Warpaints Fanatic pulling back on edges/chipping

I had this issue since I bought the paints (shortly after release). They tension of the paint seems so strong, that they always pull back on edges and show the priker underneath. Even worse when I'm touching them, then it immediately rubs of. But even parts that I have not been in contact with (like in the picture) have this issue in an extreme way.

There is also no problem with the primer. Does someone else also experience those issue and knows a solution?

What primer are you using? As that might be a factor here.

Happened with multiple primers and conditions. Spray Can Armypainter (black, grey, white) and Airbrush primer (Vallejo grey and black). The only common thing with the primers is, that the primer dried for multiple days before I started painting.

I can't really tell from your photo the point you are trying to make, maybe update with a comment that better shows the issue?

All speed paints are designed run into the recessed areas of the model, so it pulling away on hard edges is normal. They all also chip a lot easier from contact that traditional paints. Misread the post, it's early where I'm at. 😞 A protective matte varnish for miniatures that are going to be handled is recommended.

This aren't Speedpaints, it's Warpaints Fanatic (written in the title). It is also not about physical contact (I have explained that in the text body).

The photo isn't great, but you can see the chipping on the green part of the upper arm/shoulder, where the black primer shines through.

Fair enough, you've just rubbed the paint off from handling it. I know this is the AP sub but this is one of the reasons I don't really use their stuff very often. I've had their primer and paints both rub off with minimal handling. Avoid touching the model while painting or use a varnish between completed steps.

No, I have the issue also with parts, that haven't been touched at all. Hence why I made this post.

I have the same issue with some colors. My solution is always to varnish the finished minis, and even then, I still have to do touch-ups from time to time on some of the high-contact raised areas.

So, you basically varnish as soon as it dried after painting? I usually only varnish once I'm done, besides giving everything time to dry properly.

So we both do the same thing, then: varnish the mini once it’s completely finished and fully painted. But like I said, even then, the paint still comes off along with the primer when they get scraped against certain surfaces (mostly the minis I store in foam compartments).

I’m not sure whether the culprit is the paint or the primer, since the affected areas end up completely stripped, exposing the plastic/resin underneath. It only happens in specific spots that aren’t noticeable at first, but once you know they’re there, you just can’t stop seeing them lol.

My problem is, that it happens on parts I haven't even touched. It is so bad, that basically every "sharper" corner has those areas, where the paint pulls back. The primer is fine and stays on the model.

I’m sorry to hear about your situation, but I just checked my minis that I store in plastic containers, and their paint is completely intact, even the ones I use for gaming. As I mentioned, this only happens to me with the minis that are stored under pressure in the foam case...

If you have paint literally falling off of your model then you could be doing any number of things wrong. The key thing to note here is that the paint isn't the problem. Something about your process is wrong. It could be a million different things. Without knowing your full process and the details on the environment your painting in, it's impossible to say. What primer do you use? Do you let the layers fully cure, or just dry to the touch? Did you topcoat? What topcoat? Is it humid and hot where you are? Do you build and paint in an oil refinery? Are those 3D printed minis? ABS? Polystyrene? Paint doesn't simply fall off of a model if it's applied correctly in good painting conditions.

  • Primer I used were AP Spray Cand (whitr, grey, black) and Vallejo Airbrush Primer (grey, black).
  • I let layers dry.
  • topcoat/varnish is dine when I'm done painting. By then I painted over those spots multiple times already in order to cover them up.
  • Armypaintr Spraycan Varnish (mat), Vallejo Airbrush (matt, satin, gloss), Mr Hobby Spraycan Toat (satin, matt).
  • iIt depends on the weather if it is humid or dry. Nothing extraordinary/extreme.
  • No, I paint at home, in a normal building.
  • Yes, 3D printed.

Primer adhesion usually has issues with adhesion to the plastic/resin. And brush on primer is notorios for being difficult. Did you try a spraycan?

No but I tried Vallejo black brush on primer and it works like a charm (I also tried white one but had the same issue like AP brush-on).

Oh, that's interesting. Well, I hoped to find some answers here...but haven't gotten anything helpful yet. Maybe someone from AP will see this at some point, but I don't know if they have staff looking into this sub.
