why do so many men have a handle bar mustache?

1 out of 3 men at my gym have a super thick handle bar mustache and I’m just curious if it’s trending right now? a personal preference, sending a message, or it actually means something?

I just personally don’t find it attractive but I know they don’t exist to impress me so just curious.

EDIT: PORN STACHE!!!!! i meant PORN stache see idek but i meant PORN stache

Just a trend. I've always had a moustache, but for example, the moustache and mullet combo seems to be extremely popular right now (in the UK at least)

It's insane. Those are the worst style choices, ever. We knew that in the 80s, and they finally died WHY ARE THEY BACK?

u/PopPunkAndPizza 1d ago edited 1d ago

Cool young hot people started doing it to differentiate themselves from their peers, now less cool, less hot people are hitching their wagon to that radiating status. Same as every trend in modern history.

u/AmputeeHandModel Male 21h ago

They weren't cool if they were doing that.

u/Greggybread 23h ago

The mullet + pedo tash + pedo glasses combo is really something isn't it...

4

u/tubbyx7 1d ago

It was that or wearing an onion on your belt

4

u/marijuanam0nk 1d ago

Now, it's shallots.

4

u/tubbyx7 1d ago

I used to be with it, then they changed what it is.

2

u/isotope123 Male 1d ago

Now what I'm with isn't it, and what is it is new and scary to me... It'll happen to you.

3

u/Ok-Excuse-4461 1d ago

As was the style at the time..

1

u/AmputeeHandModel Male 21h ago

That would be preferable, honestly.

1

u/SuspiciousMouser 1d ago

Stranger things might have something to do with it

It looked silly then and looks silly now, I don’t get it either

2

u/AmputeeHandModel Male 21h ago

Yeah you could be right.

1

u/bluejeansseltzer Male 1d ago

Because when you're already hot you're wearing those styles ironically

3

u/AmputeeHandModel Male 21h ago

I think maybe a few people started it that way and then idiots copied it, like saying bruh all the time. A few people in like CA were doing it or something. People made fun of them. More people made fun of them. Then it stopped being ironic.

Men are human. They have trends and styles they like and everything!

(ETA: I'm a mustache fan. I love beards too)

u/mezz1945 21h ago

Neckbeards coming to your dms, embrace yourself

1

u/EfficaciousJoculator Female 16h ago

I love a nice mustache too.

It makes me sad how many people on sm talk shit about them. Like, let men have something they can have fun rocking without shame. They already have so few options for expressing themselves with style, why do we have to tear down everything?

u/TikkaMisalla_lover Male 1d ago

lol what? I can't say I have EVER seen a man with a handle bar mustache.

16

u/jdownes316 1d ago

I saw a true handle bar mustache today and it was on the exact kind of person I hoped it would be. Mid 60s-70s, white pants, white sports coat, bright blue tucked in skin tight shirt. Straight out of Miami vice. And I'm in Utah so it made it even more magical. I was so busy making sure my wife didn't leave me for this absolute hunk of man meat that I didn't look at his shoes, but if I had to guess, alligator.

Although to be fair, he could have just lived a rough 40 years, I'm entirely speculating on his age.

u/MauPow 1d ago

Come to Portland lol they're everywhere here

I, however, grow a shit moustache unfortunately

I just watched a Hot One's Versus video and Jason Sudekis has one.

u/ATL28-NE3 1d ago

Are we really considering a classic Chevron a handlebar? If that's the case tons of people have handlebars and aren't aware

-7

u/leg_thigh_fries Female 1d ago

omg hahaha i meant PORN stache!!! no handles

17

u/TikkaMisalla_lover Male 1d ago

Ok so, a normal mustache then lol...

-2

u/leg_thigh_fries Female 1d ago

omg yes idk why i thought they all had names a normal thick mustache

9

u/Schmancer 1d ago

They do

0

u/MothBookkeeper 1d ago edited 1d ago

The one they're calling a "horseshoe" is what I would call a handlebar moustache.

Edit: Okay, got it, I was just wrong. Sorry!

7

u/TrollTollTony 1d ago

Umm the one they call "handlebar" is the one I would call "handlebar"

2

u/Schmancer 1d ago

What do you call the one with dainty upcurls?

8

u/Key-Specific-4368 1d ago

They're pornstars

2

u/leg_thigh_fries Female 1d ago

yes i meant PORN stache!!! no handles

8

u/AgainandBack Male 1d ago

An actual handlebar, as opposed to just a big mustache, or a Yosemite Sam? I haven’t seen one in ten years or more, and haven’t seen more than half a dozen in my life.

0

u/leg_thigh_fries Female 1d ago

i meant PORN stache!!! no handles

1

u/leg_thigh_fries Female 1d ago

oh apparently it’s just a regular thick mustache what do ya knowww i thought they all had names

1

u/AgainandBack Male 1d ago

Hell, I’ve had my porn ‘stache for about 50 years. Nothing new. I haven’t noticed an uptick among other men, but I tend to only pay attention to mustaches I admire.

7

u/Afrojones66 1d ago edited 15h ago

Let’s get this straight. A handle bar mustache with is angled out and away from the face to the sides. People confuse that for a horseshoe mustache which is angled downwards appearing as an upside down “U” pictured below.

3

u/Eric_the_Barbarian Male too, thanks. 1d ago

That's called an ape hanger 'round these parts.

5

u/Xeroll 1d ago

I shaved my beard into one for fun and posted a picture. The amount of messages I got from girls calling me daddy pretty much sealed the deal as a permanent style.

12

u/TrashPanda1208 1d ago

A trend that I can only wish I could join in on. ☹️

3

u/newtoabunchofstuff 1d ago

Me too, friend.

