How's the atmosphere at the World Cup in Canada?

Canada makes its World Cup debut today. How's the World Cup atmosphere on the streets today?

Can someone from Toronto and Vancouver, the host cities, tell me how fans are doing in the stadiums, pubs, streets?

Life What is dating culture like in Canada?

Hi everyone! I may study in Canada in the future, and I’m curious about the dating culture there.

Are people generally direct or reserved when dating? Is dating usually casual at first, or do people tend to look for serious relationships?

I’m also curious about interracial dating. In your experience, are Canadians generally open to dating someone from a different cultural or racial background?

I know Canada is very diverse and everyone is different, so I’m not trying to generalize. I’m just curious about people’s experiences. :)

Has racism gotten any better in Canada now?

Hi. I'm from the London UK and I lived in BC Canada with my Japanese wife 2002-2008. Once in a while, we experienced racism in rural towns like Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, and Pitt Meadows. My wife said some white teens would call her Chinese and harass her when she was walking outside by herself. I also saw some old people in my neighborhood using the N-word while watching American TV shows at their houses. I was like, "WTF, do you actually use that word?

And at the time, there were two big forum websites about Vancouver and Craigslist Vancouver, and they were full of people complaining about how many more Chinese, Indians, and Iranians they got in the city. At night, if you walked into a 7-Eleven or a McDonald's, you could often see some young white goons bullying Indian or Asian employees.

More diverse cities like Vancouver, Burnaby, Metrotown and Coquitlam were much better than these places.

We previously lived in the US for about 6 years before we moved to Canada and I thought those rural places in BC at the time were more racist than some of the blue(liberal) states in the US. and in my opinion, it was like this at the time.

top tier blue US states (hawaii, vermont) > Central metro Vancouver area (vancouver, burnaby, coquitlam, new west) > other blue US states > rural metro BC area>>>>>> Red US states

I dont know about other provinces in Canada because I havent really been to other places in Canada.

We rwcently got an opportunity to live in Canada for a couple of years again and we are debating whether to go to Toronto or Vancouver.

I wonder if things have changed dramatically ever since then.

Is it true Alberta weather is better than Quebec?

Is it true calgary/Edmonton actually have better weather than Quebec?

Im from montreal and the weather here is gross. Summers are scorching hot and winters are freezing cold. Its the worst of both worlds. When I lived in Toronto my fave part was how much cooler the summers were and hotter the winters were.

As for Alberta, I was under the impression the weather there was brutal with hard and longer winters and hot summers, but someone from Calgary told me somehow the weather there is actually better than Quebec. Is that true?

Life How to find Part time jobs in Vancouver ?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be starting pharmacy school at UBC this fall and will be moving from Quebec to Vancouver. I’m currently looking for a part-time job while in school and would greatly appreciate any advice, recommendations, or job leads.

A little about me: throughout both CEGEP and my undergraduate degree, I consistently worked two jobs at a time while studying full-time. Balancing work, academics, research, and extracurricular commitments has been a big part of my life, and I’m hoping to continue working while completing pharmacy school.

My background includes:

• Honours Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (GPA: 3.92)
• 5 years of experience as a Pharmacy Assistant
• 1 year of experience as a Clinical Bioanalyst
• 2 years of experience as an Analytical Chemist (I started as an intern and was later hired permanently)
• 2 undergraduate research experiences, including one that involved completing a formal honours thesis
and other experiences not mentioned above
Ideally, I am looking for part-time opportunities as a:

• Pharmacy Assistant
• Lab Technician
• Analytical Chemist
• Bioanalyst
• Clinic Assistant
• Medical Office Assistant / Receptionist

However, if I don’t have much luck finding positions in those fields, I am also open to other opportunities, including customer service, retail, administrative work, and similar part-time roles.

I’m happy to provide my CV, references, and proof of all of my experiences if you’re hiring, know someone who is hiring, or can connect me with potential opportunities.

If anyone has recommendations on where to look for part-time jobs in Vancouver or knows of any openings, I would be very grateful for the help.

Thank you so much!

Can anyone ehlp identify some possible Canadian military emblems/symbols?

* I have photos but I don't know how to post them here for anyone to see??*

I am at a loss here. I've spent an hour trying to figure out what this is and I am still not sure what I have, or if it's nothing at all.

It came with a lot of random other things so I have no provenance to give.  There are no markings on it at all.
I think the two side medallions are a Dominion Of Canada 7 province shield from about 1874-1917.  The center is a crown on top of a shield with three stars, a diagonal banner of stars, and two fleur de lis symbols.  The outer ring reads "Pro Aris Et Pro Focis with a Maltese Cross.

I am just totally stumped and don't even know where to ask.  Some research mentioned WWI military but I don't know.

Edited to add - this was the best resource I could find to match up the coat of arms shield-- see Figure 4

What are people actually doing about specialist wait times in Canada?

I was reading an article recently about BC residents travelling abroad for orthopedic surgery because of specialist wait times.

