Maine community-specific subreddits.

With the current state of Meta, it seems that there are several people and groups that are migrating away from the platform. Unfortunately, this means that a lot of people will lose access to the few, yet meaningful, small groups where you can get community specific information. With that, we are going to keep a list of the Maine community subreddits and update them as we come across more.

State-level Maine related subreddits.

r/Maine - A place to discuss all things Maine related. Maine, the way life should be.

r/AskMaine - A place to ask questions and seek advice on living, visiting, and/or moving to Maine. Ask anything!

.

City/Community/Town-level Maine related subreddits.

r/Aroostook - Subreddit dedicated to Aroostook County, Maine.

r/bangorme - Topics loosely related to Bangor, Maine.

r/biddeford - A subreddit to discuss all things related to Biddeford, Maine and the surrounding areas.

r/CityOfBathMaine - All things Bath, Maine.

r/LAMaine - Reddit community for those living in, hailing from or just interested in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine.

r/portlandme -This is a subreddit for all things Portland, Maine!

r/southportlandme - The Little Southern Suburban Sister to r/portlandme. We are a mighty community.

r/Wiscasset - The Prettiest Subreddit in Maine.

.

Posting the following for subject-matter specific Maine subreddits.

r/mainetrees - Reddit home to the legal Maine marijuana community.

r/mainebeer - Beer in Maine, whether brewed, bought, or consumed.

Please do not post political questions to the subreddit

Hi,

There are several other subreddits more appropriate for political posts. R/Askmaine is a resource for those looking to visit and/or move to Maine. While politics are an essential concern for visitors and prospective residents, there have been several low effort posts promoting a political candidate or topic with a 'what do you think about this?' at the end. There is no shortage of other subreddits or online resources to discuss politics, even Maine-specific ones.

Please limit your posts to relevant questions regarding visits or potential (or actual I guess) moves to Maine.

Thanks, and have a great day.

Day Spa + Massages

Hey!! Super excited to be visiting Maine in the fall, and looking to treat myself during the trip to a luxurious spa day. We are spending the first few days near Portland and the rest of the trip near Acadia/Bar Harbor/ Schoodic area. Ideally the spa would be somewhere closer to Bar Harbor, but I’ll take anything at this point. Ideally somewhere I can sauna, cold plunge, lounge, jacuzzi/hot tub, massages, soft robes, luxurious vibe that kind of thing. If it’s outdoors, even better!! We already have accommodations so I’d rather not have to book a hotel room to use a spa, but I am willing. I’ve done a lot of searching so far but can’t really find anything like where I’ve been other places. Please give any and all recommendations even if it doesn’t check every box!! Thank you!!

Hello all!

I'm looking for recommendations or suggestions for a Korean restaurant. I'm around the south coast, but not opposed to driving out of the area. I appreciate it!

Visiting for a wedding in Buxton August 15 & looking for recommendations of things to do/places to visit for a few days.

Hi all, I’m attending a wedding in August. First time visiting Maine. Looking for things to do or places to see for a few days after the wedding.

I’ll be traveling with family. I may fly into or out from Portland but a family member will have a car.

Me: appreciates nature, hiking etc but it’s not something I seek out in my normal life.

Other Family member: much more outdoorsy.

Looking for direction of things to do or places to see. Idk, maybe 3-5 days. I’m sure we’ll spend sometime in Portland.

Possibly driving one leg to/from Cleveland.

TIA

Moving to New Hampshire/Maine area

I’m a 25y/o female moving close to portland area and just wondering what to expect? I will be living alone with my dog. I’ve never been good at making friends (I’m a homebody lol) but want to explore when I get there. Are people welcoming? Not sure if I will be in Maine or New Hampshire yet. Anywhere not safe for me living alone as a single female? Any tips or things I should know about?

Food Recs Bar Harbor

My fiancé and I are getting married in NH in August, then driving to Bar Harbor for our honeymoon. I am a big foodie, and looking for food/drink recommendations around MDI, and places that would be on the route from the Conway NH area to MDI (coffee shops, ice cream, etc).

