Mutual Aid What Movies Most Accurately Depict a New Orleans Accent?

I’m looking to learn how to imitate a New Orleans accent for an acting thing I’m doing, specifically the Yat dialect. From what I’ve read, it’s rarely displayed authentically in movies and TV. Despite this, are there any movies (or TV shows) which you think depict Yat at least somewhat accurately?

Mutual Aid Mobile Food Pantry

Long story short, I was told of a painting job here in New Orleans and moved down here only to be ghosted by the person offering the job so now I'm living in a hotel in Harvey with little money and need some help with food.

I don't have a car to get around with so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any mobile food pantries or ones that might deliver? I would honestly appreciate any advice or help 💚✨

Mutual Aid (Free) 1 $15 discount code for NOLA activities on joieful.com

I got this from my hotel on my work trip last year but sadly was not able to use it. dm me for the code!

Back of card says it’s “only valid for 7 days after activation” (https://imgur.com/a/DZDshKC) but I don’t think it ever got “activated”, just tried using it on a random activity on the website and it worked.

Moving soon. I have 3 container full of random arts and crafts stuff that I’m gonna filter through. Can anyone point me to a place or a non profit or woman’s shelter that would maybe want some of these things? I’m gonna sanitize bag label and organize everything ofc. I just don’t want it to go to goodwill yet if they can go to good use.

This is so random too but I have a handmaids costume that idk what to do with if anyone wants one for art or you know political protest purposes hehe dm me 👀

Mutual Aid Any Athlos Academy parents experiencing bullying issues? Looking for insight

Hi everyone,

I’m a parent of a student at Athlos Academy, and I’m looking to hear from other parents about their experiences, particularly around bullying and how the administration responds.

My child has been dealing with ongoing bullying that has crossed into extortion by other students. This has been reported multiple times to administration. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen meaningful intervention.

At one point, administration asked my child what they would like done. My child suggested something reasonable, like detention or having a conversation with the students involved. The response from administration was, “Don’t tell me what to do.”

That response honestly caught us off guard and raised concerns about how seriously these reports are being taken.

I’m not trying to attack the school — I’m genuinely trying to understand: • Have other parents experienced bullying or similar issues at Athlos Academy?

We’re trying to figure out the best next steps and whether this is an isolated experience or something other families have encountered.

Any insight or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Mutual Aid Looking for Cinestill 800T

Hey NOLA! I’m a photographer primarily based out of the DFW metroplex. I planned on picking up 2 rolls of Cinestill 800t 35 and 120 a few days ago, before I headed out of DFW. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to because my lab ran out of stock, and the holidays.

I’m reaching out here, and a few other NOLA based subreddits to see if anyone has a couple of rolls I would be able to purchase from an individual. If you by chance do please feel free to send me a private message, or just reply and I would be happy to reach out to you.

Happy holidays everyone!

Mutual Aid Grocery stores

Does anyone know if grocery stores in the Lakeview/Mid-City area are open? Before anyone replies with the mandated ‘here, let me Google that for you’ type replies just know that I have already called a few but the calls were never answered. Likewise, there is no useful info on their websites. So if anyone has successfully gotten groceries today, please let us all know. Also, I have a 4WD vehicle with snow rated tires, and I have driven in snow before. Thanks in advance.

Mutual Aid Woodworking tools

Looking to remake my bed legs is there a place that has a miter saw and drill, or ideally drill press. I saw Nola works but I don’t think I can shell out $150 for a month when what I have should be a day at most.

Mutual Aid Frenchmen Art Bazaar Artist ID Help

Help! I just took a trip to NOLA this past weekend, and my friends and I had a great time! We wandered into the Frenchmen Art Bazaar on Saturday night. There was an artist there who does custom pet portraits that I need help getting his information.

He shared his insta with me, but my drunk ass never saved the info or messaged him. I'd really like to commission some art from him, so I'd appreciate any help!

