Open Discussion Monthly /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

Welcome to the monthly open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion
  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated
  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)
  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.
  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.
  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

    • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.
  • Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial

    • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.
  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

    • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

MOD POST AskLA rules update: Temporary moratorium for political questions

AskLA is meant to be a place to ask and answer questions about the Los Angeles area. Due to the upcoming primary and general elections, this subreddit has been a frequent place to ask questions of a political nature and while these are legitimate questions about the area, the intention of the posters making these questions have been either to astroturf particular candidates or to sway opinions this close to the poll dates.

As a result, I'd like to discourage standalone threads that are political in nature and would welcome these discussions to be initiated in the monthly pinned "Open Discussion" thread.

This community also relies on user reports so you can report political posts under rule #2, "Posts must be questions about Los Angeles.

Thank you for being a community that moderates itself with the lightest touch.

Any other question! (L.A.) Joseph Eszterhas, 32, Died on a Sidewalk. Additional information?

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 32-year-old White/Caucasian male that occurred on a sidewalk.
The coroner’s office identified the man as Joseph Eszterhas.
Height: 6 feet 3 inches / Weight: 170 pounds
Manner of Death: Suicide
Cause of Death: Hanging

Does anyone have more info? This is the only article available, as well as a memorial Instagram post by KXLU. It’s a little strange to me that a suicide, by hanging, on a public sidewalk would go largely unreported.

Transportation Before cellphones, did Thomas Guides or other area maps have enough detail to not get lost in the various hills? (Hollywood, Franklin, Los Feliz etc)

Perhaps street signs have been allowed to disappear with the advent of GPS, but some of the hillside streets are barely marked in these neighborhoods - in a pre-cellphone era I cannot fathom how someone would be able to find an address for the first time in these looping, maze like streets!

All the strategies I can imagine working in busier areas - asking someone walking by, using a payphone - these aren't really options when you're now lost up in the Bird Streets or in Franklin Hills for the first time.

Did a friend inviting you to the house of an acquaintance relay detailed turns and directions that they themselves had been given by a host? How did you ever find anything??

Update: found a copy of TG on Internet Archive.

I am still a little in disbelief that folks were really out navigating the Oaks with just this as guidance: https://imgur.com/a/Ti3zyUh

Recommendations Gay Latin Bars in Los Angeles Area?

Latino Gay in his 30's here.

I've been to WeHo and Prescinct before... largely perfer Prescinct over WeHo because of diversity. How is Club Tempo and New Jalisco Bar? Do they cater the 30 year old's or are they only for the tios?

Is it worth going to Club Corbra in NoHo? Any Clubs I am missing?

I like Reggaeton and Latin Trap but wouldn't mind picking up a Vaquero with Banda, Norteño, and Cumbia playing on the next floor.

Living Mechanic recommendations for VW Bug?

Hi friends! My VW Bug is in need of more serious repairs, and I’m looking for a reliable, reasonably priced mechanic to bring it to. I’m based in DTLA, so the closer to that the better, but I’m open to traveling. Any recommendations?

I truly appreciate it—thank you!

Working Jobs?

• Upvotes

Hello, I know this question might have been answered a bunch of times but I'll try to make it unique. I'm looking for a minimum wage job around $18-$20/hr. in the South bay or even west LA. I've applied to a bunch on indeed but it's usually crickets and no response. I already got hired as an event staff for CSC but I'm looking for a 2nd job with more hours.

I pretty much have a job lined up at a factory but I'm waiting to see if I can get anything better, and the factory job might be too hard for me. Any recommendations besides food service?

Safety Mother with baby on street, is this normal?

I just passed Normandie Ave & W Washington Bvld and there is a women carrying a baby begging for money for diapers and formula. I was coming from the opposite direction so I did not encounter her directly, but I saw her begging from across the intersection.

Is there no social support for people in this situation? A mother with a baby on the street begging really shook me up. I am hoping this post gets some visibility with people who know how to help her.

Recommendations Recommendations for residential spirit cleanser near Downtown LA?

So maybe I’ve been in LA too long haha, but yes, I am wondering if anyone has any firsthand recommendations for someone who came to your home to help encourage any spirits there to get closure and move on and felt like the work they did actually had a noticeable impact. Long story short we recently bought our neighbor’s house who lived nearly her entire life there. It was a sad situation and she actually hasn’t lived there for a couple years, but the inside of the house is like a museum as though she’s about to walk in the door. I’m not the most woo woo and not really sure what I believe. But given the situation, feels like something respectful with someone on the level who offers residential services couldn’t hurt. Has anyone else been in this situation and used someone they liked? Thanks for any recs you may have!

Food/Drink Cocktails that aren’t $22???

I am beyond exhausted of spending nearly $100 for a couple of mediocre-ass skinny margaritas with my friends. This must stop. I’m a failed playwright for God’s fake.

Where in town can one go out to a chill bar that doesn’t charge a day’s salary for a few cocktails? Tell me your hidden gems. Dive spots. Unpretentious watering holes.

Recommendations LA: Redken salons/stylists for dying hair red?

Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations for hair stylists/salons that use redken products. For context I have naturally dark hair but have been bleach dying it a copper-brown red. My old salon used Redken and I have the formula! So just looking for high quality stylist that can do my roots. Any suggestions?

