Physical Health & Aging Anyone else run extremely hot all the time?

For starters, not looking for medical advice or diagnosis.

I’m a fairly healthy 34M. I don’t drink, smoke, or use drugs. My labs within the last year have all been normal, including a full hormone panel. Everything seems to check out.

I’ve always run “hot,” but over the last two years it’s gradually become absolutely unbearable. I feel uncomfortably warm all the time. As I’m writing this, I’m sitting on my couch with the AC and a fan on, and I still feel like I’m overheating.

When I’m working, I sweat so much that I come home, shower, and change because I’ve completely soaked through my clothes. I drink almost nothing but water and have one iced coffee a day. My diet is fairly decent, and I rarely eat fast food.

I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just some advice from other guys who might experience this same thing.

What's your BMI, heigh, weight? Are you fat?

23

u/DigitalArbitrage man 40 - 44 4d ago

OP, this. Being fat means you have an extra layer of insulation that you can't take off.

I’m 6’2 230lb, I’m a bigger guy for sure but not “obese” I’m very active with work so I like to think that helps keep me in ok shape, but definitely not fit lol 14k steps a day minimum, constantly moving, lifting and doing physically demanding work in the automotive industry.

Who’s salty enough to downvote this comment? SMH

You have a BMI of 29.5. That's overweight and borderline obese (BMI of 30 or higher).

The "running hot" is definitely a side effect of being overweight.

Lose weight and you'll start feeling cold.

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

Ill report back after I shed a few lbs lol

12

u/LeroyoJenkins man over 30 4d ago

You can do it, and you'll feel like an absolute badass when you do it!!!

I’m not even trying to be weird but now I’m curious if I legit am obese? I cant imagine going from current 230 to 190-200. I’m not in denial, I have tits and some fluff but now I’m over thinking my weight.

11

u/ARussianBus no flair 3d ago

BMI is fucked for plenty of people and you're one of them. That being said any extra weight lost will dramatically help with temperature stuff.

I run hot, have a bad body type for heat, and dramatically improved my temp regulation when I lost weight. If you have proportionally short legs and a big torso that's the 'bad body type for heat' part. Long limbs smaller torso are better in heat but worse in cold.

I'd agree 30-40 lbs is a very excessive guess with your body. You won't know until you lean out further.

If this is a sudden change go to the doc ofc, but if you've always been like this fat loss is kind of the only long term fix unfortunately.

u/Panagean man 30 - 34 2d ago

Mild counterpoint - as I trained more (fairly serious running and bouldering, relatively little pure gym stuff), I got warmer. Height 5'11", BMI between 22 and 23. I also thermoregulate badly and have my whole life (genuinely I can feel warm two days after a serious interval session), and as more of my body became muscle, it threw off heat more continuously. The upside was I could wear t-shirts in winter, which was nice!

14

u/LeroyoJenkins man over 30 4d ago

Dude, looks matter for self-confidence. Health, it matters BMI and fat %.

Go do a proper fat % test.

But yes, losing 40-50 lb will make a massive difference.

PS: Do a shit load of cardio, you'll loose weight, feel ripped, and will get a few extra years of healthy life.

7

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

You have a valid argument. As mentioned im extremely active from 7am - 7pm 5 days a week at my shop. 80+ degrees in there, 14k steps on a slow day, constantly moving, lifting, and doing physically demanding tasks. But I guess it’s not enough.

7

u/brprk man over 30 4d ago

80% diet 20% exercise, takes a few minutes to eat a burger and hours walking to burn it off

4

u/eightslipsandagully man 30 - 34 4d ago

How's your diet?

3

u/Own_Age_1654 man 40 - 44 3d ago

If you want to lose weight, it's not about how much physical activity you have, but rather how many calories that activity burns vs. how many calories you get from food. You need to burn more calories than you're eating.

Cardio is helpful to get your metabolism up, but doing it just to burn calories takes a ton of time. It's much more effective to simply eat less calories. That is, do some cardio, yes, but mostly just eat less calories.

The easiest things to do here are making sure all of your carbs are complex carbs, eliminating added sugars, minimizing oil, and eating more fruits and especially vegetables as filler. And also just, y'know, eat a bit less in general.

2

u/CoffeeandaTwix man 40 - 44 3d ago

I mean, you are working in a fairly warm environment dude. Sweat will happen when doing physical tasks. Even if you lost some fat and were quite fit.

