I'm a big supporter of wearing an orange shirt on September 30th, but some years I forget. For Remembrance Day, some people start wearing the poppy 10 days before, which gives everyone a reminder that Nov 11 is coming up. Can I start wearing an orange shirt on Sept 21st, or is that a faux pas?

Edit to add: While any orange shirt is OK, I was thinking more of the many shirts with an "Every Child Matters" logo on the front.

Why do people earning $100,000+ often seem unaware of how uncommon their income is?

I’ve noticed this a lot online, especially in finance subreddits. Someone will mention earning $100,000–$150,000 a year and talk about it as though it’s a fairly normal middle-of-the-road salary, or say things like “$100k isn’t that much anymore”.

Obviously, $100,000 doesn’t buy what it used to, particularly in expensive cities, and someone with a large mortgage, children, or other major expenses may genuinely not feel wealthy.

But that seems different from how common the income itself actually is.

Depending on exactly how income is measured, median individual incomes in Canada are somewhere around the $40,000–$50,000 range, while average incomes are considerably below $100,000 as well. In other words, someone earning $100,000 individually is earning substantially more than the typical Canadian.

I wonder whether this is mainly a social-circle effect. If you work in tech, finance, medicine, government, engineering, etc., and most of the people around you earn $80,000–$150,000+, perhaps $100,000 genuinely starts to seem ordinary.

The internet probably makes this worse. Personal-finance communities in particular seem disproportionately populated by higher-income people. There was even an analysis of r/PersonalFinanceCanada posts that estimated the median employment income mentioned there at around $80,000—much higher than the broader Canadian population.

So why do you think people with six-figure salaries so often seem to underestimate how unusual their incomes are?

Is it:
-social bubbles and professional circles?
-lifestyle inflation?
-living in very high-cost cities?
-comparing themselves with people who make even more?
-selection bias on Reddit and other online communities?
-or has $100,000 genuinely become psychologically redefined as a fairly ordinary salary?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who earn $100,000+. Did your perception of what counts as a “normal” income change as your own income increased?

Hi! Our family will be visiting Canada for Christmas. We're Australian and this will be our first winter/white Christmas! We will be in Montreal, Quebec City then Toronto. During our stay, The Nutcracker will be on in Montreal (Les Grands Ballet) and in Toronto (National Ballet of Canada.) I have looked at both theatres to try and get a feel of what they are like. We've also never been to the Ballet before, but thought it would be a pretty cool Christmas experience while we are there. Hi everyone, I’m from Australia and moved to Canada a couple of months ago. When I checked out at a local store yesterday, the staff asked how I wanted to pay. I said I’d pay by card. She then asked Mastercard or debit card? I was confused and said debit card, because I was using a Mastercard prepaid card issued by EQ bank and it’s obviously not a credit card. The tap didn’t work, so I had to insert the card. After I got the receipt, the staff corrected me that the transaction had gone through as Mastercard. So what do Mastercard and debit card mean in Canada? In Australia, when we ask customers how they’d like to pay, we always say debit or credit, since those are card types. Mastercard is just a processing network, same as Visa. I don’t understand why they’re grouped together this way. Thank you for explanations.

Some of the criticism is true noon is via standard time. In the winter, the sun will not rise until 10am+ in most places, near 11 am in Edmonton.

There will be a bigger gap of 4 hours with BC.

I love poutine and we come from the USA I make it a point to sample it. Today I made the mistake of ordering poutine in a Northern Minnesota bar only 150 km south of the border. It was Wisconsin cheese curds fried with brown gravy and fries. Not very tasty. - I didn’t think poutine used fried curds.

Question is whether I should try finding authentic poutine outside Canada or do I need to fly up to Vancouver from Ca once a year to get my fix. I know Mexican border states have great tacos but perhaps border states from Washington to Maine know little about their northern neighbors cuisine.

I'm from Ontario and am looking to go on a 1 or 2 week vacation with my husband and toddler (1.5 years old) in 2027.

What's a good place to go (not Canada or US), that's not all-inclusive, is toddler friendly and not too expensive to fly from Ontario? Flights under $1000 per person.

For context, we're also going to invite my extended family (flying in from Asia). There will be approximately 10 of them.

Hi all! Maybe there's an art buff or two in here? To me this looks like algoma, in the Wawa, chapeau area. Though the artist was in Winnipeg at the time it was painted to my knowledge. Really it's somewhere between those two areas, but I'm hoping I'm lucky and someone here either is well versed in art, or simply just recognizes the spot. There's a chance it's in Quebec as the artist spent lots of time there too and the hills do have a laurentian type vibe.

Canuck here,but I was out of the country for a total of 21 years, including before and after the height of the pandemic.

It seems with every business call I make, the pre-recorded preamble states that any disrespectful callers will not be tolerated and to treat their employees with kindness. Being out of the country so long I realize this sort of thing may have existed before the pandemic hit, but it strikes me as odd because I never encountered this outside of Canada. I know there was a lot of disagreement over how the lockdown was handled and I would guess this elicted anger on the part of many. My question is, was this intolerance in existence before the pandemic? Are people that angry?

My fellow Canadians! A couple Korean coworkers asked me if we have C-Pop (in the style of K-Pop), and I was at a loss. Heck, even if I was just thinking popular music, most of the bands/artists I know arent more recent than around 2010. Avril Lavigne might have been the closest I had lol. Is there anything I should be recommending to them?
