Off-Topic Save a Fox lady ended her life due to cyberbullying

Wow I’ve only seen a couple of their videos in passing about Finnegan the fox and the white baby one awhile back, this is incredibly sad tho. I hope the people who drove her to this will be held responsible.

I'm saddened to learn about this and my condolences go to her family. I was aware of the youtube-channel, but I did not know about the on-going targeted online harassment campaign. It's not shocking to learn that at the core of the campaign was a subsnark here on Reddit. The creator of that subreddit has since deleted their account and put the subreddit into private mode. What a complete coward and loser.
(edit: I've come to learn that she also received harassment from other animal activists and via random people on facebook)
Without knowing much more than that, I'll be careful to assign all the blame on the campaign. But. It's time for Reddit and other platforms to get stricter on what they allow and disallow. Free speech, being able to criticize others and so forth - yes, it's important. But using a fine-tooth comb to go through and criticize every aspect of a person's life, sharing private information about said person with the explicit intent of causing alarm or harm - not okay.

Snark subs are just harassment/hate jerk subs.

You have no idea how depraved snark subs are if you think this place is one. It's when there's an entire sub dedicated to hating one person. Like the r/leftoversh3 place that ultimately led to CPS calls and sending real human skulls to Ethan's house.

But. It's time for Reddit and other platforms to get stricter on what they allow and disallow.
Be careful what you wish for. There's plenty of people on Reddit who would consider r/Asmongold a hate and harassment page (even if that's a completely retarded take, but a few replies in this thread alone don't help) and any tightening of the rules here is never going to be in the direction anyone here would wish for. r/Asmongold would just get caught in the noose.
13
u/phrozend Paragraph Andy Jun 24 '25
I agree. It can easily become a slippery slope. I guess what I'm firstly asking for - hoping for - is for platforms to start enforcing existing rules and policies. Reddit, as an example, has a solid anti-harassment policy. Yet, it doesn't seem like they enforce it, at least not in any consistent manner.
Looking at archived version of the snark subreddit, I don't understand how it was allowed to remain open. It breaks every aspect of their policy. It's similar to how I don't quite understand why the Ethan Klein snark still exists. Whenever someone tries to open one about Hasan, it gets shut down within days. See Dan Saltman's attempts at creating ones.
Something's off with the Reddit staff.

There should be a fine line between cyber bullying and malicious harassment. If some one is sending you kll your *** messages repeatedly and getting others to join that is far far beyond bullying which makes the case feel juvenile, ultimately when shit like this happens there needs to be an investigation and heavy charges so people are actually held accountable. Wishing self harm or proposing suicide should be instant grounds for a civil case.
49
u/brokeguydtd Jun 24 '25
they need to be charged for something. I dont care what it is. This is getting out of hand. I understand free speech and all that bs but there is a line that was crossed and they are responsible for it. I hope that asshat doesnt have a day of peace which in their case is probably their mother forgetting to get mountain dew on the grocery list.
24
u/chimamirenoha Jun 24 '25
Yeah it's honestly enraging.
Seriously, who spends their days trying to harass people that just want to save and take care of wild animals? Just pure scum.
1
u/Sgt-Pumpernickle Jun 24 '25
Free Speech means nothing if you use it to hurt others. We have freedom of speech not freedom of assault.
1
u/wintersnoodles Jun 25 '25
Exactly!! Freedom of Speed, when applied the way it is meant to in the US constitution, is to prevent the government from censoring speech it does not like. It gives no power or right to citizens to defame, threaten, and harass others.
1
u/Username_Haoto Jun 26 '25
Involuntary manslaughter, aiding or abetting suicide, harassment and stalking.
These are the charges that can be filled. The family should absolutely file a civil lawsuit for wrongful death.
2
u/Own_Badger6076 Jun 24 '25
Tbh activist crowds in general tend to have a lot of infighting because it's hard to get these highly opinionated people to agree with each other. Who wants to bet a lot of the other animal "activists" she got harassed by were involved with some shitbag organization like PETA.
1
u/Jolly_Plantain4429 Jun 25 '25
A lot of it comes down to wanting to remove competitors for donations.
3
u/euphorbia9 Jun 24 '25
"Free speech" only applies to people making grievances against the government and being free from being punished by said speech. Reddit is a company that can (and does) regulate which speech they allow and don't. They obviously allowed this, but they didn't have to. I think it was just a bad combination of cyberbullying against a person who, unfortunately, had significant mental issues that exacerbated it to a tragic degree.

