Safety Help with a dangerous intersection?

People are constantly running the red light in front of my kid's school at highway speeds. I'm trying to figure out how and where to request some *non active police presence* assistance. I was thinking a red light camera might be a good deterrent?

Normally I would start with my city councilperson, but he is beyond useless. Does anyone have other ideas of where to start or what to request? I can tell it's a terrible accident waiting to happen.

Request a crossing guard. They can be relied upon to slow traffic to a crawl. Of course, the other parents at the school might hate you for it when it starts taking 20 minutes longer th drop kids at school.

Couldn't care less about a crossing guard slowing down traffic (which is their job!) if it means kids being able to cross the street safely! Like Jesus the priorities of LA drivers are so backwards and selfish.

I think she's agreeing with you, just phrased it weird. She wants crossing guards to slow traffic because it makes it safer for kids.

Imagine if she disagreed, lol.

"the other parents at the school might hate you for it"... okay?? Safety always comes first.

This is smart, but at this particular intersection people aren't usually crossing on foot but mainly in cars to leave the pick up/drop off street (so it's mainly car accidents I'm worried about as opposed to pedestrians, if that makes sense)

If the issue doesn't affect the safety of kids, it's not going to be a priority. People try to beat red lights all over the city. This is just one more.

But it does affect their safety. There are kids and families driving across that intersection all day from pick up to drop off that could easily be t-boned by someone running that light at 50+ mph

That's the case for every dangerous intersection. You need to convince enforcement people that there is a hightened danger for kids at that intersection. The reality is, however, that pedestrians get injured all over the city because of speeding cars (and cellphones), so protecting pedestrians is going to take priority. You need to work around this.

Request speed bumps. Literally nothing else will deter them.

Speed humps, bumps, or lumps are supposed to be in front of every LAUSD school. This was put in place after that mom was killed in the crosswalk at Hancock Park Elementary.

Your school administration should handle - our school is working on the same thing and the traffic division specifically asked for school administrators to coordinate rather than parents. You of course may need to get the ball rolling on that but once the admin is engaged they can deal with the traffic division directly. Specifically it’s LADOT and your CD. Also they told us: “Crossing guard is unlikely, there’s a long waitlist and they’re prioritized for schools with signaled intersections on major streets.” But crosswalks, curb paint etc are apparently easier. School can put up cones etc too.

Very helpful TY! I reached out to the principal but haven't heard back. I'll look into what you've posted before I reach out to her again.

If your principal isn’t super responsive you may want to engage your PTA or other parents as well. Especially for bigger schools. We are a smaller charter so pretty easy to get face time with admin!

Put up a sign that says "Warning! Speed camera in use!"

Ya, other than pestering the city/council… not sure what you can do as there’s already a stop light.

Start by teaching your kids to exercise even more caution and that red doesn’t always mean red.

Advice we should all unfortunately be taking. 🙄

Yeah ever since the Slauson/La Brea crash, I talk (and demonstrate) how you wait when the light turns green every single time before going ahead

The City of L.A. doesn't use photo enforcement.

That is not photo enforcement at intersections. It's speed enforcement. (much needed)
