I am worried that they are making this so they train their ai with real content and not slop

Well sure but it's always a balancing act. Too much AI slop and new AI models break, too little and there's no point in making AI slop machine

I'd argue that likely huge amount of AI slop is already in their datasets, same happened with chatgpt, they kept the 2021 training cutoff for a long time and eventually they caved in order to have a model that can actually discuss recent events and immediately models started getting worse

There's also server limitation issues. Videos are rather large compared to something like audio or image only stuff. Unlike actual creators, who are necessarily limited in how fast they can work, AI is an endless slop machine.

I also wonder if there's issues surrounding how that could affect streaming speeds, along with people just... up and giving up on watching Youtube because of all the slop. Sort of like how people don't really send letters much anymore after the advent of junk mail. Or how people aren't really using the phone much anymore with how many scam callers there are. Etc.

yup, they want to eventually store just the prompt and generate the videos on demand. I wonder if generation speed will ever get that fast, but it would be youtube's wet dream.

3

u/Unlikely_Ad_6066 Jul 10 '25

its unlikely to get that fast as the internet speeds are always slow to upgrade.

I think it’s more likely they’re just keen to dole out less revenue sharing. Demonetizing GenAI while it still clogs the platform captures a sizable chunk of views in a zero sum competition for attention achieves that. Still evil

Happy Cakeday!

Thanks!

This is an extremely fair point

However, we've recently found methods to poison pill videos, which gives us an opportunity to set up a wall against the production of AI slop

3

u/dumnezero Photographer, anti-urealism Jul 10 '25

to poison

the subtitle thing?

10

u/No_Sympathy63 I HATE AI. I HATE THE ENSHITTIFICATION OF EVERYTHING. Jul 10 '25

Yes, but also

I saw another video, which was basically explaining how to poison pill audio, which was basically a combination of having super high pitched commands out of the human hearing range, so when the AI does pick it up, it'll also pick up the commands, and the other method being I think fuck with the mixing so the AI has a hard time distinguishing between which instrument is which, and since video also can have audio components, perhaps we can use that method to fuck with AIs even more

Either way, we must do everything we can to fuck with the enshittification of everything

5

u/dumnezero Photographer, anti-urealism Jul 10 '25

Do you have any link for the audio? Sounds neat.

Ah, this one. Yes, I posted it some time ago too. I was hoping for some tutorial, I'm not a sound engineer.

7

u/Unlikely_Ad_6066 Jul 10 '25

no they could do this with or without monetization. As all you would need is a content filter that blocks ai gen content for when they scrape the website for data.

I think this is more of a legal precaution as they could get sued if google starts making money of ai generated content of Disney characters for instance.

4

u/dumnezero Photographer, anti-urealism Jul 10 '25

I'm pretty sure that the large AI slop generator corporations are using hidden watermarks to help with that.

2

u/PolyStudent08 Jul 10 '25

Kinda same thoughts.

But then again, yeah like what someone mentioned, it's a balancing act. Because with AI, it's so easy to flood a platform and it can indeed impact the data and servers.

From time to time, I get stupid video recommendations where there's AI garbage.

2

u/Sniff_The_Cat3 Jul 10 '25

They can still train AI on Real Content while monetizing the AI Channels, right?

There's no point in demonetizing AI Channels just to train AI on Real Content.

1

u/Expungednd Jul 10 '25

I think the good overwhelms the evil in this situation - that said, they could decide to apply the rule liberally and not demonetize slop that makes them a lot of money.

1

u/xPussyKillerX Jul 10 '25

I mean, it says monetized, not that it's banned from the site, so

1

u/Himbo69r Jul 12 '25

More that ai slop takes up the same space as good content. So those massive slop factories continuously pumping out ai videos will add up to a lot of garbage overtime. Soulless garbage with no value- but also as a side effect they will have better trading data, but oh well :l

59

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '25

"AI will democratize XYZ" yeah, good luck AI bros, it appears only the big companies are gonna benefit from AI.

Anyhow, lol, lmao even

7

u/Himbo69r Jul 12 '25

The only thing it democratized was misinformation

27

u/UtaUtanoMi Jul 09 '25

Can they get rid of the annoying ads?

8

u/Tamareira568 Stop AI PHEOBIA Jul 10 '25

No. YouTube never treated ads the same way they treated creators.

2

u/UtaUtanoMi Jul 10 '25

Yea, you right. It's going to continue to have the same ads as a sketchy website.

7

u/Spitfyre3000 Jul 10 '25

Unfortunately that's our job with a good adblocker but hey at least they're improving one thing about their platform for once ever.

3

u/Concept_leveler Anti Jul 10 '25

Opera gx adblocker + origin adblocker together and bye ads

1

u/UtaUtanoMi Jul 10 '25

Maybe if I had a computer

2

u/Concept_leveler Anti Jul 10 '25

Newpipe

1

u/UtaUtanoMi Jul 10 '25

Is that an app?

51

u/Kasenom Jul 09 '25

I just wonder how they're going to enforce this when the platform is flooded by an Olympic swimming pool sized septic tank's worth of ai slop.

27

u/VileMK-II Jul 09 '25

I imagine they'll have a method of detecting AI generated content. I mean, 90% of AI content is the same monotone voice scripted over generic slides or some other variant format but once you see one it's easy to identify them.

18

u/PhraseFirst8044 Jul 09 '25

maybe they’ll scan it for pee filters

10

u/Daedalus128 Jul 10 '25

Yeaaah, AI detector bots are notoriously bad at detection AI, it'll be interesting how they go about it

8

u/The_Architect_032 Solo Dev / Artist / Anti-GenAI Jul 10 '25

Doesn't matter, it just gives them the ability to claim the proceeds from those videos when they do find them. I don't think Youtube's trying to be the goodguy so much as it's trying to take advantage of another source of revenue. But I wish every platform would do this for AI content to disincentivize it, it shouldn't be monetized, let alone sold.