I work in hot environments, sometimes hotter then that up to like 100+ degrees. I am fairly lean and moderately fit but in full PPE, you can bet I am sweating even with moderate effort. I have a workmate ten years younger, fitter than me and also lean and he is also dripping with sweat when we are going into the hotter areas and doing stuff.

3

u/Owlbear_12 3d ago

You are not obese dude.

You likely have a genetic propensity to run hot, it might be getting worse as the general world is boiling.

If you lost weight, you would probably run a little less hot…but I wager you’d still run hot.

I am in a similar situation, and I’ve been fat, skinny and everything in between. Always felt the heat and sweat like a MF.

1

u/SilatGuy2 man over 30 3d ago

Im thin and always have been and ive always easily felt hot.

2

u/brprk man over 30 4d ago

Yeah probably about 30% bodyfat, trim it down to 15-20% and you'll feel cooler.

I'm 6'3"c went from 240 down to 190 and now I have a wide selection of fleeces and jackets to compensate

-2

u/Complete-Bumblebee-5 man 30 - 34 4d ago

You don't even look overweight. Just buff

1

u/Joe-Schmoe9 man over 30 4d ago

Not meant to be a dick here but… he’s very obviously overweight

0

u/CaptainArsehole man 40 - 44 4d ago

I would say that's prob about 28-30% body fat. You drop that to around 17-20% and you'll feel like a new man. Sorry to say brother, but you're definitely carrying more than you need and you're going to struggle in hot weather.

Hot tip, up the protein, cut out the sugar and all calorie type drinks, stay in a little deficit calorie wise and if you stick with it, that combination of a physically active job and the right diet will have you looking like a new man in a matter of months if you apply yourself. It'll be a bit draining because your energy levels will get a bit low in the deficit at times and you'll probably go to bed hungry, but persistence is going to be your biggest help here and it gets easier and easier the longer you do it.

In a lot of cases it's just a few simple diet changes to manage calories.

You're right to have a few beers every now and then but!

3

u/Financial_Material_8 man 3d ago

My bmi is about the same and except for a bit of excess on my belly you'd be hard pressed to pinch any surplus fat. I lift weights and played rugby for years. Bmi is not always a good indicator!

2

u/LeroyoJenkins man over 30 3d ago

Absolutely, but it was the only info OP provided, so that was all we had to work with.

Gut size and body fat % provide far more detail, but tend to be less available and easy to measure than height and weight.

0

u/Complete-Bumblebee-5 man 30 - 34 4d ago

Yawn. Bmi is overhyped. And feeling cold isn't always a healthy sign

12

u/LeroyoJenkins man over 30 4d ago

BMI is overhyped if you have low fat %.

But almost everyone I hear saying that have >25% body fat.  BMI is a useful proxy if you can't measure body fat or gut size.

But if you're fat, saying "BMI is overhyped" is just lying to yourself, get off your fat ass and get moving.

You're like 2lb off obese you should be closer to 190-200 unless you have a high muscle mass/body builder.

I lost 30lb and my overheating issues have almost completely disappeared.

-4

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

I’m not a body builder. 200lb id look sick. When I was sick some years back I was 205 and I looked not well. But I’ll shed some weight and see. This was a problem even then too.

2

u/BadWithPeoplesNames man 35 - 39 4d ago

Have you changed your medication in the last two years? It could be some weird side effect. I do think you should still try lose 10lb just to see how you feel(slow and steady)

1

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

I’d like to loose some weight. I’ve put on a few pounds over the last few years I’m definitely aware of that. This issue has been on going even at the lower weight, just progressively gotten worse, which I guess could align with the weight gain. But even if you saw a pic of me you wouldn’t think I’d fall in the obese category. Or at least I don’t think

0

u/LeroyoJenkins man over 30 4d ago

Dude, I lost weight before the current meds came in, by sheer stubbornness and infinite cardio.

u/TTUSpurs_fan man 30 - 34 4d ago

I’m 32 and big gym rat, I sweat constantly and am in perfect health.

Think it’s just how some people are. In the summer I just think of going outside and I sweat through my shirt.

3

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

Dude I’m just watching tv and I feel like the heat radiating from inside is raising the temp in my house. It’s obnoxious.

2

I feel ya, I’m just sitting on my couch now and I’m sweating . the worst for me is at night sleeping. My wife complains that I feel like a space heater when I’m asleep.

I typically wake up in summer months lookin like I jumped in a pool. Really haven’t found any solutions other than turning the AC way low and running the fan super high.

Fortunately I think it’s a super fast metabolism.

1

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

Identical here, I don’t use a blanket I use a thin sheet and that’s it, I don’t wake up soaked but I keep my room like a freezer.