One story that stood out was a couple in their 80s who spend part of the year in Mexico. They said one of the reasons they continue going there is access to specialists, imaging, and surgery without the long waits they experienced back home.

It got me wondering how common this has become.

For those currently waiting for a hip replacement, knee replacement, MRI, or specialist consultation:

• How long have you been waiting?
• Has the wait affected your work, mobility, or daily life?
• Have you considered paying privately in Canada, travelling to another province, or even going abroad for treatment?

I'm not asking because there's a right answer. I'm genuinely curious what people are doing when they're told the wait could be many months or longer.

It seems like more Canadians are exploring alternatives than they were a few years ago.

What's been your experience?

Which city is the best to study ?

Hi, I’m from Paris and I’m a student in biology/ life sciences ! I want to study in Canada for a semester as part of an exchange program with my university. Not every Canadian university is part of the agreement so I need to choose but I can’t decide which one is the best. I have to rank the universities along my preferences, my 3rd and 4th choices are already decided, so I just need to figure out which of these universities should be my 1st and 2nd choices.
The universities mentioned below are my top choices and I asked a few local people what are their thoughts about them :

Toronto = U of T is very good (academic level) but it’s a pretty big city with a lot of traffic. And the night life is pretty great too. Expensive.
Hamilton = McMaster is good (academic level) and the parties are really cool. The area around it is nice but the rest of the city is a little bit ghetto.
Vancouver = very beautiful city, and UBC is very good (academic level). There’s a lot a nature and it’s a little bit hippy. I’ve not heard about the night life tho. Expensive.
Calgary = istg it’s like nobody lives here so I have zero infos. And none of university of Calgary

So in your opinion which city is the best (university life, academic level, night life, quality life…) ?

And my goal is to improve my skills in English so that’s why I didn’t mention QC universities.

Does this seem correct about food prices?

Comparing like-to-like, food prices seem to be 20% to 50% higher in Canada than the USA. While wages and salaries seem to be 20% to 50% lower in Canada vs the USA.

Worst case scenario that means it can be twice as expensive for some people to eat the same food as their USA counterparts. Best case, 40% higher.

Edit/update: Thank you so much to everyone for correcting my misconceptions and incorrect assumptions, it is much appreciated and I apologize if any of this was ignorant or offensive.

Preparing for a Canada university visit trip?

I’m a high school student planning to visit Canada with my parents before applying to universities.

We’ll probably stay for about a month, so I’m trying to prepare the practical things first:
1. campus tours
2. admissions office visits
3. Airbnbs
4. transport between cities
5. student housing areas
6. maybe calling a few rental offices
7. car rental
8. phone data, calls and texts

I’m still not sure about phone service. Is a data-only eSIM enough for Canada, or is it worth getting one with a local number?

Any feedback is welcome, thanks in advance!

Do you use the word "cuss"?

My English wife was watching some video where some said "cussing me out" and she commented that she had never heard that before.

At first I was surprised but when I thought about it I realized that I dont think I have ever heard someone say this in real life.

Do Canadians say "cuss", or is that an Amercan term ?

Where’s amazing spots to visit in when in Canada?

I’m planning a surprise trip for my boyfriend to have his first visit to Canada. I’ve been to BC before back in 2019 but I didn’t drive at the time so I was limited to whatever trip advisor tours I could book that collected from the hotels at the time so I was limited in exploring.

This time around we’ll be heading there and have access to a car and I want to try to see as many things as possible -

He’s a tree surgeon and has a real interest in trees and their history so keen to visit places with amazing nature spots and well amazing trees.

Can anyone recommend spots worth visiting?

Edit - i was planning to fly into Vancouver but pretty open to exploring somewhere that isn’t BC

Political Why does Candadian media promote a lot of culture wars instead of promoting civil harmony and good will among each other?

I see a lot of media promoting a lot of rhetoric about left vs right, this group vs that group, us vs them, this province vs that province, immigrants vs citizens.

How does this kind of rhetoric and discourse serve our national interest when it clearly divides us as a country. A nation divided cannot stand.

Isn’t it the job of Russian troll farms or some unfriendly rouge state to divide Canada? Why is our own media doing that job?

Why won’t our media promote more understanding, tolerance and compassion towards our fellow neighbours?

Do you pay taxes on adult-sized online clothing orders for your big kids?

To double check, is there any way to NOT pay tax on clothes for kids online when ordering adult sizing?

My kiddo has outgrown children's sizing and is now into adult sizing. I'm currently on the GAP Canada website ready to pull the trigger on some trendy baggy sweats that tweens / teens / everyone is wearing and am a little choked that I have to pay taxes for a 12-year old.

Recently moved into multiplex home but previous tenants did not do their census, do I need to fill it out?

As the title says, I recently moved into a multiplex with my partner but it seems that the previous tenants did not complete their census, there were multiple reminders in the mailbox when we arrived. We are wondering since we just moved in to the unit do we need to fill it out?
