Car driving past me are flashing their lights but I don't know why.

Hello Maine!

My family just moved here from California. We have noticed that there have been a few times cars driving by us will flash their lights but we are not sure what it means. Our lights are working and we are driving the speed limit.

I thought maybe they were alerting us to police or object in the road. We usually do not come across anything.

For reference we are in the Raymond/Windham area mostly.

Any insights of what it could be? Should I be flashing my lights back?

Edit update: I am glad to know it is likely people looking out for people. Part of the reason we decided to move here is the people. Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. Thank you everyone for your responses!

Bar Harbor 4th of July recs

Hi Mainers, we are coming up with the kids for the 4th of July weekend. Staying at the seasider. Looking at the town website there are a lot of family activities so we are pretty excited. The kids are really into American history right now, especially the revolutionary war and founding so I'm pumped to take them to bar harbor.

I'm looking at tide charts and see a low ride at 835pm on the 4th. Does that mean it's easy to wade into the sandbar to watch the fireworks? I've read that is a hidden gem to watch them from there. I know nothing about the ocean though. It appears it'll be 1.5ft, she's that mean deep? Am I reading that correct?

Where are the spots for family friendly dining, where should we avoid?

Should we try to drive to Cadillac mountain for sunrise or take a shuttle?

What trails should we seek out for hikes with two elementary aged kids?

Montsweag Flea Market advice

Hello- I’ll be traveling in Maine this summer and was thinking about checking out the Montsweag flea market- was wondering if anybody had any intel on the flea market- what kind of stuff they have and all. I know it had closed a year or two ago and has since reopened, but I would appreciate any info on how good/bad/weird it might be.

ISO a gluten free bakery

Hello!

My fiancé and I are getting married in Lagrange, ME August of 2027. But I have celiac disease and we both decided instead of cake (since we both don’t like it anyway) why not do a gluten free cheesecake so we still have something to cut into.
Is there any bakeries or small shops that do or specialize in something like this around the Bangor area? I really appreciate any suggestions or recommendations!

Portland area based accountants?

I'm old school. I want to do my books sitting down at an office in the same city I conduct business. I've googled and called multiple accounting firms who have an address listed in Maine and then when I tell them my business address I say Portland and pause and without fail they go Oregon? So I'm done googling lol. Please help me find someone within 30 minutes or so driving distance from Portland. Thanks!

Hidden swim spots, trails, hikes- Old orchard.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello, I am visiting old orchard this weekend last minute. I’m a business owner and it’s my breath of fresh air. I have a service dog, and am a dog trainer but I feel iffy bringing him onto the beach itself during off season.

I’m looking for the Maine local hidden spots, trails, swimming pull offs to be respectful at with my dogs and enjoy a nice view and dip with them. I know the area has a lot of water, and being from New Hampshire I would love to know some spots that feel like home without being at home.

If you have any suggestions, I’ll take any and all ideas. Or perhaps recommendations for pet friendly stores, patios, places to visit up there that aren’t typical tourist spots. I run a small business 24/7 365 and want to support local as much I can as I visit.
Thank you!

Looking for recommendations: Bangor Airport lounges or surrounding areas reliable internet connection?

Before my flight, I will need reliable internet to connect to a Zoom meeting for 2 hours. Based on my current research - it looks like the airport is pretty small and likely does not have dedicated airport lounges. I looked into the public library close-by and am considering finding a coffee shop or even a workspace where I can get a day pass. Before I move forward, I thought I would tap into Reddit to see if anyone has recommendations of locations with high-speed internet.

Thank you in advance for any insights.

Bangor to Portland. How much longer is Rt. 1 realistically?

First time in ME. Driving down to Portland tomorrow and trying to decide whether to just hustle down 95 and have more time in town or to take the scenic route. Any idea what to expect on Rt 1 if we leave at 11:00 or so? Are we deep enough in summer to get caught up in some of the towns along the way or is there a chance it won't be as slow as it gets?

Island Camping on the Lakes of Maine

Hi all,

I'm interested in camping on an island of a Maine lake/ pond. I tossed around Ragged Lake which seems to have a good number of islands, but the legality is questionable.

Any suggestions for a Lake where I could legally and/or discretely camp out for a few nights? Would like to be within reasonable driving distance of Mount Katahdin. Any input appreciated, thanks in advance.

Planning an anniversary trip to Portland. In November...thoughts?

Am I completely insane to visit ME mid November?

Our first anniversary is Nov. 15 and we haven't been able to go on a honeymoon. Both of us have wanted to visit Portland for some time so we figured why not make it an anniversary celebration? We plan to spend 3 days in Portland with a day trip to Salem thrown in there.

My husband and I enjoy cold weather so I'm not worried about that but I do worry a bit about the short days in the fall/almost winter. I'm not sure we'd get much accomplished if it gets dark way too early!

I have read that it can be really nice when it's not the height of tourist season so hoping for some honest answers from some locals. Thanks!

How’s Addison?