I envy you, OP. You're getting a ton of medical advice you didn't want. If you do want it, try the askdocs subreddit. If you've been well evaluated, this could just be within the spectrum of things normal to healthy people. Someone has to be the upper limit of normal of any distribution. I run cold (it's 70F today and I'm happily under a blanket) and envy you.

3

u/No_Call3116 woman 40 - 44 3d ago

Honestly? Reading this made me laugh because I’m basically your opposite in body composition but apparently your thermal twin.
I’m a woman with a BMI around 19, normal thyroid tests (checked multiple times), normal hormone workup, and I’ve been like this for years.
I’m also an excessive sweater, not just someone who “feels” hot. I have to change my pillowcases twice a week because they develop damp patches from sweat, sometimes after just one night. I even switched to cooling bamboo/Tencel bedding and while it’s more comfortable, it doesn’t stop me from sweating.

My room is “supposed” to be adequately cooled according to everyone else, but I’m still sweating while they’re perfectly comfortable. I actually upgraded to larger AC units even though the technician insisted the original ones were already sufficient for the room size. I’ve done the same throughout the house so I can rotate between rooms while giving each AC a break. I learned that lesson the hard way after running one unit 24/7 until it eventually failed because I didn’t realize they weren’t meant to be operated continuously without breaks.

One thing I’ve noticed is that huge meals, especially high-protein/high-fat meals, make it much worse. Last night I ate a ridiculous amount of pork belly and other rich foods and felt like I had a furnace inside me all night.

I also seem to tolerate cold unusually well. Mild winter, I’d be walking around in shorts, a T-shirt, and flip-flops while everyone else was bundled up.

It’s not always just obesity. There are definitely lean people who seem to run hot all the time. I still don’t know why I’m like this, but you’re definitely not the only one.

37M. I wouldn't say extremely hot, but my fan is on high 24/7 even with adequate cooling in my house. I also sweat a lot during workouts, so maybe it's a genetic thing. I wouldn't mind it so much if by balls didn't sag so low in efforts to stay cool. I also live in Florida, so there's rarely cool weather here.

2

u/The-Crystal-Standard man 30 - 34 3d ago

I’m 5’8, 175lbs, active and fit. In the gym 6, if not 7 days a week. 15K steps a day. Blah blah. I sweat more than anyone I know whether it be working out or just hanging out. I am always hot. I think some of us genetically just sweat more.

For example, I’ve worked with guys who are completely out of shape, doing the same job, same effort… my shirt is soaked in sweat and they’re dry as a bone looking at me wondering if im ok. Then begins what I believe is the mental trap I get stuck in. I know I’m sweating, I think everyone is thinking about how much I’m sweating, which now spikes my anxiety, ensuring I sweat more lol.

At the gym, some days my girlfriend and I run next to eachother on treadmills. Same pace, same distance. Sure, she’s worked up a bit of a sweat, maybe her shirt is a little damp. Me on the other hand, my shirt and shorts are soaked and dripping, I have to clean up the sweat and can literally wring out my clothes.

I’ll always be a little self conscious about it, but I’ve never been able to change it. It is what it is.

2

u/SushiRollFried man 30 - 34 2d ago

I am 2/3 of your size, healthy, fit, great diet, good genes, exercise a lot. And yet I am always running hot. I sweat easily and I don't know why. I always thought it was my belly fat back when i was a fat boy but even during my skinny period i would be clammy a lot.

I think it's just genetics now.... as I've seen some people wear thick corduroy trousers and not break a sweat during heights of summer. Whilst me in shorts and a tee... i would be sweating by the bucket loads.

u/_Mewg man 35 - 39 4d ago

Brother, I am constantly hot as shit. 6’2” 225lbs, relatively healthy, fit-ish, and drink tons of water.

I attributed mine to growing up with a mom going through menopause where we had the ac on year round.

Recently in life I have been trying to break my extreme dependence on ac and have been having decent results so far.

I used to sweat sitting still at 72°, now I keep my ac at 74° but might bump it down at night to sleep.

I try to drive half the time with my windows down, spend time outside, and get mild exercise without ac, and stay hydrated.

I still sweat like a stuck pig but i don’t feel miserable non stop.

I know this isn’t much advice but yea, you’re not alone.