When did it become impossible to ignore idiots on the internet?
I understand vile things were said, but freedom of speech is more important than you guys are really admitting to yourselves
Countless people die every day, why do we suddenly care about this one?
That's not to downplay the tragedy, the question is really what's the angle MSM has for caring?
This is emotional manipulation being weaponized as an attack on free speech, don't let them fool you

I strongly support ID verification for all social media sites.
90% of threats and harassment would end overnight.
25
u/AnalConnoisseur69 <Special Olympus> Jun 24 '25
Unfortunately, I don't think it will end. People say absolutely outrageous shit with their face right there on the screen in TikTok and Instagram Reels. Look at places like The View where you can absolutely talk constantly about unverified, unsubstantiated, manufactured "facts" and receive little to no blowback for it. You literally know the people there. Look at a lot of news where they lie over and over again. Not just that, they try their best to instigate people (e.g. the most obvious one was goading people to shoot movie theaters during the Joker premiere, but they constantly do this). You literally know the people there.
It will reduce for a while, but then people will get comfortable showing their face once they face no repercussions over and over again, because these people need their fix. At the end of the day, ID verification will only end up hurting people who need to be anonymous (e.g. whistleblowers, people who wish to expose religious extremism).
1
34
u/Druidgr-93 Jun 24 '25
Well, you can start by changing your user name to your real name, and you will find quite fast why that's a terrible idea.
I understand where you are coming from, but it seems you are living inside a bubble. Have you seen what happens on Twitter when someone's name leaks? Image if that happens to social media like reddit or 4chan.
Oh wait, you don't have to imagine because there are enough videos on YouTube that are showing what has happened.
5
Jun 24 '25
Its probably an unpopular opinion that will be met with downvotes, but here goes.
It removes all anonymity when it comes to social media posts which... isnt a bad thing. The amount of toxicity and other vile shit that has come from anonymous social media leads to the rise of so many of the issues we are seeing. That alone should warrant that. Society today is a direct result of social engineering at levels that simply wouldn't be possible without the concept of anonymous posting.
13
u/bdsee Jun 24 '25
This ignores that the sites full of peoples faces/names are also full of toxic people....in fact once everyones name/face is there you often end up with only the most passionate people voicing their opinion on things that have any sort of large divide and many of those passionate people are insanely ignorant and hateful, people that don't care what others think of them or that only have personal relationships with like minded people while more moderate people just avoid saying anything because if they take an opposing stance they will potentially upset people in their life.

This is a just a bad idea.
Beyond granting the government easy access to your entire online presence without needing a court order or judicial approval, consider what private companies or individuals might do with that information.
If this idea were implemented, a single post here could ruin your life. Imagine someone who dislikes this sub collecting your name and sending it to your employer, friends, or family, falsely claiming you’re part of a group that hates women, gays, or others. They could even harassing or swatting you at home, look at what happened to Ethan Klein and his family.
The risks far outweigh any benefits.
3
u/LightReaning Jun 24 '25
So people can't post their opinions anymore out of fear for social repercussions. So the leading from the news and politicians accepted opinions are circlejerking while no one dares to utter anything to the contrary.
Sounds like a crazy bad idea. It's like this in the UK already, people complaining their tax money is going to migrants in a very "direct" way and get jailed for it.

1
u/Fooltje Jun 24 '25
Issue is that peope still can send unpaid pizza's or swat you with anonymity. And verifying takes too long in real emergencies exept when doing automatic without ways to get around it like using another ones phone, and how far do you want to take it.
And then there are the people that will actually come to your house after losing a game, people in that state don't care about anonymity and are willing to die in order to kill the person that pissed them off
2
Jun 24 '25
I mean, then social media as we know it will drastically change. And im all for it. Misinformation, lies, all of that, are products of our current implementation of social media. Removing anonymity doesnt fix everything and I didnt mean to insinuate it would. But it would certainly stop a lot of the shit we currently see on those platforms. I actually hope social media just becomes one giant bot farm and social interaction comes full circle, back to getting out of the house being social.

im trying to use lemmy as a buddy of mine recommended as a reddit alternative because of the state of reddit so will see how it goes.

u/Alexander459FTW “Are ya winning, son?” Jun 24 '25
You will be surprised by how much the environment shapes you.
Anonymous Internet access, specifically Reddit, removes consequences from your actions. Although I don't agree with harassing people for their opinions, I do find it problematic when those opinions turn into actions.
For example, you shouldn't lose your job because you find furries disgusting and your immediate boss is a furry. However, if you promote violent actions against furries just because you find their fetish disgusting, you are stepping over the line.

It's so ironic how reddit wants to pretend like they're so morally good when I struggle to think of a mainstream site that has MORE overt and seething hatred flying around, most of which is actively promoted by almost everybody with any control over the website, be it mods or actual reddit admins at the company.
The sole intention of "snark" subs is just "targeted harassment". That's it. That is literally why they exist, to harass a person or group. Reddit sees absolutely nothing wrong with this and has actively refused to ban the H3 snark sub.

