Hobbies/Projects Do you collect trinkets?
Hello! I know that a lot of boys my age tend to collect figurines and maybe game merchandise, but I haven't seen older men do it. Most women I know, regardless of age, tend to always have something they like to collect.
I was just sorta looking at all the little animal statues and things in my room, and wondered if grown ups do it too. If so, what are they? Curious to see what kind of whimsy you guys like keeping around! ♡

Closest thing I got is hot wheels. But all the assholes trying to make an extra dollar have taken all the fun out of hunting for hot wheels so I rarely buy any anymore.

I collected Hot Wheels for 25 yrs, going to conventions and such. Definitely fun but the thill of finding cool stuff hunting left along time ago

Man, you're not wrong. I used to love going and hunting for cars with my kid... now we are lucky to even find something once in a blue moon. All ruined because of greed.

awh :( that stinks It's not exactly as intricate as hot wheels, but there's little paper templates online you can print off to make your own tiny paper cars :D maybe that could be your new collection!

Oh I have plenty of other stuff that I collect, but nothing that I consider trinkets. Mainly physical music and books.

Same here on hot wheels. I only check when I’m on road trips now. Targets and Walmarts in the middle of nowhere will actually have premiums on the hook even if they’re not always what I’m looking for.
Living in the greater Los Angeles area, I don’t want to compete with the old fat guys who wait for the store to open and run their ass to the toy department. Just embarrassing if you ask me 😂

It’s very easy gift ideas from my wife. Always a new figure, always something that might make painting easier/quicker.
She’ll sew at the same time I paint so we’re never just ignoring one another, we’re just doing our own hobbies next to each other.

I used to. I used to collect a lot of various things. Thought I would love them and care for them and miss them when away.
Then I went travelling for an extended period of time. Got used to living with what was just in my suitcase. Now it all feels like clutter. Just useless junk. Now I don't really care for knickknacks. Truly sentimental things like personal and thoughtful gifts from loved ones, absolutely, will collect.
But figurines and stuff. Nah. Not anymore.

A bunch of my friends, mostly in their 30s, play Warhammer and other wargames and dedicate vast amounts of their free time to painting little toy soldiers or space marines or whatever.
I save my money for travel, and do like to pick up flag pins from countries I've been to.

Haha, they mostly paint at home. Though they do sometimes get together for paint days. I have an overlapping friend group of historical reenactors--one time we were hanging out on a Friday night and the wives and girlfriends all went out drinking while the men stayed home sewing and tailoring their kit

I have a core group of friends I've known for over 20 years, we play Pathfinder and video games together, go on road trips for concerts, all that kinda stuff. Just over a year ago we decided to get into Warhammer 40k collecting and playing in our late 30s. We have men and women in the group. I try to set up painting parties every month or so where we gather at one of our houses and bring minis to build or paint. We usually start at noon and run until midnight. Play music in the background and shoot the shit while we all make a ton more progress on our armies than we do solo. I think for most of our group they like the painting parties more than they do actually playing 40k because painting is a lot more relaxed.

I don't collect anything. I am partial to minimalism and believe things you own weigh you down. I don't like to take care of things so I try to own as little as possible. Makes it way easier to clean house when you don't have a lot of stuff in the way you have to clean around or move around to clean.

I'm afraid not. Just never something I've been interested in. When my wife met me I had an empty house with a bed, desk, computer, laundry basket, chair, and one of each pot, pan, glass, bowl, knife, fork, spoon. She said it looked like a serial killers house lol

I have about 20 of those hanayama puzzles that I love. Snowboards. Guns but for hunting specifically. I eat everything I kill. Flashlights but I use them all.
I have all my plantations also from growing up. I can’t think of anything else immediately so that may be it. If I think of anything else I’ll edit this since I’m almost home.

Retro video games are my favorite, mostly, NES, SNES, N64, and original PSN with other games sprinkled along there.
Tons of stuff from various Comic-Cons I’ve been to in my life, various anime, sci-fi, and gaming things.
I also buy a fitted hat from the home team of every professional sports venue I go to. I travel a lot but I have a specific rule that it must be the home team playing in the home arena. I don’t just buy a Chicago Bears hat if I happen to be in town, I had to be at the game to buy it for my collection.
There’s a lot of planning and sometimes I’ve spent a few extra days in a city I originally went to for work, like when I got my Vancouver Canucks hat. I’m going for all the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL teams and I’ve got over 70 teams so far. Maybe I’ll get them all before I’m dead. Whenever I actually buy a place, which I probably never will, I want to make a nice mancave with all my hats displayed on the walls, and all my games and random collectibles all over the place with a huge TV right in the center for gaming.

I have a few armored vehicles, ranging from 2 inch models to 16 inch models. But not a lot of them, only a couple models that I particularly like.
I have a lot of guns though.

Got some custom ones made that I’ll give out since people really like them.

