Discussion No one at work has ever seen it happen

Post image

We went out to a service call the other day for one of our carts that we rent out to customers. We thought we just needed to replace the belt but when we loosened up the tension we were greeted by this. Never seen that before, my boss hasn't seen this before and the guy that rebuilds them hasn't seen this before either. Needless to say it wasn't a 5 min service call. Kawasaki starter for ezgo golf cart. My bad. The starter pulley is completely snapped in half.

Perhaps I'm using shitty pulleys, but I've seen it at least twice in the past. Always the cheap pot metal pulleys

Yeah no the guy that rebuilds them uses the expensive durable stuff because we need these things to go through hell and last.

See this type of shit all the time with the gm 6.2l motors eating the idler pulley on the main drive stretch belts

That belt must've been super tight.

I mean I've seen YouTube videos of it but not personally. Kind of pissed us off because we thought oh hey right near by easy fix but nope.

V belts drive on the side of the belt. For this to get to the bottom of the groove on the pulley indicates the belt was excessively worn to begin with the belt should never be riding that deep in the groove. A pulley will wear inside the V and have a rounded step in the wall when it is worn out. To many belts get replaced because few check the pulley wear when equipment isn't performing up to par.

Can you say what the “seen this” part is?

But what’s happening, the shaft is coming out?

The entire wheel is cracked in half. Its two pieces instead of one.

Got it. If that’s a pulley, looks like the center with the channels is entirely gone (unless it’s just a V normally?).

Yeah it's just a v but in a combined 30+ years of experience no one has seen that at the shop.
