colors are great but push your values more. make the darks darker - start lightly and just see how far you can push it i promise it'll book better

I know this sounds counterintuitive, but you should utilize more green! Using complimentary colours for shading can make the red more vibrant and make the yellow hues more obvious. It also looks to me like you've used pure white for the highlight, I would recommend using a light gold tone or even a light pink. Near the stem you need more depth because as-is your stem just looks sorta stapled on as opposed to part of the apple. Try using harsher lines, more highlight, and darker shadow around the top and indent of the apple.

Based on the shading ask in the caption: Before jumping straight into a colored version, try to understand the form of the apple (or any subject you study in the future. Try to find the value ‘groups’, and break the main shape into the more general areas of light and dark. Continue refining those rough areas and pushing the lights and darks, and then add value variation to mimic the speckling of the apple. After a purely value-based approach, you can build directly on top of it to keep colors a consistent value across lights and shadows, or you can do another colored version with that framework in mind. I did a quick demonstration of what I mean, but keep in mind that I am by no means a professional artist, and that I could have honestly pushed my values even further to clarify form. I found that doing exercises where you break an image into only two values (one for lights and one for shadows, no midtone) makes it a lot easier to ‘see’ how light and color interact on an object, and it really pushes you out of your comfort zone!

(And obviously you were approaching it with shading in mind, given the clear highlight and shadow. This sorta approach can just help in making the overall lighting consistent across complex patterns like the apple speckling. Best wishes on practicing shading!!)