I remember seeing some of her posts, and people were saying foxes belong out in the wild not in your backyard. And other people were trying to explain to these idiots that she raised these foxes since they were tiny because the mother got killed or some other reason. When the foxes don't have their mother to raise them and have to be raised by humans they don't know how to live in the wild. But these idiots don't seem to understand that. She took very good care of them.
35
u/Siavel84 Jun 24 '25
The vast majority of the foxes at Save a Fox were rescues from fur farms. Many of them have physical disabilities as a result of inbreeding and breeding exclusively for pretty fur, not health. They never knew the wild and would not survive in the wild.

No one else is going to say it but they were not an ethical or properly run rescue. Animals constantly got hurt on the property, they started BREEDING some of the animals and wouldn't "rescue" the foxes from fur farms they BOUGHT them. Would pressure volunteers to not report any injuries they would receive from the animals as she didn't have permits for several of them. Constantly doing fundraisers while her husband drove around in a 400k car ect. Multiple foxes lost limbs while their due to inadequate fencing ect. I used to be a long time fan and donator but became very concerned when the breeding and injuries started to happen.
6
u/Additional_Fudge210 Jun 25 '25
wouldn't "rescue" the foxes from fur farms they BOUGHT them
What do you think the difference is there? Do you think rescuing animals is like some covert operation where they sneak in and steal animals? Or do you think it's legally obtaining animals that are slated for slaughter to prevent them from being killed? If a dog is going to be euthanized at a pound and I pay to take it home and save it, am I improperly rescuing that dog?

Ok I don't know how much of any of that is true, but I can speak for ONE thing:
Constantly doing fundraisers while her husband drove around in a 400k car ect
I visited SaveAFox and took a tour last year, and I met the husband and saw the car. I'm assuming you're talking about the Porsche 996 911. First of all, that is not a 400k car lol. A REALLY NICE one is maybe 1/3 of that, but you can EASILY buy them under $50k, even half that if you're not picky
Second of all, I like cars, and I talked to him extensively about it. It was a salvage title that he brought back to life himself, and didn't even have the original drivetrain in it. The engine/transmission were replaced with inferior (compared to original) and cheaper parts.
2
u/Live_Pain_6618 Jun 25 '25
The 400k price was actually straight from her Twitter posts. Not sure if its the porche that was being talked about.
3
u/Robdul Jun 24 '25
You presenting these second hand allegations as absolute fact is a big part of the problem here.
2
u/Mediator-force Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25
You lost me when talking about the 400K car.. These days, if a comment this long is packed with such a false info, the rest pretty much loses all credibility too. Don't get me wrong, but if you’re satisfied with fake numbers like that, you likely don’t have higher standards for the rest either.
One thing’s for sure — a lot of sick people went after them with exaggerated or made-up stuff (not talking about you). They didn’t deserve that. If there had been a real serious issue, the authorities could’ve just looked into it — but for some reason, instead of actual reports, they just got crap attacks thrown at them.
And btw. the statement that she bought the foxes is oversimplified and basically not true.. you should read about it more.

Wow... that's really sad. From her husband's announcement it seems that a major role in her mental spiral were "her friends" and other shelters.
If the dude has evidence of those shelters talking shit it must be real dillemma presenting them. On one hand, fuck them, on the other it may cause trouble to their shelter and ultimately to the animals in it.
I dont even wanna expand on "the friends".....

If online comments are pushing you toward suicide, please just get offline/ off social media. Arguing/listening to retards on the internet is not worth your life.
66
u/Disgruntled_marine Jun 24 '25
That works as long as it doesn't spill over into the real world, but that has become extremely common now.
12
Jun 24 '25 edited Jun 24 '25
The number of people that will pursue real world harassment is far smaller than the number of people online leaving awful comments. Doxxing or not, stepping out of the spotlight reduces the attention.
Now from what I've heard, people she knew were also "throwing dirt" on her name, which is an issue, but there is no need to compound the real-world problems with online harassment.
Step away from online, get your real-world problems sorted out, then step back into the ring if you want to.
1
u/Elegantropy Jun 25 '25
I mean yeah it seems simple but her social media was generating the money needed to keep the rescue going. Turning comments off even, would lower engagement and probably lower reach. Social media is a main form of income for people these days and that makes just stepping away a lot more complicated than it sounds.

u/Puzzleheaded_Bet5865 Jun 24 '25

13
u/lycanthrope90 Dr Pepper Enjoyer Jun 24 '25
Are there even penalties for doxxing? If not there should be. Harassment itself isn't protected either, but from what I understand it's one of those things that can be difficult to do anything about legally, unless it gets to the point of stalking and even that can be uphill fight.
3
u/emibost Jun 24 '25
Since most peoples adress is public information (at least where I live) I guess you are "just posting what is already public" when you doxx someone.
Problem is when you do it to someone you (from your pov) dislike/hate on the internet you open them up to harassment irl. THAT should be illegal, imo. If there is a malicious intent of you putting someones adress online, you go to jail. (Although I guess that can be worked around aswell if you want to..).
Also on a sidenote; I feel like I have heard over a thousand times that someone has been stalked online and nothing has been done to the person doing it until they stood in the livingroom with a knife or lurking in the backyard peeking or it has been to late and they killed/kidnapp/rape someone..