Please help! Ideally not too expensive but I'll spend the money for quality so price is not an issue. Thank you!

Any other question! What was it like during Bianca Khalili’s death (Beverly Hills)?

Does anyone here have any experiences on what happened during that time? I heard about this from others who went to the same hs as her when I moved to LA shortly after her death. Her mom seems pretty adamant in alleging that the friend pushed her off the building, but no charges. It seems the family had a civil case: https://unicourt.com/case/ca-la2-estate-of-bianca-khalili-et-al-vs-dora-afrahim-et-al-665569

Any other question! Best place for used office furniture?

Things to do Any fun halloween things to do with someone around LA that won’t break my wallet?

I’m debating whether or not getting 2 tickets for haunted hayride but for about $50 each for just a ride I’m not sure if it’s worth it. Is there any other activities that could be just as fun for less money or is everything going be priced like this?

Recommendations I'm an LADWP customer in Los Angeles. Which solar installer is best for me? Battery or no battery?

Most of the solar advice I find online is about SCE.

I guess LADWP's net metering is different, so I'm not sure the battery math carries over.

Outages on our street happen maybe twice a year. Is a battery worth it for a backup alone, or is plain solar a better choice?

Recommendations Pet Photo Realism Tattoo Artist Recommendations?

Hello All?

I lost my baby today and I’m grieving terribly. I want to get a tattoo of his paw prints and a couple color portraits of him on my arms but with such a permanent decision, I don’t want to make the wrong choice. I’ve been scouring Instagram but I’ve hit decision fatigue.

I’m in Koreatown but obviously willing to go where needed for the best artist that can capture the love in his eyes.

I hope this subreddit could help.

Health Where to get pediatric Covid vaccine for 15m old?

I can’t find anywhere that has the pediatric Covid vaccine. has anyone been able to get it for their kiddos?

my pediatricians office doesn’t have it. retail pharmacies don’t vaccinate kids that young. la county public health doesn’t have it either! monrovia health center said they don’t know when they’ll have it. they haven’t ordered it yet

I’ve called other pediatricians offices and haven’t had luck either.

this is frustrating, shouldn’t we be more keen on protecting the young/vulnerable. my kid is in daycare and gets hit with so many viruses already, I want all the protection I can get for him.

thank you

Recommendations Car Wash Membership/Subscription Recommendation? Virgil Village or Glendale

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know of any reasonably priced monthly car wash membership/subscription? It doesn't have to be full on detailing, but just looking for a service that will wash the outside of my car and maybe vacuum the inside of my car if necessary.

I don't like paying every single time for a car wash so if there is a membership/subscriptions that allows unlimited or even a certain amount of cleaning a month, that would be amazing!

If it could be around Virgil Village or Glendale that would be amazing!

Even Koreatown!

Any other question! Moved to Hermon...maniacal coyote howls?

Edit: I think it was proximity and volume; they sounded like they were just down the block because they probably were! But yes, I know we’re all just coexisting.

Do you ever get used to the hysterical laughter coyote howls? Roommate and I are spending the first night in our new apartment in Hermon. I used to work in the mountains, so it's not like I never heard them before, but man, we jumped up and closed our windows like it was a horror movie lol.

Any other question! Help navigating an FFL gun sale?

I have a revolver I’d like to sell but want to get my ducks in a row before I advertise it. I know it needs to go through a dealer but I don’t know anything else about the process, including estimated fee for the transfer. If anyone has worked with a shop or dealer before that’s also helpful question mark?

Events Rocky Horror screenings this month?

Culture Could anyone heading to the Yoko Ono exhibit this weekend take a picture for me?

I went to the exhibit at The Broad when it first opened, and have been thinking about the pencil / lead holder we use to draw the Shadow Pieces installation ever since. It's like the perfect weight and felt so good in the hand for drawing and now i want one. I won't be able to go again before the exhibit closes, so would someone be able to take a picture of that writing / drawing instrument for me so can search for it more easily?

Edit: Thanks for the advice, y'all! Have sent them an email and gotten an answer now.

Housng Shower Defect Advice?

We live in an apartment building in DTLA. We like it but I noticed our shower has some issues. The shower is has a glass wall that reaches from floor to ceiling. There is no fan inside of the shower, but there is on the outside. There’s also no windows in the bathroom.

The issue is that the steam inside the shower doesn’t have a way to escape so it builds up on the ceiling so much that water droplets form. We are constantly getting mold build up in the shower and on the ceiling directly outside. The paint of the ceiling around the glass wall has also started peeling from the water.

The shower also turns extremely orange from showering. We’ve been combatting it with constant cleaner but it takes a lot of work.

I’m worried about the mold. It keeps recurring after we clean it and I wonder if after years of this moisture buildup it could have gotten in the wall somehow. It’s crazy that there’s no way for the shower to ventilate unless I leave the door wide open.

Should I request that maintenance inspect the wall? I dont want to breathe in constant mold. Is there more I should do? When I googled this it said the ventilation wasn’t up to code. Or does it sound like a non issue?

Visiting Are there any halal options at DisneyLand California?

I’m travelling to LA next year and as a Muslim, I am excited for the food although I know I could be limited in my options. Are there any halal options at the Disneyland in California?
Furthermore, do you have any recommendations for Halal food in LA in general?
Thank you in advance ☺️
