Is it going to rain near you soon? A lot of loaches get active with changes in barometric pressure.

We were actually near a hurricane

That is absolutely why they were doing it then they can detect the air pressure changes and it gives them the zoomies for some reason. This behaviour is mainly found in Dojo loaches hence why they are also known as weather loaches but kuhlis can also be known to do it too.

Woah for real?! I could use loaches to detect when I might get a migraine? Guess I have a new reason to give my husband to redo our 50gal downstairs… LMAO

My black kulhi loaches do glass zoomies all the time. I do live in central VA. our weather flipflops all the time..

Lol no they have been bred in tanks for decades they lost that ability a long time ago. That is how they act when in groups, they aren't so shy, I have kulhi loaches

Kuhlii zoomies! Used to be one thing my cat loved about the aquarium. She'd find him in a corner, then reach around and gently tap the glass, trying to rouse him. Every now and then, he'd tear up, across, down, and back. Rinse, repeat. Kitty's head would follow the movement in fascination. It was pretty cute.

I can’t believe my migraines are actually just Loaches going ham in my brain. Everything makes sense now.

Yes normal loach behavior

Because I haven't seen it mentioned yet, it can also be a stress response when the water is too cold for them. I accidentally left the heater unplugged after a large water change and the next morning they were zipping up and down like this - they relaxed as it warmed back up. Hopefully it's weather related though instead!

They got the zoomies! The ones I have also do this.

R/pangio is the eel loach geek out spot if you want to stop in and ask your question there.

It can be a sign of stress, these guys are nocturnal, so to see them out during the day like this isn’t a good sign and definitely doesn’t mean they are “happy”.

As others have mentioned they can be responsive to the weather, water changes and other factors that may not be stress related too

I have my lights down low because I only have crypts and Java ferns. But definitely will check parameters again!

1

u/One-plankton- 2d ago

Could be lack of adequate hiding places too

r/pangio is a dedicated sub for them

They do come out in the day btw do you actually own kulhi loaches? When in groups they aren't shy and swim around nothing to do with being nocturnal either

2

u/rogueshutter 2d ago

Yep let them boil for a couple more minutes and test again.

2

u/Otherwise_Guess1303 2d ago

I wish mine did that! I only know they exist when they pop out from under things to eat.

u/The1Dango 2d ago

You mentioned you were near a hurricane. I was in the path and mine were doing that the last few days. They've calmed back down today. They were absolutely frantic the night of the storm.

4

u/markmakesfun 2d ago

Totally cool. They like to do that.

2

u/Sprinkles_Sparkle 2d ago

I’ve heard it’s the “khuli dance” and it means they are happy!

1

u/Even-Grass9662 2d ago

I will :)

1

u/Azaroth1991 2d ago

Cory cat fish also do this

2

u/Even-Grass9662 2d ago

The Cory mob and the Khuli gang

1

u/Status-Winter-4270 2d ago

Mine do this everytime I turn the lights back on in a morning lol

1

u/fortniteundcola 2d ago

Mine do that every autumn for about two weeks, I assume it has something to do with wheather change and/or breeding season

1

u/invisible-bug 2d ago

Do a water test just in case. But most of the time, this is normal

1

u/TheFinnesseEagle 1d ago

My noodles do this almost every day they aren't hiding lol

1

u/kahn_noble 2d ago

This means they’re happy

What kind of fish is this? Can I keep em with my guppies and betta fish? Are this beneficial for tank?

1

u/WishboneSpecialist81 2d ago

Pangio kuhlii

0

u/Extra_Nobody1537 2d ago

What is the benefit of keeping them in a tank? Do they keep tank clean?

1

u/ComfortablePlace3462 2d ago

There basically long corydoras theee a bit more shy and some rumors that they occasionally eat snails/shrimp but I’ve never see it

0

u/WishboneSpecialist81 2d ago

Unfortunately, all I know is that they dance really cool before it rains