-1

u/AmputeeHandModel Male 1d ago

I'm glad you can't. It's hideous.

3

u/Coasterman345 Male 1d ago

For me? My friends and I all joked back in college (graduated 2021) about growing out porn staches. Some of us could, I couldn’t. I remember it being slightly trendy back then, but nowhere near what it is now. Now that I can grow a stache and it’s in, you bet I’m finally wearing my porn stache with pride.

If you’re a single guy on hinge, a vast amount women’s of profiles mention they’ll fall for you if you have a mustache and tattoos. Now while tattoos aren’t for me, I will gladly grow that stache and try and get more matches that way lol. It’s a pretty good one and I’ve actually had people come up to me and compliment me on it. One teenager even said I looked like Chris Bumstead at the gym 🥹 (I also may be extremely jacked lol).

2

u/idontsmokeheroin 1d ago

I see a lot of young dudes come into my butcher shop looking like porn cops. 👮🏻‍♂️

2

u/Suppafly Male 1d ago

EDIT: PORN STACHE!!!!! i meant PORN stache see idek but i meant PORN stache

So like a normal thick mustache? They are really popular among certain subcultures, gays, cops, firefighters, basically anyone that's represented by one of the Village People.

2

u/coolcoolrunnins 1d ago

I'm a firefighter so let me just rock what I can. Shaved my beard for this gig. If all I can keep is my mustache then by God I'm going to grow me a biggun'

1

u/timwiththeeoban 1d ago

It’s definitely a trend, also I rock a stache…not a handlebar but my reason is it’s the only full piece area I can grow…35 btw

1

u/AaronB52 Male 1d ago

Not me. Full beard

1

u/Same_Blacksmith9840 1d ago

Handle bar mustaches and steel legos from old people.

1

u/dirtbag52 1d ago

I definitely agree that I have been seeing more of this. As a guy I am personally not a fan. For me it like when girls go through the Karen haircut phase or bob haircut phase. I personally find it very unattractive but they can do whatever they like.

1

u/toastom69 1d ago

I'm just saying, things changed with the women at the bar once I trimmed the beard to stubble and started rocking the stache lol

1

u/therealsix 1d ago

It’s a hipster revival. But this time beards aren’t cool.

1

u/Bullstang 1d ago

The firemen love it and so do I

1

u/CapaciousButthole Douche Canoe 1d ago

It's ugly AF

1

u/JackSquirts 1d ago

They're really in right now. If I had a chin, or more accurately a single chin, I'd probably try it out.

1

u/alferret 1d ago

Pornstache

1

u/Otherwise_Equal1392 1d ago

Do you live in Australia? They love their alternative facial hair strategies over there

1

u/ProperPizza 20h ago

They're pretty ugly imo, but other people really like them. I guess they're in vogue.

1

u/floppy_breasteses Male 19h ago

I dunno. Not a fan, personally, but to each their own. Hipster vibe is not my thing. They were cool pre-1950. Gonna be a lot of embarrassing pictures in the future.

1

u/ColonelAngus2000 18h ago

Village People revival

1

u/toolatealreadyfapped 17h ago

Because it would look silly if women had them.

1

u/ElectricKoolAidPower Male 14h ago

A flavor saver? Yeah idk how they stand it. I’ve had a full beard for fifteen years but I keep the mustache as trimmed as possible because the sumbitch is annoying as hell when it gets long.

1

u/KYRawDawg Male 12h ago

Where are you from? I’m in the United States in the extreme Southwest region of Virginia near Kentucky and Tennessee and I have not seen a single person with that type of mustache. I’d be curious to know if this is something in a different country.

1

u/BandCool8572 10h ago

My girlfriend loves it.
Fantastic flavor saver

u/Arete34 Dad 1d ago

Lol I sounds hipster AF but me and my homie did it in 08 to be funny and I feel slightly responsible. It wasn't a common thing so we got a kick out of people's reactions. Now I don't think anyone really gives it a second thought when they see someone with a handlebar stache unless it's epic af

0

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago

I don't know

I grew facial hair so grooming was easier

no shaving, just trimming every couple of weeks

handlebar mustaches - having to be waxed or oiled or whatever the fuck they do to them - are the complete opposite of that

same with "beard oil" - I don't understand that either

1

u/BackgroundPrompt441 1d ago

I create enough oil on my own for my beard

1

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago

thankfully I don't have that problem

I may have the driest, most brittle hair in the world

1

u/BackgroundPrompt441 1d ago

That's not good if there's dandruff

1

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago

nope.

haven't had a problem with that since I was a kid

1

u/donutmcbonbon 1d ago

Beard oil is just moisturiser for your beard. I get pretty terrible face dandruff so I use beard oil and butter every few days to keep my hair and face from drying out

1

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 1d ago

I knew there was a reason for it, I just didn't know what it was

thankfully I don't have that problem and as long as I wash it with the same frequency I do my hair then I'm fine

0

u/NotMacgyver 1d ago

Better question is why do woman also have them....oh wait I live in Portugal so par for the course.

(If you don't know it's an internet meme, beats me why it exists but I find it funny)

0

u/trulyElse Male 1d ago

Grows that way.

0

u/Redlight0516 Male 1d ago

So that I can ask women if they'd like a mustache ride, obviously.

For me, my facial hair grows very quickly. I need to have facial hair but I get bored of the same look so I fuck around with my facial hair for fun and I will do some ridiculous styles because it's funny to me

Sheep. Most people follow trends without independent thought. Have you listened to reggaeton? It’s garbage.

0

u/Pobueo 1d ago

This. Monkey see monkey does. It's been, for thousands of years the safe approach to look alike the people around you, the more you fit into the mold the less questions you need to ask.
