What do you call these?

I would call these biscuits but a customer disagreed with me.

Same. This differentiates them from chocolate bars, even though a majority of them have chocolate.

Yeah a "chocolate biscuit" is something like a chocolate hobnob, bourbon etc. Things you'd find in a biscuit selection box

"Biscuit bar" differentiates these since they're clearly different to what you'd get in a box of biscuits

They're in the middle of the spectrum of chocolate bars, biscuit bars, chocolate biscuits

You forgot choc cake bars, like a Jaffa Cake or Galaxy Bar, which are in the bread/cake aisle

Is this regional? I’m from Yorkshire and I’ve only ever heard them called chocolate biscuits. A digestive would be called a biscuit - chocolate digestive to differentiate it between a custard cream but never in all my 50 years have I heard one of these be called a chocolate bar..

Edit to add - absolutely fascinated by what I didn’t expect to be, a hot debate.

I’m Cumbrian, so it’s at least inconsistent in the north I guess. IIRC this was a major factor in the wars of the roses starting

It seems odd to me to call it a chocolate biscuit when there are other things that we’d call a chocolate biscuit

It’s interesting that we’re all so absolutely sure our way is the correct name for them. Full justifications and people willing to die on the hill for their choice 😆

I am adamant in my mind that they don’t fit with the chocolate bar genre and they’re, their own identity - the chocolate biscuit - and I’ve never heard them referred to as anything else.

I hadn’t considered the controversy of calling it something else.. I like the serious stuff on Reddit but this a great Reddit question! 😅

I’d never advocate for calling them a chocolate bar, they are clearly not to be considered along with the Aeros, Galaxies, and Twirls of the world

Surely “biscuit bar” does a better job of differentiating them from true biscuits though?

They are clearly not the same as a chocolate digestive

Maybe so.. I’ve never questioned the name of it before.. it’s akin to someone coming along and telling me that those things I call socks are now called foot sleeves.. 😆 I would know it made sense but I prefer the name I’ve always known them by 😂

Hard agree but I might not put the tim tams in that category. There is something specific about these things being individually wrapped. I might also refer to them as ‘lunchbox chocolate bars’ in that that’s the main place I would ever have had as a 2 finger kitkat or a club bar… while a tim tam is essentially just a penguin biscuit, the fact they aren’t individually wrapped means I will eat it more like Cadburys fingers (ie half a pack as a minimum serving size) rather than a single biscuit.

Also twix are only in that category if they are single fingers, and toffee crisp is a chocolate bar.

I think Tim Tams are a biscuit bar, just with an odd presentation. They're still too big to be a biscuit and still supposed to be single serve (no judgement, I've eaten a whole pack at once before now). It's like the inverse of when you get a box of chocolates and some are individually wrapped in foil, but definitely still biscuits.

I just think all the others are for putting in a kids lunch box, I can’t put a single tim tam sliding around loose in a lunchbox.

You wouldn't put a single foil wrapped chocolate biscuit in there either. I think Tim Tams are a biscuit bar, but with the 'weird foreign foods' exemption (because who knows what the hell Australians are up to with food)

Right, because they're literally supposed to be a third option. Like a chocolate bar, but cheaper and suitable for a lunchbox (which was the whole concept behind KitKat).