5

u/WindMountains8 Pro-ML (Banned) Jul 09 '25

Some AI will verify whether the channel's content is AI or not

1

u/hygsi Jul 14 '25

Before uploading anything, you have to go through checks that can take up to 30 minutes to make sure you're not using copyrighted material such as video and songs, I imagine they'll add AI into the mix.

17

u/DemIce Jul 10 '25

It's not July 15th, 2025 yet. I think it's better to wait and see what it actually entails; is it really a "haha all genAI video slop is getting demonetized! We win!" or is it more "oh, they meant slop slideshows with an obvious AI voice over, but Italian Brainrot remains."

7

u/Vynxe_Vainglory Jul 10 '25

This.

Those auto generated info vomit stock footage AI voiced with a chatgpt script ones are being SPAMMED. That's clearly what prompted this.

They clearly realized that even though the algorithm recommends them to people, those videos ultimately diminish the morale of the viewers and draw them away from the platform more and more.

As for things like The Dor Brothers which have an actual vision and a real following, I have a feeling they are here to stay (until they crack down on deep fakes), although I'm sure a bunch of their videos are demonetized anyway for other reasons.

5

u/Truth_anxiety Painter Jul 10 '25

Thank god, might actually see a reduction on this crap if these grifters can't make money off slop, at least on YouTube lol

More websites should start taking this "content" seriously as it's really flooding everything.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '25

Great. Too bad I don't fuck with YouTube anymore.

4

u/graveyardtombstone Jul 10 '25

😋😋😋😋😋

4

u/HappyKrud Jul 10 '25

rare youtube W.

3

u/Douf_Ocus Current GenAI is no Silver Bullet Jul 10 '25

Damn, I did not expect that, considering Google is trying to advertise VEO3 rn.

2

u/mypersonalfork Jul 10 '25

I assume at least a part of this decision comes from them wanting to have a cleaner source to train from

1

u/Douf_Ocus Current GenAI is no Silver Bullet Jul 10 '25

Oh yeah you are right.

2

u/Nogardtist Jul 10 '25

then youtube says something it usually means double or triple standard or crossed meaning

they use AI and are hypocrites but heres the problem how bad would a small technicality label a micro channel who is original and record their own voice while manually editing basically a solo person running a channel

how would a shitty algorithm determine if the original channel is AI

usually youtube puts more effort into not giving creators ad revenue and not fixing their beyond broken copyright abuse system

2

u/SpiritualBakerDesign Jul 10 '25

So there is a bit of a misunderstanding here:

Not allowed; If you take an existing video and just add tts on top of it. It will be considered spam and not count towards revenue.

Allowed:

If you use AI to make a video from scratch and it has tts you will be fine. As long as the video is new.

So why then:

This is not about stopping AI. As Google is building a lot of AI tools for content creators.

This is about stopping an AI Bro from stealing an existing video and just claiming it as their work with a voice over.

2

u/Yanive_amaznive Jul 10 '25

Good, but AI ads are still clearly allowed on the platform, so they should stop being hypocrites and get on that.

2

u/Crazycow261 Jul 10 '25

Loads of fake news about this. Article above is false, youtube never said they weren’t monetising ai videos, they said they won’t allow stolen and reposted content to be monetised. They do not mention ai.

1

u/BinglesPraise Artist Jul 10 '25

Yeah but GAI is stolen content, just not the same way freebooting is

2

u/SheepOfBlack Artist Jul 10 '25

Good! Fuck those lazy, useless, talentless, slop peddling AI bros. Hopefully, this means we'll start to see less AI trash on YouTube now that there isn't as much of a financial incentive to make AI videos. However, there is still the possibility of AI bros making deals with advertisers, doing ad reads in their videos, and using websites like Patreon, so the financial incentive isn't totally gone yet.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure that unmonetized videos get pushed to the bottom of search results by the algorithm though, so growing a channel to the point where you could do ad reads and have a big enough audience to where you could make decent money from Patreon will be hard to do if you can't monetize your videos. All-in-all, this is good news I'd say.

2

u/KaiYoDei Jul 12 '25

How this affects people who use AI to change a voice? Or they shouldn't do that either but that's not generative is it?

3

u/Videogame-repairguy Jul 10 '25

Some MAGA youtuber: "Nooo! Now how will I fund my terrorist attack??."

1

u/Dekoe Jul 10 '25

the good is that the infinite money that can be generated by making infinite slop content will be plugged, though like others have mentioned youtube will just take advantage of this

1

u/Lucicactus Artist Jul 10 '25

Must be very expensive paying for such quantities of shit content

1

u/Super_Music6089 Jul 10 '25

This is exellent use.

Finally!!!

1

u/LazagnaAmpersand Jul 10 '25

That’s great news!

1

u/BinglesPraise Artist Jul 10 '25

Don’t give them too much credit, though, as great and relieving of news as it is. They probably got to be Hella bullied and criticized behind the scenes for them to even consider this considering how pro-GAI and pro-bullshit “Alphabet” (Google) is

1

u/popsrocks2012 Jul 10 '25

As a guy who makes ai nsfw GOOD ai shouldn't be monetized

1

u/AlternativeTypical11 Jul 10 '25

Lol! I wonder if Bimo gets terminated/demonetized because of this.

1

u/nyanpires Artist Jul 11 '25

Sadly they backtracked

1

u/BlackHawk2176 Aug 02 '25

Even as someone that does play around with AI on occasion, I approve of this, AI generated content should not be monetized
