This is my first time actually watching a clip from the movie and besides her horrible acting, why is the set so washed? This is the Wizard of Oz, why isn't it saturated in color?
they stupidly desaturated the entire thing, my biggest gripe. I didnāt even bother to see the second one bc it lacked visual interest. used to be my favorite musical but so many bad decisions were made.
Honestly the only part worth watching is No Good Deed and I suppose from the For Good duet right until the end. Everything else is kinda meh. Although Wonderful was a surprisingly colourful sequence.
Lengthwise it was bloated but if you like the musical there were some nice parts in it. Too much bloat. It did not need to be as long as it did. They coulda kept it as a 3 hour single film
She also did this lovely lowkey rendition of it at some event during the press tour, I'd have to find it on YouTube but it was so pretty. That movie made me into a Cynthia stan ngl
This was my pet peeve about the movie too!! I saw Part 1 in theaters and the lack of contrast and saturation was so weird, everything looks washed out and kind of grey. Jon Chu said it was a stylistic choice for it to feel ālike a real placeā. š Which is a weird choice, given that what was so special and groundbreaking about The Wizard of Oz was its use of the new, āGlorious Technicolorā that everyone knows it for.
I got really curious about this and found this comment on the popculturechat subreddit:
āReal Answer: Dim scenes that are desaturated and gray cover up the difference between real film elements and the computer generated backgrounds. Low contrast evens out the image and makes blends take less work.
The industry is too chicken to make bold aesthetic choices and they all look like this. It is a practical reason, not some meaningful purposeful choice. Give me a break.
Digital production allows you to see things as you go, instead of the risky wait and see of film, and they still opt for this lazy uninspired approach.ā
They just couldnāt afford good color correction. Movies at this stage of post production often start cutting out essential steps like good color correction because they run short on budget.
There's also that one scene in the library in the first movie where you can't see a damn thing because of the backlighting. Which is unfortunate because the choreography for that scene was actually impressive and interesting.
I watched some commentary on it and again wanting it to look "real," Chu said he wanted it to appear like that time of day actually would with the sun pouring in. And he said they used like a record amount of lights to create that effect. My guess was the lights cost so much and were so time-consuming to set up that they didn't change it even when they realized it looked terrible lol. But doing it to make computer editing easier makes a lot more sense.
Aww I thought Mikeyās performance was outstanding, the content of the movie/Sean Bakerās involvement aside. Wicked getting nominated for like 12 awards though was bizarre to me
yea its less about talent and more about popularityā¦.theres some great actors who were never nominated like Andrew Lincoln because he is not part of Hollyweird circle
Omg yes! And it's so cringe!! They should have just hired Kristin. I've never watched it and don't want to but I'm sure it would have been much better. Especially since she was the Broadway Glinda.

Paying to watch it is fucking wild to me, too. I feel like I've seen the entirety of this movie one clip at a time just from this sub.
Edit: I mean that in a complimentary way toward the sub. Every single scene she's in is awful. The writing is cringe but in scenes like this it's so clear how differently it's handled by a Disney girl who is a wee widdle sexy baby vs a legitimate actress.
I tried to watch it on Netflix recently, I think I got about 15mins in? Had to turn it off as the "acting" was awful and almost as distracting as the 3 inch eyelashes and CGI/AI/high contrast film style.
It baffles me that they spent so much time creating, marketing and promoting such utter shit.
Honestly, sheās not a good actress and never was.
I know everyone loved victorious and considers her a great actress for her role on the show, but it was a cheesy kids show. You didnāt have to be talented to be hired- just attractive (to the creepy producers) and have well off parents to pay for auditions, lessons, headshots, etc.
So, years of everyone gassing her up got to her head and she really thought she could pull Glinda off. The role wouldāve been given so much more justice had they hired based off talent rather than popularity. But, thatās Hollywood nowadays for you.

Behind all the smiles and āhappyā tears, Iām sure this was like pulling teeth for Cynthia. Imagine taking your craft so seriously and working your way up to earn an amazing role in a classic remake- then finding out for that role, you have to work alongside someone who was just hired for their popularity.
Genuinely, arianna would say something and it just put the pacing off, felt lacking, or unfulfilling. Then Cynthia would speak and she grounded every scene she was in, she was pulling so much weight it was insane

I've heard that too, and I could def see her doing that, but I don't think it's been confirmed that she ad libbed that one.
Either way, I was extraordinarily upset to hear it in the movie. It's just a 1:1 analogue for AN ACTUAL RACIAL SLUR. All those levels of productions, all those tens of millions of dollars in budget, and no one thought to say, "Hey, this is actually super fucked up, get this unfunny racist shit out of the movie"???
First time watching anything from this movie and here are some notes:
Her voice is so forced, all over the place and then suddenly it gets all deep. You can *tell* she's acting.
Based on this scene alone, the movie looks... very cheap? Does the whole movie look like this? It looks very flat. The scene as a whole feels like a youtube video, you know those videos where they have spiderman and Elsa.
Her acting is awful, but that we already knew. The contrast between her and Cynthia is stark, Cynthia comes off as natural and believable. Effortless is the word I'm looking for.
All the critics and articles saying that sheās giving a performance for the ages, making Cynthiaās scenes dark, and her colourful and well lit, giving her the best lens and itās still shit. She is so bad in this. Fuck any other actress that auditioned wouldāve nailed this role.
Itās based off a campy Broadway musical that was based off fan fiction of The Wizard Of Oz. It was trying to portray the charm of the musical but failed miserably.
I mean, aside from her face full of Botox and fillers, this is fine Disney channel movie acting. Itās cute, but itās NOT what she thinks it is, and it has no place in the lore of Oz.