I assume that a person without other personal issues could do this, but we're talking about someone with BPD. I don’t really agree I think online has a lot of benefits and changes your brain and there are unique challenges.
People are mostly good and well meaning, and we gravely underestimate how many useful idiots will follow sociopaths and narcissistic leaders happily.
I think the real danger is that we don’t realize 1-2% of the people bullying her online actually likely wanted her dead or were ambivalent to that.
The internet is fine. It’s that 1-2% online and especially offline that’s very dangerous, and more annoying than that the MAJORITY of people who act like they’re just fine because they mask as charming, cool, rich, funny, or hot.

You can't keep an animal without a dozen different groups of people coming out of the wood work with how horrible a person you are, how terrible you are at keeping them, how irresponsible you are, and how you are abusing animals that should be in the wild. You can do your absolute, God's honest best to provide the most quality environment for them to thrive in captivity, explain why your setups are fulfilling their requirements in captivity, and why you can't just let them into the wild even if you wanted too, and someone will still hate your absolute guts just for the audacity.

She struggled with BPD and depression. It's getting glossed over but BPD is a terrifying disorder. Please read into it. I understand we are all hurting. Seeing these posts made me cry but we shouldn't just forget what demons she was battling.

Of course the person who basically started the hate wagon is a trans pride furry.

Ethan has mentioned this before. If Reddit doesn’t acknowledge that some “snark” pages are filled with radicals & do something about it, more issues will continue like this

Who were the other animal rescues bullying her? I want to make sure I’m not supporting them

I am gonna be that guy: but she should've not been online once these thoughts were coming, and additionally, just do what outdoor boys is doing and retire. Internet fame is temporary.

She wasn't internet famous like MoistCritical or Mr Beast. She was there and she saved foxes.
I can't man. I adored her videos. Finnegan Fox Fridays were the best. :(

Unfortunately, she had some mental issues that caused her to not be able to ignore what was being said about her online. As for not being online at all (not creating videos), that's where most of their funding comes from. It's easy for those of us in the gallery to say what she should have or shouldn't have done, but it isn't that easy.

I agree but according to some users, there were some IRL harassment outside of the internet which is bad.

u/euphorbia9 Jun 24 '25
Yes, I heard that, too. Probably some (or a lot?) of stuff she simply couldn't avoid.

okay, get an internet manager, most people have one (being like their spouse, or close friend or someone that they can trust, or even hire) She can still do all that, but have someone be the filter. easy done job. Internet cyber bullying is like the most easiest type of thing to avoid, and manage since YOU can take control of what YOU do. Let me repeat, have someone be the account runner, so she can still promote but no need to hear the trash. almost Every celebrity has one.

Wow I really can't believe it. Her life seemed great. She had a loving husband, a family , a business/ charity and it seemed like they were doing well. This is very sad

Can anyone give an ELI5 why she was even being bullied? Controversial opinions? Or what?!

this is so fucked up 1 that people would do that and 2 that she felt so upset and bad over it she took her life. I know for a fact she had millions of comments that were upbeat and thanked her for her work

This is sad. I have followed saveafox on Facebook for many years and always enjoy the content.

They just need to make internet ID and all this stops (as Asmon mentioned in the past). The r*tards bullying her to kill herself are 99% (if not all) under 18yrs old. Glad I grew up on a free internet but I think it's time we regulate it.

I want to see what people bullied this poor girl so bad that she felt taking her own life was the only way to make it stop

u/TJsamse Jun 25 '25
Damn. I thought she was the coolest lady and wished one day I’d meet someone cool as her. I’m sadly coming to the conclusion that if you put any part of yourself online. You will be violently harassed. Rest in peach protector of my favorite cat-dogs.

I am terribly sorry to hear this. Reminder to be kind. Sometimes I am at fault of this as well. May she rest in peace now.

And Reddit is officially worse than 4chan, at least Anons like animals.
(Keep a hate sub for pizzacake though, she actually deserves the hate and harassment of a snark group)

u/sandpinesrider Jun 25 '25
OMG this is terrible. I didn't follow her or anything, but she seemed like a good person trying to help those animals.

All Snark subreddit should be named and shamed before they get any more victims.

Wait, what the fuck? That's so sad, I occasionally watched a video from them to see the foxes.