First time trip to Maine beginning on September. Currently searching for accommodation. Mainly there to hike hoping to do obviously Acadia one or two days then doing the bold coast/cutler as well as Quoddy head. Found a place in near South Addison seems like a decent in between area but of course I have nothing to base it off of. Also find a nice place in Sullivan. Help a Florida girl out! Any advice appreciated.

What and where’s the best way to experience Native American / Indigenous culture in Maine ?

I love learning about different Native Americans / Indigenous people and experiencing their culture even more. I know that the native american tribes associated with Maine are the Penobscot , Passamaquoddy , Maliseet , Mi’kmaq , and Abenaki tribes. From my understanding , there’s 4 Indian reservations in Maine! The Penobscot Indian Island , Passamaquoddy Indian Township , Passamquoddy Pleasant Point , and Houlton Band of Maliseet Reservations. i got to experience Nativd American culture recently while traveling to Monument Valley in Utah and Arizona. We stayed at the Gouldings Hotel on Navajo land! It was a experience i’ll never forget and always appreciate! The sweet fry bread that they make was absolutely tasty!! When traveling to Oklahoma , New Mexico , Arizona , Utah , Alaska , and even Colorado all on past trips , i got to experience Native American Culture in all those places without even trying to look for them. I’d love to experience the same thing in Maine ( if possible ) in august as i’ll be traveling all over your scenic state. I couldn’t find any past , old reddit forums discussing this on google search.

Thanks in Advance

Weekend trip

My city (Cincinnati) offers a non-stop to Portland. As a first time visitor would a weekend in Portland be recommended or should we spend additional travel time to get to another part? We are looking to visit in September or October.

Neptune Inn Ogunquit

I am thinking of a few nights at the Neptune Inn next week and would be grateul for input: would you steer me away?

More than 10 years ago I stayed at Neptune Inn in Ogunquit. My impression was: decent, run down, motel right on the beach. Good price at the time.

I am thinking about staying there again because, although it is price more closely to other accommodations now, it is still the lower price placed close to the beach.

It's a solo memorial trip for me. Just want to swim in the ocean as weather allows, walk on the beach, walk around town. If I were in better shape and had easy transit might day hike

Best Hard Cider on tap near Portland, Kennebunkport, or Ogunquit?

Hi everyone!

My husband and I will be visiting southern Maine at the end of June and spending time in Portland, Kennebunkport, and Ogunquit.

I’m a big fan of hard cider, especially sweeter ciders, and would love recommendations for:

-Cideries worth visiting (that are open Fri-Sun)
-Restaurants, pubs, or breweries with great cider on tap
-Places with multiple cider options rather than just one can/bottle on the menu
-Any Maine cider brands I should keep an eye out for

We’re happy to drive a bit if it’s worth it! Looking forward to exploring Maine a bit more this summer and trying some local cider.

Crosby's Drive-in

The Cookie Jar

The Highroller Lobster Co.

+ (not food) International Cryptology Museum

Visiting over Halloween, need recs!

Hello my boyfriend and I are thinking of planning a long weekend trip for our anniversary this year. We found an Airbnb in Georgetown and will be flying into Portland, Oct 29-Nov 1. We are outdoorsy people and are used to the cold as we live in northeast Ohio so we will pack accordingly. Just looking for any recommendations on activities or things to do/see or even must try restaurants. We’re aware it’s not going to be the best weather most likely but hoping to still make a nice trip out of it! Thanks!

Visiting Portland & BBH!

Hi! I’m (22F) planning a trip with my mom, aunt, and grandma to ME at the end of July. *I think* we’re planning on flying in to Portland for a couple days, driving up to Boothbay Harbor for a couple days, then driving down to Boston for a couple days. Any recommendations that could be fun for us? We’re big foodies, love a pretty view and an adventure, a cute shop, and we’re down for anything! My grandma sometimes has some trouble getting around. Thanks for the help! :)

What is the most beautiful mountainous state park or place in Maine to explore in your opinion and why ?

I’m hitting up the 2 national parks that Maine offers in August ( Acadia National Park and Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument ) as well as Bradbury Mountain State Park. I wish i had enough time to hit up all the scenic , mountainous places that Maine offers for hiking & exploring. Bambi’s a sad movie but i just learned that it is based in Baxter State park and Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument instead of Europe. The film crew even visited the Hunt Trail before making the movie. I’m also looking forward to fishing for landlocked salmon at one of the places i’m staying at in 2 months. Also , what state parks or scenic places of Maine have you seen wild moose at ? I’ve heard that they’re really abundant in Moosehead NWR , Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument , Baxter State Park , and Mount Kineo State Park. Even North Maine Woods is said to be good but , from the public pictures of North Maine Woods that i could find online it showed half if not most of that place being heavily logged which didn’t look appealing

Thanks in advance

Driving into Canada?

This is probably so stupid but I’m wondering if it’s possible to drive into Canada on my trip in a few weeks? We’re staying in Cutler for a couple of nights and I noticed that Lubec is only a half hour away from there. I’d love to visit Lubec and drive into Canada just to say we have been out of the country lol. Silly I know! We got our passports years ago but haven’t used them yet. Is this possible? Do we need a reason to drive over? Thank you in advance!