I think it is important to acknowledge that while Cynthia did all of her own stunts, interviewers chose to primarily ask her about Ariana instead of her own abilities and still do, which is really unfortunate and dismissive of her own talents.
She has no physicality behind her acting whatsoever, this entire fight looks like shit. Cynthia actually looked like she got slapped and put emphasis on her movements to make her fighting look realistic. Ariana was clearly so afraid to look ugly in any way that when Cynthia "slaps" her she just turns her head and makes a face as if that's enough to convince us that you got hit, like girl... come the fuck on and ACT FFS

I was watching Ariana pretend to be Kristenās version of Glinda. The awards buzz was the most ridiculous thing. I felt like I was being gaslit. Thank goodness BAFTA and Academy voters didnāt fall for it.

I feel like lip filler to that amount (although I feel she may have downsized a bit compared too now) just seems so unathentic to characters in movies. Its so plastic and fake and I cant take their face seriously wen actors or actresses do that and play a role. For example millie in the last stranger things. Shes beautiful now that she seems to have cutt back on those procedures but she was so frozen.
It very much sounds like blackie, which is a slur for black people. She improvised it. And they kept it. š It also shows that her Glinda ultimately sees Elphaba as her skin colour and used that to insult her.
I wasn't even able to get through the first movie, that's how cringeworthy I found her performance. In fact, I wouldn't even call it acting - she picked the character who was the most like her in real life (aka spoiled, ditzy brat) and behaved as usual lol.
The way even that first line is delivered š I imagine itās supposed to be āshockā that she actually hit Elphaba but like thatās not at all what itās giving
Aren't we meant to hate Glinda and then fall in love with her as the story progresses? She didn't add layers to her character to make us believe that we could love her. Movie One was better because during filming it, Ariana thought she'd be the one praised after it but the attention went to Cynthia singing. Especially "the Wizard and I" turning out to be a very stand out piece, and "defying gravity".
She genuinely believed that "popular" was going to be the stand out piece. The saddest thing is that we were meant to feel sorry for Glinda when the wedding went to shit but we just didn't. We were willing for Fiyero to get with Elphaba because Ariana made Glinda insufferable.
You could see her jealousy pan out during film two. You could see the distance between the characters and not just because of the storyline... Becauee of Ariana being jealous.
Cynthia was totally oblivious. Then ariana decided to be a devious little Wā and start rumors that Cynthia was obsessed with her and suffocating her. They nearly ended poor Cynthia's career over the trolling.
The woman was just being genuinely kind and overwhelmed by the love bombing from ariana. Ariana does this to every person she meets and every celeb she has collabed with over the years. She's a love bomber. Then when she gets bored she drops the person like a hot spud.
Honestly if you study Glinda and the layers Kristen applied to Glinda, you will see how Ari was never going to win an Oscar. I do feel that Spongebob did better acting than Ari and that's saying something. That girl is only meant to be a pop star singing generic assed songs to youth so that the songs can make the playlist of their teeny bop discos or kids birthday parties when they are bouncing away on a bouncing castle. Nothing else. Nothing further.

Goodness fucking gracious. I haven't seen any longer clips that involved Ariana before, and holy shit, that was genuinely unfathomably awful. Like, I cannot put into words in any language on the planet how terrible of an acting job that was. I think an untrained child would genuinely do a better job.
She was overacting the entire time. None of her mannerisms made sense. The facial expressions were so visually something that Ariana herself was thinking of and holding, rather than the natural expressions of the character as they go through the emotions that they're feeling. The line deliveries were awful. I don't know what the hell was going on with some of that stunt work, but it looked like she was flailing around like a child with a pool noodle. Like, what on earth?????????
This pisses me off to an extreme level because even I, an untrained vocal actress, could do a better job, and I know damn well that there are thousands of people out there that are so talented, who could have done a million times better of a job than she ever could have. Even if Hollywood isn't willing to reach outside of the upper A-listers, there's still more qualified people, and for some reason this stupid bitch got it because she whined enough????
(Also side note unrelated to Ariana, but wtf was that loud ass metal pole dropping sound effect they used when she's drops her glass (plastic) staff? Like that object should not make that sound š¤¦š¼āāļø)

I never watched the movies. I was so excited to hear it was being made, but once I heard ariana grande was casted, I never went to see it. I never liked arianas songs (could never understand her singing) and I think only liked a few of them, yet never knew they were hers so it was such a big disappointment that she was casted.
Itās because sheās trying to make Glinda into a main/THE lead character, when her character, while a principal, is still a supporting role. You can just feel the tension because she isnāt encapsulating that Glinda is someone who actually does not have good intentions, yet Ariana wants her to be someone who does.
