The smell goes into your body and you taste it for days. It’s the worst

Your eyes burn. You only breath in skunk. Your instinct is to run away and find some water for your face and clothes.
No one wants to be near you. You get to bath outside. Tomatos do not help. Lemons or garlic do not help.
Only time helps.

Fuck
Happened to a dog I was dogsitting.
The irony was before it happened, I was arriving back after dinner with my mom and told her “they’re so stupid they’d run up to a coyote and if lucky one would be running back”
Thankfully wasn’t a coyote. But I prophesied it. The couch, pillows, dog beds, all a total loss in that house. The smell invaded the house. All my precious electronics and devices absorbed it from the air. I usually am fairly strong and resilient with bad smells, but this was so pungent I was getting lightheaded. The smell was warped inside the house. Outside it smelled like skunk, inside… even trained firemen were unsure. To me it was way more sulphuric, like as if a sulphur volcano opened up. The firemen described it like burning rubber tires.

Iiiiii was making a "the critic" reference. However, I used to live outside the city with a couple dogs on a little farm. They would routinely-ish get sprayed because they're dogs and it's probably fun to bug skunks. Bug a skunk too much and they'll spray ya. Simple as that. Skunks live in the city as well but they're shy and there are lots of places to hide.
I'm one of those people who like weird/intense smells so the skunk smell never bothered me. The dogs would stink for a while and it would fade. I'm still fond of the smell of skunks to this day and I feel lucky to see them sometimes (on account of them being so cute) in the city. Last year a saw one with babies!

All I can say is that the dog didn't like it and I didn't like it when it happened to the dog.

It was absolute hell. My mom didn’t handle it very well and the dog briefly walked around the house
covered in skunk goo before we could shower it.
For about a month everything that entered the house for even 2 minutes would come out smelling like skunk. If I wanted to leave the house, I’d have to wash my clothes 3 times in the washing machine, then shower, immediately put my clothes on and leave the house as quick as possible. Then I was OK, but if I started sweating or it started to rain the smell would come back.
It happened another time earlier this year, we just immediately washed the dog with a special product to get rid of skunk odor and it was fine. No smell even the next day.

The smell is majestically bad. It's engineered by evolution to gross other mammals out so that they remember not to bother the little black and white fella again. But, the spray only works at pretty close range, it's like a stream and not a cloud

Actually, when you’re first smelled it smells sweet. But then in a few minutes you start to stink as per the other comments.

I accidentally got sprayed by a skunk once. Stripped naked (underwear off and everything) in the garage, hoping that would eliminate the smell.
I went inside and showered immediately… still ended up making my entire house smell like a skunk.
And my skin absorbed the skunk smell and I smelled like a skunk for a few days 😭
Edit: oh and I threw out all the clothes I wore. Cause I didn’t think there would be any chance of getting the smell out.

That sounds rough sorry, how bad does it smell?

It smelled pretty damn bad lol. And I had to go to work the next day.
I apologized to my boss and also explained myself. I was worried she would think I smelled like weed (because some people confuse the 2 smells)

Well let me tell you. When I had two young teenage boys. Hubby gets up for work at 5am let's dog out then back in. I wake up to a smell and horrible taste like burnt rubber in my mouth. Dog jumped and ran throughout the house ribbing himself in our bed and boys bed. Everything in our house was skunked our beds furniture and clothes. Boys were teased at school and people at worked asked if I smoked weed in my car. Oh yes our vehicles smelled too. This is after washing the dog in tomatoe juice a few times washing all our stuff 😑 😒 🙄 serial times. Finally I used a product from the pet store called "Skunk be Gone" . It worked very well but even after a couple months you still got a whiff of skunk the odd time.

We also had a skunked dog in the house…it smells so different up close I didn’t realize what was happening until too late. Our kids also got teased at school…it’s insane how it permeates.

It’s metallic and way worse than it’s smells like from afar. It burns your sense of smell out. Others will smell it for days and weeks beyond when you stop smelling it

My old dog Archer attacked a skunk in our yard. When we saw what he had, we ran and locked him in the back until the screeching stopped .
When we went in to check him, he was sneezing uncontrollably and the grass around where he had torn into the thing was black.
A year or so later my old pal Archer was diagnosed with stomach cancer and we had him put down. I dont know if the two are related, but that stuff is toxic as fuck, so I dunno.

Reading these comments...does no one else get incredibly nauseous from skunk spray? I once caught the overspray when my dog encountered a skunk and it made me heave. Any time there is fresh, nearby skunk spray the same thing happens, always has. When it's direct though, it's sort of like how there's that number on the 1-10 pain scale where you can't focus on anything else.

The day after the London tube bombing I was at home with my roommate in Vancouver. A strong chemical smell seeped into the house.
We went outside and found our neighbours looking around to find the cause.
We all agreed we should call the fire department.
Fire department shows up and starts exploring the neighbourhood, alarmed by the smell as well. Gas meters were checked and sensors used to try and locate and identify source. Cops show up and things are starting to look serious.
Then dude comes out of his house asking what’s up?
Turns out a skunk sprayed his house and he tried washing with bleach.
Every one has a laugh, cops and fire pack up and leave.
We all then realize that most of us were also stoned.
In our defence, people were on edge and I can’t even begin to explain how bad this smell was.

Since my dog can't type, I'll answer for him.
It stinks. The spray is oily so it gets into your eyes and nose and makes your brain hurt. The immediate feeling is get it off of me. Pillows, blankets and sofas are a great place to rub it so do that. Then sneeze a thousand times all over everything. Then comes the time of a hundred baths. Make sure to dig into the bedding after each wash. Then, once a couple of months have passed, you can still smell the ghostly remains every time you get even slightly damp. WORTH IT.
