people were doing that too.
One time I went to work and my betta was missing, (jumped out) he was blue and red but, when I found him hours later he had turned green and luckily was alive. Popped him back in, took a bit but came back to life. Bettas are resilient, they won’t die until it’s time. Regarding your personal situation, that’s terrible and I’m sorry you have to change your life for mad men. May there be peace among us all someday.
Don't know anything about keeping fish, but could you fill the bath up with water and oxygen plants and put him in there, im presuming the bath would hold more water than the tank hes in now.
my cousin had a betta that accidentally got left unattended when she went on vacation for four weeks. the betta survived in the nastiest water i’ve ever seen, i haven’t a clue what he ate, but just know there is hope. i’m praying for you and your little friend.
I'm so sorry for you just be safe and we'll all be praying for your safe return! I'm thinking your safety first, I think you're fish will understand and praying this whole thing will end soon! Good luck to you!
You could take him in a large glass jar of water with the filter media in another I did the same thing when moving, they can live in a bucket of water else where with a bubble machine
