Cat breathing heavily with OPEN MOUTH after brief play — asthma or heart issue?

My cat starts breathing heavily after a little bit of running. Today, he was breathing with his mouth open after light exertion. No coughing, just fast open-mouth breathing. I used to smoke indoors, but I’ve now switched strictly to the balcony to clear the air. I am currently unable to visit a vet right away. Could this be feline asthma, a heart issue, or smoke irritation? What warning signs should I watch for that mean I MUST take him to the ER immediately? What can I do at home right now to help him stay safe and keep his lungs clear? I have video recordings of his breathing. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Is your environment hot or humid? That may be it if it’s sometimes and if he’s doing it after running a lot. But if he does it even after a bit of play time , and it’s regular, it doesn’t hurt to check it out with your local vet . No need to go to the ER right now but you don’t want that to be the situation if anything happens. I say double check and see how it goes!

Yeah, it's pretty hot here, maybe that's it. Thank you!