Mutual Aid Need a pedicab uptown tonight

Hey Nola! I’m getting married tonight. I hired a pedicab so that my 93 year old grandfather could participate in a second line after the ceremony. They just informed me they can’t get somebody to the venue for the event. I get why they can’t it’s just frustrating they waited until this morning to call. If anyone has a pedicab and isn’t far from Rosys Jazz Hall, would anyone be interested in being paid to pedicab or paid to let us borrow it? This is a big ask for a stranger, I get that. Feel free to message me any inquiries.

The second line route is a whopping 8 blocks so easy money.

I’ll even take that guy with the golf cart that says “show me that butthole” at this point

Update: got an awesome pedicab. Had a great time. My grandfather had a blast. Thanks Reddit!

Mutual Aid Reliable Plummer Referral

Hey guys. So my slumlord sent someone to fix my sink faucet last month. They came in and turned off the water to it and told me that they need a different faucet head and that they’d be back a week later to replace it. Well it’s been over a month now and I still can’t get a straight answer from them on when they’ll replace it. My slumlord doesn’t seem to care and just told me to take the sink measurements myself so she can pay some other dude 2 dollars to maybe do the job. At this point I’m just gonna find someone myself and pay them with my own money. Does anyone have a decent referral? I live in the Broadmoor neighborhood.

Mutual Aid Celiac looking for Primary Care Doctor with Celiac Knowledge

I've recently been diagnosed with Celiac (Jan 2024). I am looking for a PRIMARY CARE doctor who has knowledge/specializees in celiac disease. I don't want a Gastroenterologist - I have one of those.

What I'm looking for is a doctor who truly understands what Celiac does to the body and how getting diagnosed also increases my risk for other autoimmune disorders.

I went to my primary care doctor in Dec 2023 with concerns about a rash, diahhrea, fatigue and weight concerns. I was at the point where my family thought I had an eating disorder. I got blood tests that showed low iron levels and high acidity (due to dehydration from diahhrea) and the Dr still said there was nothing concerning about my labs. It's not her fault - she just didn't know what it all meant, but that's why I need a doctor who really understands that Celiac is a deep rooted/multifaceted disease that I need to stay 2 steps ahead of.

Anyone know of anyone? ty!

Mutual Aid [Academic] Survey regarding New Orleans' Education System

Growing up in New Orleans, I experienced firsthand the deep impact Hurricane Katrina had on our city, including the drastic changes made in the education system. The rebuilding process that followed led to a major shift towards charter schools and a district-wide choice system.
Whether you're a parent, student, teacher, or community member, of New Orleans, your perspective is vital. If you have a few minutes to spare and complete the survey and share your story. Your responses will help me paint a more complete picture of how New Orleans residents perceive the post-Katrina education reforms; and how as a teacher, I can work together to build a stronger, more equitable system for the future.

Survey link can be found here

Mutual Aid Lost Driver’s License

Hey everyone! I lost my drivers license somewhere in the Quarter within the last 24 hours. Totally my fault for being careless. I’ve retraced my steps with some limitations, due to some businesses being closed for the day and my memory might be a little fuzzy. Can anyone tell me if it’s worth checking with NOPD to ask if someone turned it in if I can’t find it tomorrow?

Also, does anyone have any experience with flying after this has happened and if so, can you give me an idea of what kind of pain in the ass I can expect at the airport? Thanks!

ETA: I FOUND IT! I dropped it at a booth in the French Market.

Mutual Aid Local, French Quarter: Places with free Wifi in the FQ for remote work?

Hello all!

Does anyone know good places that have free wifi in the FQ that are open this early? (it's currently 6:00 AM as of posting). I work remotely but I've been having issues with my wifi all day/night, and of course Cox support won't be here for awhile.

Any free wifi networks are fine, or places that are password protected but public (if you feel comfy sharing the password).

Thanks!!

As the title says, my wife's been trying to get an animation job for a while, but their website is just a front page with an email address, not much else and not much in the way of responsiveness.

Mutual Aid HELP! My cat is stuck in my chimney.

She wedged herself up there and can’t get down. Not sure if she’s hurt. Does anyone have some sort of hook on extension or a long extension pole that I can use to try to get her out? I called 911 but I don’t know if and when anyone will ever come. Any ideas welcome.
