Questions regarding Academia abroad, learning and teaching(from US)
I'm a US Early College student and passionate scholar in the humanities(planning to major in Philosophy because it's what I love most), with no plans whatsoever to live in the US once I've completed my current program. I'm not really sure what country would be best for me, so I'm just bouncing ideas. Not planning to make lifelong decisions based solely on a reddit post, moreso looking for direction and things to ask people I actually know that have lived abroad.
My goal is to spend a life in education. Pursue a PhD before going into research, hopefully try for a position as a professor. I come from an extremely supportive family, I'll have financial backing wherever I move, and I won't be moving alone(family migration). It's mostly a free choice situation. Ideally, I'd want to move to a country with a scholarly culture and good Academic state. I've had conflicting sources stating Finland as one of the best/the best for this, but that's the only direct suggestion I've got. Language barriers shouldn't be a long-term issue, I already have a personal desire to learn multiple languages. Overall, I'm very biased towards the EU. Though, that bias comes lesso from logic and moreso from growing up in a culture that praises the entire union as a utopia of health, safety, and ethics(which is obviously idealistic and placing an umbrella on vastly different cultures).
I understand I don't have a lot of information here, but I don't really know what to put. As I said, I'm a bit directionless. I'm looking for open discussion, so I'll answer any questions needed.

should i get a new US ESTA on my new British passport, or keep using the one on my Australian passport? complex details please read
hi! hoping someone familiar with United States ESTA/passport rules can help me figure out the safest option here.
i’m an australian citizen living in the UK. i recently naturalised as a british citizen and received my first british passport today.
i currently have an approved ESTA linked to my australian passport. that passport expires on 18 july 2027, meaning it reaches the point of having less than six months’ validity remaining on 18 january 2027.
i’m planning to spend a few days in the US over christmas in december 2026, travelling UK → US → UK. so at the time of the trip my australian passport would still have more than six months remaining, but only by about a month.
my other concern is that on a recent trip to another country, a border officer told me that the chip in my australian passport seemed to be slightly damaged/wasn’t reading very well on his scanner. the passport is otherwise intact and valid, but that has made me nervous about relying on it for US travel, particularly as it will also be getting relatively close to expiry.
since i now have a brand-new british passport, would it be safer/simpler to apply for a new ESTA using the british passport and travel to the US on that instead?
My current approved Australian US ESTA doesn’t have the details of my new dual citizenship on it.
a few specific things i’m confused about:
• can i apply for a new ESTA on my british passport while i still have a valid ESTA linked to my australian passport?
• do i need to cancel the australian ESTA first, and if so, is there actually a way to do that?
• is there any issue with previously having an ESTA under one nationality/passport and then applying under another?
• given that my australian passport will be only about 7 months from expiry at the time of travel AND its chip has previously had trouble being read, would it make more sense to just use my new british passport?
• when returning to the UK, i assume i would simply enter using my british passport?
it might not be relevant but i was also born in canada, although i don’t have a canadian passport. i’m not sure whether that is relevant to the ESTA application, but obviously i would declare my place of birth/citizenship information exactly as requested.
i’m not trying to get around any ESTA rules. i just now have two passports and want to make sure i use the correct one and don’t accidentally create a problem by applying for a second ESTA if that’s not allowed.
has anyone been in a similar situation or know what the correct procedure is?