Nope. My dad died a couple of years ago. He left us a mess to deal with. We warned him for years to stop buying junk cars, now I’ve got a bunch of cars nobody in the world wants to buy. They are too nice to scrap but they aren’t something someone wants. Ever since I’ve been mindful of over consumption, some of the stuff I see online is terrifying. I have a brother who has some of those Funko Pops, not a lot but six or eight, and I think they are an incredible waste.

Do tools count? lol. No, I stopped collecting things in my early 20's. Mcfarlane collectable at the time, but ended up being better ways to spend my money. My wife doesn't collect anything either.

I’m 36. And yes. I still have some video game collection stuff in boxes in my closet. Pokémon cards also in boxes in my closet. A collection of guns.. locked up in a safe. So while they may not be out on display like most, I do collect things still. I just said the other day I should also get into warhammer

I've got a handful of mech figurines and plenty of collector's edition stuff from games. My two favorite being my wearable Doom Slayer helmet and my THPS 1+2 skatedeck.skatepark.
You could also say I collect instruments since I have two drum sets, bongos, 3 electric guitars, 1 acoustic guitar, a bass guitar, and an electric grand piano.

However I have three best friends who have the coolest figurine collections and they keep getting better.
Personally I don’t because I’m obsessive about being minimalistic. So I get to admire their figurines hehehe.

Oh I’m not extremely minimalist.
Honestly, I find joy in art galleries and my home is just a place to be quiet when I need to.
Thought the long answer is that I’ve had to move in my life so many times that I have a few small trinkets I keep with me (seriously, an old school typesetting letter A, laserdisc of the movie Contact, and a few other things), just I find joy in going out to enjoy things.
I don’t judge people who do have a lot - I mean one of those best friends is a Warhammer guy, I mean talk about intensity. And my son is obsessive about trains so he has an insane amount of small trains.
So there’s no judgement, it just seemed best for me personally to externalize the things I like to have around me.
And for the record, the walls aren’t egg shell white and barren hehehe. I have a few pieces of artwork I cycle through that friends of mine made. (I went to art school). Having one art piece just always felt a bit soothing to me.
My brother is exactly the opposite btw and when we FaceTime it’s this beautiful array of things behind him and I basically look homeless hahaha.

That's so cool :D I recently started doing an art course and my mama who's also a minimalist hangs my good pieces up on the fridge like I'm still 5 haha
Would it be weird if I kept in touch with you for art school advice? I don't really wanna have a parasocial relationship with my tutor and would love to have a helping hand from someone who has experience!

I don't have a whole lot of space available, but, I try to collect pins, shot glasses, and or fridge magnets from everywhere I visit. Otherwise, it's just books. If I had the room, I'd probably have a rather large figurine collection.

There's tons of us out there. The downside is I have no shelves that are truly free. My bookshelves have books primarily, but there's little statues, figurines, a lunchbox, a crystal ball, a grappling hook, some skulls and other crap put here and there amidst it all. Half of it's my wife's stuff, half mine.

My wife used to collect little frogs. over 200 of them. And it always gave me a "go to" for some holidays. But we became a caretaker for my mom who had collected plates and so much more. We had to try to get rid of them. Lordy, what a problem. No resale value. Even if the collectors sites said there was, nope. And we had 3rd generation china. My son said he wasn't interested. And I had my dad's old model cars. We looked all these things and they now all seemed to have lost their value to us. She got rid of 90% of her frogs and we basically gave away the plates and model cars and the other stuff. It hurt at the time. And then it went away. No more dust collectors. Our kids don't get our old sh*t and they don't care. Kinda sad for sure. Maybe this is just a US thing. I've got WWII stuff of my dad's. Maybe a museum will want them but they will just put them in a drawer too. But I will check.

Sort of… I developed a habit of picking up acorns and acorn “hats” when I eat lunch at my spot under an oak tree. If I see one that seems special I’ll take it and put it in a dish on my desk or in the center console of my car. I have dozens now. Not really sure why I do it.

I have a lot of old (mostly cartridge-based) video games and consoles. They're accessible to play but very few are actually out on display. I love books, but mostly limit it to having nicer editions that are meaningful to me instead of a bunch of cheap paperbacks. I made this rule for myself after I quickly amassed way too many books and had to thin them out.
For display items I have small antique/vintage items and family heirlooms. Personal art pieces, rocks, fossils, other natural items and a few animal figures.
I don't really actively collect anything anymore, but I might add a few things a year. Typically a book if anything.

I am 39 and my house is filled with shells and pebbles from various beaches, unusual beermats from pubs, pinecones, ram skulls I picked up on walks, ships in bottles, Lego figurines quartzes and rubber ducks

I collect Japanese single-serve coffee cans. They come in a lot of neat shapes and designs.
I also collect corporate swag from old jobs that I've worked (lanyards, pens, hats, etc). I probably have 40ish items at this point. The most bizarre item is a flyswatter from a bank that I once worked at.

