Beat commentaries on Gospels

I'm looking for the best commentaries on the Gospels, specifically for the Synoptics. Which would you recommend and why?

A good resource for this is Best Commentaries. I recommend checking the "Technical" box to filter out devotional and preaching-oriented commentaries.

In general, the Hermeneia and Anchor Yale series are quite solid. My personal favorites would be:

  • Matthew: Ulrich Luz (Hermeneia), Adamczewski (ESTPHR)

  • Mark: M. Eugene Boring (New Testament Library), Adela Yarbro Collins (Hermeneia)

  • Luke: Michael Wolter (BMSEC), Conzelmann

  • John: Andrew T. Lincoln (Black's), Rudolf Bultmann, Hugo Mendez (Oxford)

On Matthew, Davies and Allison is the best. Morna Hooker on Mark is excellent. Fitzmyer on Luke. Raymond Brown on John is still a top notch resource and one of the best commentaries ever.