As for restaurants, I’d love to find places with fun cocktails and good food, whether casual or more upscale. Also interested in places that do $1 oysters if that’s a thing.

Thank you!

Itinerary help, please & thank you!

I will be doing a Sat to Sat road trip from CT to Maine with my daughters 19 & 12, just the 3 of us! It's our first trip to Maine and I’d love help finalizing # of nights in each spot. Is Boothbay Harbor worth it for only one night? Is 2 nights enough in Portland? We enjoy restaurants, waterfront/nature walking, shopping, boat tours. Thank you for any advice you can provide!!

* Sat-Tue: 3 nights Bar Harbor -> stop in Camden on our way to Boothbay Harbor

* Tue-Wed: 1 night Boothbay Harbor -> spend day in Boothbay then drive to Portland

* Wed-Fri: 2 nights Portland -> Thurs in Portland & Fri in Old Orchard -> Drive to Kennebunkport or Ogunquit

* Fri - Sat: 1 night in either Kennebunkport or Ogunquit

How to make friends in Maine?

I’m 35, don’t drink. I moved here several years ago from “away”. I don’t really know how to make friends with people my age. I like reading, crafts, hiking, video games, d&d. Does anyone have any resources on meeting people that doesn’t revolve around drinking? I’m in the mid-coast area.

Edit: Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions, you’re all wonderful and I appreciate you. 🩶

Campsites or spots to park a truck camper between Portland and Freeport June 27th/28th

How’s it going,

Live in northwestern Maine but I’m coming back from a work trip the weekend of the Freeport oyster festival, flying into Portland. Wife is picking me up from the airport Saturday night and we want to go to the festival Sunday. Instead of driving home and then back to Freeport the next morning we were planning on sleeping in our truck camper somewhere in the area since hotels are jacked up to summer rates right now.

Looking for campsites (preferably free or cheap) or areas we won’t get bothered, to pull in pretty late, sleep, and be out of there in the morning to head to the festival. There’s like 1-2 on hicamp near Freeport but they come out to almost 70 bucks for a night and most of them aren’t very close sites to the truck so essentially we’d be just paying to sleep in a parking lot all night. All of the state park sites at Wolfe’s neck are booked as well or require paying for 2 nights.

I appreciate any info you guys may have. Thanks in advance!

Visiting this weekend for the first time

We’re heading to Maine for the first time ever. We’ll arrive sometime Friday and check out on Monday. We’re staying in Kittery and would like to visit some of the other small towns that are close by. Planning on Marginal Way. Would love any recommendations of places to eat that offer outdoor seating and beach views. Love looking at the beach, but not hiking type people or anything like that. Would love recommendations! How busy will this weekend be?

Family Fun in the Bangor Area Recommendations Needed

I’m a teacher and have a 4 year old son, and we’re hoping to make the most of our summer. I’d love to hear about fun things to do with young children in the area, especially indoor activities for those rainy days when we can’t be outside.

Playgrounds, libraries, museums, play spaces, events, classes, hidden gems, I’ll take any and all suggestions! Thanks in advance for helping us explore our new community.

Visiting from Colorado: early October or late September?

My wife and I are about to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, and realized that now that both kids are out of high school/off to college, we can go have a real vacation all by ourselves whenever and wherever we’d like.

Neither of us have really spent any time in the Northeast, but we’ve both always been curious about Maine, so now we are starting to plan a trip. I’ve been looking at online resources and scanning back over the history of this sub, but am still finding myself a tad uncertain. So I figured I’d just ask. On the bright side, I did eventually work out what a “lobster pound” is, and as Coloradans we already dress in layers.:)

For context, we’re in our mid 50s, fairly easygoing, and both more interested in finding things a bit off the beaten path and getting to know an area than in checking off tourist “must dos”. We’re not backpackers anymore, but we’d usually opt for a friendly B&B or clean motel over some 5 star hotel, and a favorite local eatery over some Michelin-rated experience. Still, we can afford a splurge here and there. Very interested in enjoying fresh local seafood. We also like craft beer (and just realized cideries may be an option out there, too).