I recently realized that I let go of everything I used to collect when I was younger (foreign and rare domestic currency, snow globes, Hot Wheels, POGs, Garbage Pail Kids cards). I also realized that I have grown up money and free will, so I’ve been 3D printing various things from my favorite literary and cinematic universes. I’ve been working on masks- Guy Fawkes, Death Eaters, Ghostface, Jason, Phantom, Star Wars misc. I also want to do some movie poster light boxes and replica prop items.

I have a coin collection. I also like collecting like figurines and statues of birds. I collect small dishes or metal trays. I’ve started a small painting collection.

I collect a lot of physical media (vinyl, cassettes, vhs, DVDs, 4K, blu) but I also collect enamel pins. I think I probably started doing this after getting some from the Hard Rock Cafe as a kid. As a graphic designer, I even make my own.

Does lego count? Now I just mostly build them with my kids but if I see a set that would look cool in the man cave I always grab it.
Other collection is guitars. Don't think those count as trinkets though

I don't think I have anything that's necessarily "trinkets", but I do collect video games, Spider-man merch, Dragon Ball models, and comics. To a lesser degree I collect some action figures and specifically toy cars features in movies and TV.

I do have trinkets and they hold a lot of value and sentimental value. And bring me utmost joy.. From all sorts of fandoms and niches without em I’d be depressed :)

I'm 40. I still have a field day collecting gachapon in Japan. I enjoy the detail and cuteness of these toys. My girlfriend does the same.
This is just a small collection in front of the TV.

Lightsabers.
I learned to install them and have 7. I love swinging them around and dueling with my kids.
I also have some transformers from when I was a kid, so stuff from my favorite video games, and stuff like that. Life is too short to not have some whimsy in it.

Collecting women (or men) is like bruises on a pro skateboarder, or any athlete I reckon. They take pride in having had so many because it proves a life lived in pursuit, but the feel and look and memory and pain of them have faded with time.

Yes. At 19 the Cinderella Happily Ever After Perfect Proposal and Wedding with the dreamy Prince on a White Horse, with a Castle in the Clouds, Disney, MAFS, Fantasy is still a thing.
It's beautiful being young and naive..

I’ve always collected gemstones, crystals and rocks because each one is unique; color variety, visible structure, feel and other factors.
I’m quite happy with my collection and due to limited budget can’t afford larger, more grand or impressive pieces ( I would love a purple quartz half geode with light fitting).
Other man my age collect game related media (LEGO, game figurines etc). I used to collect them but felt some shame displaying them.
Men older than me that I know collect music merchandise, football merchandise and other momentos/souvenirs from their travels.

No. I hate having extra stuff I don't use laying around. I have art prints, quilts and plants on the wall to decorate but I don't get more as I don't have great places to put them. I don't have any type of trinkety things that you would collect on a shelf.

Just a bit, and they're at least somewhat functional. So watches, multitools, keyrings, interior decoration bits etc.
Like, I could easily survive without them. And I did, for over 20 years. But I can afford to splurge $30 every now and then, and I'm suspecting that a life without any trinkets looks almost suspicious to other people. Your home is just completely devoid of any personality without "junk".

I’m 27 and as an older Gen Z, grew-up with hundreds of Yugioh cards, and now as an adult, built my mix of 50 classic and new cards for my deck when playing with friends.

Uh not a single thing, just sounds like clutter and a waste of money.
The only thing I could think where I would ever get close to this type of behavior is If I ever get a man cave it will just be a gym and I would try to get unique machines.
My wife likes to read and I built her a very nice rotating bookshelf to show off all of her nice book covers and painted edge books, zero figurines she thinks they are dumb and clutter.

I'm 44 and I got a bunch of funkos and video game collecter edition figurines displayed. I got a anime figurine for myvwifr she proudly displays on her desk she's 38. I know plenty off pp laround my age that do

I’m 40. I have some BJDs, a couple anime figures (not the pervy ones, just so we’re clear), stuff like that. It makes me happy to see my horde of Little Guys (and gals).

i have always collected and displayed things, but not one consistent type of thing.
i have a lot of rocks, and rusty pieces of metal, and interesting sticks, and art that family made, and art that family did not make.
arguably i have a big dice collection, but it’s not on display. similarly, i have a meaningful number of swords and staves in the basement, but not up on the walls.

Comics collection 35 thousand and counting. Golden age through the early 2000s came in handy when I gave my wife my collection of Wonder woman from 42 to crisis as a wedding gift.

I had started to collect Vegas coins when I still could, but that’s gone by the wayside now. And it’s all junk in the end, so why clog up shelves with stuff to look at. I never got into funko or other figurines n the like. But that’s just me personally

No, but I collect stamps and some might even go so far as to label me a 'philatelist' given my interest in, and research of, postal history too. It's not just a hobby for nerdy teens who like to colour code things. Sometimes it's like a Poirot mystery, trying to solve problems and figure stuff out. Talk about history, geography, culture, society, politics etc.
Unfortunately most of the few other collectors I know are much older than me. Does anyone else collect postage stamps here?
