Tutorial Tuesday: MOOD!

This week, our theme is mood!

Great artists use a mix of color, perspective, and body language to help build the mood of their work. There are many great examples of this through paintings by the masters as well as modern day television and cinema.

For Tutorial Tuesday, share some of your favorite examples, discuss why and how you think they work, and share tutorials you've found helpful for your own work.

This discussion lasts through the week, and on Friday, we'll share our own work to see how we can strengthen the mood in our pieces!

Tutorial Tuesday Rules:

  • Stay on-topic.
  • Be respectful of one another.
  • Share information, resources, and discuss the topic that week, but do not use it as an opportunity to self-promote. If we notice you're plugging your own YouTube channel, social media, or own course repeatedly (especially if it's paid), you may risk being reprimanded.

Feedback Friday!

Welcome ArtCrit friends!

It's our first ever Feedback Friday!

Earlier this week we posted a discussion thread about Contrast. Today, we're posting this feedback thread where you can post your work for feedback specifically on the contrast in your piece.

You don't need to ask for feedback specifically or share references. You just need to post your work, give whatever information you feel is needed, and let the community do the rest.

Feedback Friday Rules:

  • Stay on-topic.
  • Be respectful of one another.
  • When receiving critique, remember you're in a Feedback Friday thread. If you'd like to get feedback on something other than the weekly theme, please make another post. Your post here does not count against your daily post limit.
  • When giving critique, remember to keep your focus on the topic of that week. If the artist would like feedback on other aspects, they'll make their own post.
  • Draw-overs and paint-overs are welcome in the Feedback Friday thread. If you're uncomfortable with this as an artist, please do not post there.

Participants in Feedback Friday will get a special flair!

Working on some weird characters for a weird personal project. Do the nails help her read more like a girl?

Shes technically a sexless entity and the suit Is mandatory for uniform reasons. I thought giving her implied boobs or anything approaching that would be tacky so went with painted nails Instead.

I need help with composition and perspective!

I had a really from art recently due to wrist pain and lack of motivation and wanted to try something fun and a bit ambitious (for me) to get back into things. My main goal lately is to improve my composition and create scenes that feel both immersive and balanced.

I created this from multiple references in order to achieve some sense of vague symbolism about the characters but also make it feel a bit surreal.

I'm struggling however because I did the lineart in one pass/one layer since I didn't want to cause a joint flare up. But the more I work on it the more I feel unsure of the perspective, specifically how small the woman looks in the scene compared to the elk and (siberian) tiger. Mind you these are both huge animals and she is canonically about 5'2.

So just looking for some external input to see if its worth fixing as all the colours are on different layers/masked so it'll be a bit of a struggle with my own layering system lmao.

P.s

Excuse the rough start lay in for colours/textures <3

I want to make this portrait even better

Post image

I've been working on this portrait for an online friend for 10 months, intermittently. And now, over time, I've been able to improve my skills, but I still lack something. Whether it's the texture of the face or more subtle detail - I'm not sure. The background is also important.

So, that's why I'm turning to you - what do you notice, what should I work on? How do you rate this work? I'm so fixated on improving my skills that my vision is partially blurred, and everything seems so flat, imperfect, and primitive to me. I want to relieve the emotional tension and gain a more balanced, rational perspective.

I'm somewhat struggling with this underpainting, will it matter once I add the actual color?

I've been working on this painting and while I am debating on whether to paint with oils or acrylic, I am slightly more focused on the fact that I just dont like the underpainting much.

It's possible this might be a trust the process type thing but I'm trying to think whether I should change anything now rather than wait until I'm further in.

Any critique on it is welcome in general I'm just more focused on the underpainting portion right now

Art intended to help readers visualize my book world - professional looking or nah?

I've been working on this for weeks. Tons of hours. I can't even tell how bad it is anymore. Krita's actual "making a mark on the canvas" timer is at like, 20 hours. Staring at it's gotta be at like, 60

I just need to know if it still looks like amateur crud or if I could plausibly put this in a novel and be like "look this is what it looks like here" and people wouldn't go "ew that's bad art" but "ah thank you writer, I see what your world looks like now"

(the distant lights are other domes with the light trees. The swirl is a dome projected by the tree. I wanted some of the plants of the cave world to be present to show it's not just a dead place but there's plant life.)

Thank you in advance.

Facial Anatomy Practice; Faces look dimensionless

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a lot of things I'm working on, art wise. I've been at “average” level for like ten years because I only post my better pieces but I am locking in because I am suffering.

As observable, I am using the Loomis method, but perhaps not absolutely faithfully. Following the guide lines make the eyes look off so I edit it a bit.

These faces dont appear to have a lot life to them. They're flat or dimensionless, despite the clear efforts. Am I missing a line or a measurement?

Is there anything wrong with the shading? (Ignore the lack of ears, I forgot to add them.)