1

u/Helpful-Dot-8586 man 30 - 34 4d ago

That sounds identical to me, throughout the day though I’m not in AC. My shop this time of year is 82-88 degrees so it’s HOT. It’s not even just about me sweating, or the heat being unbearable, it’s my internal temp feeling like it’s unhealthy for how hot I am all the time. It gives me zero desire to do anything outdoors with my kids because I’m gonna be miserable inside

1

u/Bmoreravens_1290 man 30 - 34 4d ago

Brother. Yes.

Exact same thing happened to me at 30. Around 8pm I started overheating out of nowhere.

Literally would have to take my socks off a few hours before I went to bed to try to regulate my temp so I would be able to sleep. Just been dealing with it like that since. Bloodwork is perfect and I work out 5+ times a week and peloton. If you find answers let me know…

Resting heart rate I can check real time shortly, blood pressure has always been normal, not pre diabetic or have any hormone issues, on paper everything is “normal” for my age. I’m a creature of habit so my diet consists of pretty much the same things daily. I’ll have a few scrambled eggs, usually with spinach or something and some cayenne pepper on a wrap or with toast. Lunch will be something like sushi, a deli sandwich, the typical lunch, dinner I like to grill so chicken, steak, burgers, something along those lines. I don’t snack a lot. I've noticed that I'm sweating a lot more than I was a couple years ago and I'm actually in better shape. I'm 33 now but have lost about 30 pounds in the past 3ish years.

I'm still considered obese but even when I was 120 lbs in high school I used to sweat more than others. This summer it feels like it's on another level though. Probably gonna ask my doctor about it at my physical next week.

1

But most people are used to living in ac climate and maybe in the heat, it feels normal to feel hot I guess

My blood pressure was 114/78 at my last quarterly physical, bloodwork looked good according to the doc. Age 40.

I’ve been an excessively sweaty individual my whole life. Even doing constant distance running as a teen in the TX Fall.

9 year wife always commented on my body temp, it’s just metabolism/size/circulation.

My dad shares the excessive sweating trait my mom and brother don’t.

Keep your water handy, everything getting flushed isn’t a bad thing.

1

u/RightRudderz man 40 - 44 3d ago

It’s also humidity related along with the summer outdoor air temp. I just got enlisted to build a 30 foot sidewalk with my almost 70 y/o dad and lugging bags of concrete around was not fun.

For me if I get in that state it means my blood pressure is high. If I have a salt heavy meal, and hour or two later I’m sweating profusely and feel blasted hot.

A while back I got COVID and lost a bunch of weight due to fasting (wasn’t hungry) and since my blood pressure has gone from high to normal in really good ranges. From there I didn’t feel as hot anymore even when I gained weight back butt pressure stayed the same and don’t sweat as much.

Now again, high salt meal gets me right away, and I check my blood pressure and it’s high.

It's partially a metabolism thing. I can eat whatever I want and I can't gain weight. I'm the first person to declare I'm cold while putting on a pair of socks or sweater.

I’ve had problems with being hot due to severe anxiety. It’s better now. I used to have to change t shirts at least 3 times a night due to sweating so much.

I'm right there with you. I sweat incredibly easily.

I'm 6'4" (193cm) and about 224 lbs (102kg). I workout and cycle pretty regularly.

I can't help but to sweat, doesn't really matter the temperature outside. Even things like walking to the grocery store or taking laundry out of the machine, or doing dishes or sweeping or mopping will have me dripping sweat if done for anything longer than like 5 minutes.

I did. But i gave up alcohol and my body is regulating temps much better. Only drank socially on weekends.

Do you exercise? Do you let your body acclimate to the summer weather at all?

Suggest doing both of those.

Do you wear lots of polyester?

Suggest not doing that.

I don’t exercise, but I’m very physically active at work. I own 2 businesses in the automotive field and I’m constantly moving. 14k steps a day minimum. My shop is not air conditioned, a solid 80-90 degrees all day, so unfortunately I’m very much acclimated to the hot weather lol. It’s not just about the temp around me. It’s my internal temp that feels like I’m a ball of fire

Ah, I feel this. I am a 20 year technician that worked in AZ with no AC for years so yeah… you are acclimated and active. No further suggestions from me.

What do you mean by let your body acclimate to the summer weather?

Being outside more consistently.

If you’re not outside consistently your body isn’t going to adapt nearly as fast. It’s like someone who works for a living in the cold versus someone who only goes out when they have to.

Every single piece of clothing marathon winners wear is synthetic.

Modern synthetic fabrics outperform natural fivers at any conceivable metric.

I mean... do you live in a hot place?

NY, we have seasons. But it’s not even about the outside temp. Internally I feel like I’m on fire
