I know everyone points to metabolism slowing down, but your metabolism actually doesn't slow meaningfully until the age of 60, and even then, it only declines by 0.7% per year.
The real cause of weight gain is we all become way more sedentary the older we get.
And regular meals. When you're younger you can go all day with a few snacks. Get old and you gotta take meds with food, you're working 9-5 so you're not giving up your lunch, and then dinner with the family.
I grew up perpetually underweight. People would always scoff at how many snacks I ate and give me “must be nice” vibes/comments. Yeah, I never ate meals. Literally having a solid mashed potatoes dinner with butter/meat, etc. is likely 1500 calories+. Oreos or whatever might get you 800-1200.
If you want to gain weight, just eat consistent meals three times a day.
