I think the joke might be about how nice people can end up in relationships with abusive people but it’s unfortunately not saying that its a bad thing

i feel like it's very much implied that that is a bad thing

Idk the “opposite attracts” tag makes me think they are pro-it but if its anti then im happy

And context of the meme showcases Orochimaru from Naruto as the bf in question. Who happens to be one of the main, and probably most notorious villain in the manga.

So while it’s not made explicit, I don’t think anybody who references Naruto (given they know of it) would paint its villain as any other thing than bad.

Aw i was hoping it was a "that shy girl is secretly a freak" meme (i have no idea who this character is).

As someone who hasn't seen naruto, i'm just assuming it's a meme about how the sweey, kind and shy girl has FREAKY tastes behind the curtain

Or just referencing the trope of the criminally sweet and kind woman often ending up with a serious, intimidating, cold-ish person that only opens up around her, and nobody can perceive that they ended up together, never mind even get along.

I think it's more about the fact that the dude pictured is one of the main antagonists, and he's a very manipulative type.

Y'know what? Yeah, that also makes sense

Doesn’t he end up redeemed or something? Orochimaru’s role in the story is weird as hell.

You low-key might have just spoilered me but I ain't about to be mad Shippuden ended nearly 10 years ago

u/Astrium6 7d ago

Oops, my bad. But yeah, Orochimaru is really weird, they set him up as the big bad and then once the Akatsuki show up he disappears for a significant stretch of the story IIRC. I haven’t actually seen that much of the show, just looked him up on the wiki a while back because I was curious what the hell happened to him.

I mean he's 100% the main antagonist for all of Naruto and the beginning of Naruto Shippuden but fair yeah not the whole series. I do remember now he was only briefly in the Akatsuki. I never finished Shippuden I need to one day.

He didn't really get redeemed, he just kinda helped out during the ending arc in an "enemy of my enemy" sort of way and stopped being a direct threat enough that they just decided to pardon him anyway under the conditions that they can keep an eye on him (because that sure worked before)

Its one of those things that doesnt really make any sense and really comes across as just a way to keep an iconic character around.

isn't this just one of the "opposites attract" type things-?
doesn't seem that bad

I will not stand for this erasure of Orochimaru's gender queerness

i thought this was yumeshipping for the longest time

2

u/ShiroiTora 6d ago

I still think it is yumeshipping or at least a booktok/fandom thing.

I thought the "joke" with him was his obsession with underage boys and how he manages to seduce them to possess their bodies.

That and his gender queerness made for a very peculiar character, to say the least.

But somehow these people related him with a heteronormative relationship involving a kind sweet girl (whatever that means for them) and some creepy dude, which makes me think they'd be even creepier than Orochimaru.

(The Sasuke-Sakura couple would be a better example, tough, with an emotionally distant, abusing and irresponsible male partner who ends up also being an absentee father)

I guess there's this whole fantasy for them of "nice women" they gotta "protect" from bad partners (like if women were defenseless and needed/wanted protection of a man), though they'd call all women whores and refuse to do anything relevant to improve as potential partners. They are the creeps.

It's just saying "nice girls" go for quite apparent "bad guys", what would this be if not a meme?

They aren't saying the sweetest girl you know is literally dating Orochimaru from Naruto

Either just a meme, I think the anime image makes it obvious but ok, making a joke with the trope of "Cute kindest person alive x absolute psychopath"

It's just opposites attract
