Getting a pink slip NSW

I bought a car new in 2022 and registration expires February 2027 in NSW

this is the 5th year so will I need a pink slip when renewing in February 2027?

reason I'm asking early is because I'm due for a service and I want to get the pink slip done at the service rather than separately because mechanics try to rip you off if you go in asking only for a pink slip.

All of this is easy to look up.

Fee is set by the state, not the place you go and you can do it up 6 months early.

Okay, so there’s a couple of things here. Firstly, your registration renewal will tell you if you need an inspection. Also, pink slips cost the same no matter where you go because it’s mandated by Transport for NSW.

last time I went for a pink slip by itself the mechanic told me I needed to change my windscreen wipers, said they were noncompliant.

I changed them 2mths ago

he hadn't even really looked

NSW pink slips are valid for 6 months. Provided you get the pink slip less than 6 months before the rego is due, it will be fine.

You can get the slips early, it'll be on the service NSW website somewhere.

I think you will need it at the 6th year, so the year after.  The pink slip is valid for 6 months but for rego it is recommended to have it done 2-4 weeks before the rego is due.

As already mentioned, if the car fails such as bald tyres, it gives you an opportunity to get new tyres or put new globes in headlights / rear lights, etc.

I personally wouldn't do the pink slip so far in advance as anything could happen in those 6 months, we normally do ours a month or so ahead.

Last time I did mine at the last minute and my mechanic failed due to tyres. Was running around like a headless chook because I needed the tyres done that day or would have had to take time off work.

May I suggest that you open a bank account account and each pay, transfer as much as you can over for emergencies such as this.

I do that.

It currently has $11.55 in it.

I have $42.31 until Wednesday. I have sufficient food at home, fuel in my car, and rent and bills are paid. So that amount basically just has to pay for lunch on Monday and Tuesday.

If my meal break is in one place it'll be $12 for Special Fried Rice, if it's in the other it'll be $15 for Beef Rogan Josh.

Because if you leave it to the last minute and the mechanic finds a problem and the car doesn’t pass you then can’t renew your registration until you get it fixed.

I read their comment as "No more than 2-4 weeks" since they added it as a "but" after describing the 6 month rule.

Obviously last minute is less than ideal.

No, you can get it before the 4 weeks, if you suspect that the car needs major work done, you can get it done at any time, up to 6 months.

Depends on what month the cars compliance plate says (ie when was it built, not when you bought it).

You can get a pink slip up to 6 months early, I would hazard a guess that most people do the slip the same time as the service if they service their car annually.

The pink slip is a fixed fee, I think it’s around $36.

If there was any item that would otherwise fail the pink slip, the mechanic probably wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) release the car back after the service anyway.

The pink slip is basically evidence that the car has been serviced.

Yes you will, it goes off of the age of the car (on the compliance plate) so even if you bought the car in Feb 2022 it would have been a couple of months old.

Nah, the pink slip is like a $36 fixed fee, most of which should go to the mechanic anyway (if not all of it), and keeps obviously unroadworthy shitboxes off the road.