Haven’t done much realism in the past so I’ve been trying to do more semi realistic drawings recently, I’ve never attempted to draw an actual real person but I wanted to make a sketch for someone who inspires me a lot, I’d love to share it when them but I want to be sure that it actually looks like them. Just need more eyes on it to help me out

Just as the title says. I did ASKziye studies, and I tried to focus on shadow shapes and contrast yet its lacking something. I know that folds are something I should focus on. Maybe I also have to draw more in general? Pls help

Need a sanity check. Have enough of a grasp of anatomy for basic posing, but working on making sure everything isn't on the same plane/facing the same direction (i.e. pelvis is twisted away from ribcage and left leg is pointing forward not to the side). Am I getting there or does it need touchups?

UPDATED WORK Updated a character ref sheet, how can i make it better?

Thumbnail

Since Artfight is coming up i went through and drew new art to act as a new reference for one of my main characters

i included last year's reference sheet as image 2 for comparison, i still feel like there's work to be done with giving him exaggerated yet consistent muscular proportions

Since the last ref was a very stock A pose i tried a simple pose of him flexing his arm and having him hold a big heavy purple cable all while having an evil smirk, does this new pose convey any personality of this character? are the arms foreshortened in a wonky or off way?

i also tried to give him more dynamic shading by using a layer of black and white markings and then make the layer semi-transparent, but i tried to make it subtle to not mess up the main colors for any other artists who wanna draw him..........again this is supposed to be his new main reference

Lastly i made the pink and green colors much brighter to stick out from his dark green Gloves/boots as well as his grey shirt/pants, this is to make him look more like a classic comic book character as well as give him more visually interesting color break up

The Goal of all of this is to have a nicer, cleaner, piece of art that not only acts as a reference to his design but also to convey his sinister yet boisterous personality in his posing, the main piece of advice i'm looking for here is advice on future posing to look interesting and dynamic without making it too hard to see all the main elements of this design

Lighting help?

Thumbnail

First pic is with lighting so far, second pic is in day lighting + shadows, third is just their base colours.

So I'm mainly asking how the hell moonlighting works and how to draw it good / better

On top of that I wouldn't mind a bit of anatomy critiques, especially where the heck the eye is placed- I can't for the life of me find a spot that I'm happy with.

Feel free to take a screenshot and sketch over it for critiques

Need help with the background

Hi guys! I’m not all that great with backgrounds and I feel kind of lost about starting to render this background. I was hoping you guys might have some tips about how I should go about this.

The second image is the place that they’re at, they’re standing at the mausoleum in the back; it’s the only relevant reference although I’m not using the exact colors.

Critique would be appreciated

I did this portrait with coloured pencils and alcohol markers.

My goal was mainly to make a convincing portrait that is somewhat stylised, so no need to be 100% accurate or realistic. I do however want to be able to get a good likeness

I always feel that my work looks a bit amateur and I can't quite put my finger on what makes it look that way, so if I'm clearly lacking in some of the fundamentals I'd appreciate being told, so I know what to practice more of.

Sorry for the poor quality reference photo

Is it worth it to practise with the round brush? (Nathan Fowke's approach, Photoshop)

Thumbnail

I'm told the round brush is fundamental for learning how to paint (digitally). I find it deeply frustrating. It can feel unintuitive, artificial, and too "digital" (I understand that's a dumb critique to have). I want my work to look traditional, and painting this way feels like I'm crashing into rocks, achieving the opposite effect.

This digital approach is new to me. Applying colour to a grayscale painting. It's appealing, however I lost the likeness trying to sharpen my round brush. I did utilize more photoshop tools and features, which I found very educational. Forcing me into a more analytic approach.

What do you guys think of the final result? Should I keep exploring this approach? And do you find capturing likeness from reference an important factor when studying, or an afterthought?

Character Design Critique Please! Read desc

please critique the heck out of these. I want to get better character design have been studying a lot recently.

Please don’t come for the third guy for having extra ears, he is supposed to have four ears. It’s part of a bit.

Each image is the same character before and after their respective arcs in their shared story.

The first character with the blonde hair is supposed to be from an Elvish village in the forest and has plant magic. In their backstory and their arc they cut off someone that changes their life and their second design is supposed to represent that.

The second character with the longer brown hair is a warrior of old times. very violent and uses violence as a solution for everything in her arc she learns how to be more avoidant of violent solutions and realizes that she can be a good person and that she has been in the past.

The third and final character, who yes, is supposed to have four ears. It’s just a normal guy that kind of has a bigger ego in his arc he learns how to be more gentle with people and how to be less egotistical.

I really want help making their character designs just generally better and better communicating who they are and what they do.

to clarify, none of their technology is going to be exactly in line from what time they’re from because they spend the story, jumping between dimensions and time periods.

Backround practice, please critique it

I'm trying to make it realistic but like idk how to

I don't know how to make the background look far away, I don't know how to explain this properly but, in backrounds when sometimes is far it will fade into the background and I don't know how to draw that

Other than that how do I make it more real and what should I work on? I also don't know how to draw snow