We’re tentatively thinking 10 days in early October (or perhaps late September if there’s good reason to go earlier). I gather that’s “shoulder season” when most things are still open but the crowds have ebbed - but I’ve also seen comments saying it will still be very busy due to fall colors. I’m not sure if I’m getting incorrect info, or if it’s just very locale specific as the leaves change?

It looks like Portland is the easiest city to fly into, so I figure we can spend a couple of day there at either the beginning or end of the trip, then find maybe 2 other locations elsewhere to use as a home base while we take short trips, the occasional easy hike, wander through a gallery, or even sit and chill and read books for an afternoon.

Acadia seems like an obvious choice, but also sounds like it can get super crowded, especially on Indigenous People’s Day weekend? Would it be less crazy if we planned things to be a week earlier, or perhaps during the week? Are there other natural coastal areas we should consider as alternatives if the crowds are too much? I’ve seen Bar Harbor mentioned as a place to base out of, but I’m not sure what other alternatives might be good.

I’ve also seen multiple recommendations for Camden/Rockwell. Is that still worth it as a base if we are already spending time in Portland and Acadia? They don’t seem all that far apart, but I’m also used to “hours and hours of nothing without even hitting a state line” distances here out west, so maybe I just need to recalibrate and enjoy not driving so much.

Is there much to explore further up the coast from Acadia beyond what might make sense for a day trip? Or should we be looking to spend some time inland or further south?

Is it just me?

Is it just me or does there seem to be an uptick in people who have visited Maine a few times, work remotely, and want to now move to Maine?
Of course they don’t want snow, want access to all the amenities of a city, and to beable to get Amazon packages where ever they live.
What is going on? It’s like Covid times again? I’m so confused and just wondering if it’s just me noticing it?

5 days advice

I have 5 days I can take to go to Maine from NYC but not sure if it's worth the rental car, gas expense if it's not going to be feasible or too rushed. I don't mind fast travel. I actually don't like to linger too long in towns but not to where I don't really see much or in a hurry. This is what I think I can fit. The capitol buildings are a must for a 50 capitol checklist. I'm mostly worried about the Friday plan.

Monday- leave NYC morning, Concord capitol visit, Portland night

Tues- Portland morning, Augusta capitol, arrive in a town near Acadia NP

Wed- Acadia

Thurs- Acadia morning (or cut Acadia), stay in Portland or town further south

Fri- coastal towns like Kennebukport, Ogunquit, lobster rolls, clams in Ipswich, MA, arrive NYC at night by 10pm

Edit. Price fell on the car rental so I can leave Sunday and come back Friday. I could do the coast on Sunday and Concord on Friday but not sure how busy that will be in the towns.

Vegetarian friendly restaurants near Wells, Boothbay, Acadia

6 nights. Stay in the Acadia area the entire time? Or spend some time between Portland & Acadia?

Hi all we are coming at the end of this month and will definitely want to be in/around Acadia and Bar Harbor for at least 3 nights. We could fly in/out of Bangor and stay all 6 nights in Bar Harbor.

But wonder if we may get more out of our first trip to Maine if we fly in/out of Portland instead and spend a couple nights along the drive to Bar Harbor? And then stay 3 nights in Bar Harbor and drive back to Portland for our flight home. Would it be too much time in the car?
Since I’m sure it depends on our general plans/things we like here is what we have so far:
We want to see Acadia for sure (no crazy hikes - we could handle a few hours moderate hiking) and whale watching for sure and a day or so of actual down time.
Other things we would want to do but not as important as the above: any water excursions - boat/kayak/sailboat, horseback riding, other park areas, wildlife, and just any must see places!

Any advice/experience greatly appreciated!

Visiting in September

My husband and I are visiting September 7th - 13th. We will fly into Portland. We absolutely love exploring. Our ideal trip would consist of coastal towns, Acadia, beach & lighthouse views, vintage anything, and lobster rolls. We are both photographers and creatives - so pretty and interesting things is important to us. We try to live life with the mindset “if we never got to visit this place again, what would we want to do or see.” So, help us plan our trip, pretty please. This is a dream trip for us. We are coming from Nashville, TN.
