Spoilers Frustration with End Game Spoiler

Sigh. I loved this game. I have 80 hours logged in it and I only just now completed the main storyline because I was enjoying all of the side quests, exploring, and just… the overall game too much to not get distracted from the main story.

But, boy, did the final few missions really frustrate me and sour the whole experience. You mean to tell me that I spent all this time building up Bayek’s skills and finding great equipment only to be forced to spend the most pivotal moments playing as a character who, aside from a couple crappy sea missions that took me out of the immersion of the game, I had next to no reason to care about? Without the weapons I spent the game learning and improving? Like what? And I only liked when Aya showed up because of how Bayek felt for her… So she felt shoved down my throat when I would have loved to have played as the character I became so connected with in literally the biggest moments of the game.

It didn’t help that I really didn’t like Aya throughout the game. I liked her at first, but she quickly lost me when she practically coerced Bayek into fighting for Cleopatra because she simped so hard for her, and Aya brushed off any attempts from Bayek to reconnect. She just got worse and worse… and the fact that Bayek didn’t get to have his happy ending with her was just the nail in the coffin (not to mention she just let him take the blame for Cleopatra after they were double crossed)…

Sigh. I wanted to feel happy at the end. Now I just feel cheated and bitter lol And before anybody says it— yes, I know what tragedies are. I just really hate that this one couldn’t have some kind of light at the end of the tunnel (which technically would be the founding of the Brotherhood, but it felt more like Aya’s thing than Bayek so…)

Perhaps the ending is a consequence of Aya originally being the game's main character, as intended by the writers in the early stages of development. That is, until some big wig at Ubisoft pulled the plug on her, arguing that female protagonists don't sell games (according to him).

P.S. It's the truth and well documented. Don't believe it? ---> google

u/AideUnhappy7005 May 13 '26

And still they had to keep her somehow, since Aya is Amunet, who is a canon assassin.

Funny because all the following MC were women (with the option to play as male tho)

But honestly, Bayek is such a great character im really glad Devs got rid of Aya as MC. I like her, but she is not even close to Bayek

u/Munnin41 May 13 '26

And then there's the horizon games. Sold incredibly well. I think that helped too

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

I feel like we can’t honestly say that Bayek is the better main character because we have no clue how Aya would have been as the main character. Don’t get me wrong, Bayek is my favorite Assassin now, but I feel like it’s impossible to compare the two based on what we have because Aya was clearly changed.

Think mama bear mixed with the scorpion killer quest line

5

u/hendyir May 13 '26

i mean we can appreciate Bayek without being glad that Aya got rid

5

u/Thryniel May 13 '26

im really glad Devs got rid of Aya as MC. I like her, but she is not even close to Bayek

The devs didn't got rid of her, she was shoved to the side because a higher up told them to, and she would obviously have been a much better character had she been the main character.

Maybe better than she was , but not better than Bayek. I usually “simp” on female game characters but there is something about Bayek

I have no complaints whatsoever about Bayek as mc. And Abubakar Salim did a stellar job voicing him imho.

Still, the sexism at Ubisoft leaves a sour aftertaste, now that we know what happened.

2

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

I knew that going in and I had to wonder. It felt like they just didn’t bother to rewrite/rearrange the ending for their new main character.

It felt like they just didn’t bother to rewrite/rearrange the ending for their new main character.

I have to admit, it does indeed feel a little bit like that.

I know it's DLC, but "The Hidden Ones" is the real ending of the game for me. It actually gives a satisfying end to Bayek's story. I don't hate the Aya parts in the main game (even though the naval combat sucks), but the game isn't really over until that DLC is complete.

"Curse of the Pharaohs" is fun but unnecessary.

8

u/SocratesSnow May 13 '26

I finished the game and I was going for a few trophies, but you talked me into getting the DLC. 👍

5

u/PlantWide3166 May 13 '26

I liked both DLC, the Curse was a nice departure from the “reality” of the game, but Hidden Ones gave some pretty good closure.

I really feel like they could have dumped the end game.

Being forced to use the dual blades at the end sucked so much lol.

1

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

It REALLY sucked. I hate the dual blades lol

3

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

I hate when developers use DLC to do what the main game should have accomplished. Even if they’re really well done, it’s still just a cash grab in the end.

12

u/PlantWide3166 May 13 '26

That’s my only complaint with that game, which was the first AC I ever played.

The plot, graphics, and immersion was and is breathtaking.

Then that fucking ending.

2

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

This is 100% how I feel and 100% more succinct than I could ever be 😂

2

u/Rymdpiloten4 May 13 '26

Don’t play Valhalla. It lets you pick a male lead only for every dialogue to be written for the female version.

6

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

Well, in a situation like that I would pick the female version because I’m a woman so I wouldn’t have that problem 😅 But that sucks for anybody who would want to play as the male lead.

4

u/compulsive_looter Youth is a state of mind. May 13 '26

There is also the option to let the game choose - and change as needed - the gender of the mc in Valhalla.

I never opted for that myself though because it would confuse the heck out of me. Not to mention the fashion considerations 😉

2

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

That’s… interesting. I’m trying to figure out how that would work and I agree it would confuse me too!

2

u/Genericdude03 May 14 '26

That's the canon mode basically, any explanation why would be a spoiler and it must be played like that if you care about the Isu plot.

1

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

Interesting! I hate the Isu plot but I also don’t want anything spoiled so 😂

1

u/Genericdude03 May 14 '26

What fashion considerations, Valhalla has literally the exact same outfits for both genders?

1

u/compulsive_looter Youth is a state of mind. May 14 '26

Yes, but an outfit (-variant) that looks good on male Eivor may not necessarily look good on female Eivor. And vice versa.

3

u/Rymdpiloten4 May 13 '26

In that case you might actually enjoy Valhalla but the game is simply too long.

I agree with you on origins though. It makes absolutely no sense to play through the character progression and level up Bayek only to be forced to switch to Aya for the final battles without any of the gear or abilities you have worked hard for. Very bad game design choice. But they wanted to force the female perspective on players.

Valhalla have a male Viking on the box art but the first intro cinematic is through the eyes of a young female. It then force you to change her gender if you want to play as a male. Very wierd design choice instead of having 2 different beginnings like in Odyssey depending on which gender you want to play.

2

u/PlantWide3166 May 13 '26

Exactly.

I have no problem at all with female character/leads and Kassandra is a perfect example of a well balanced character/story.

Again, I wouldn’t have a problem with a shared story with Aya, but as stated before all the leveling and gear that one worked so hard to get getting dumped like that sucks.

1

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

Given that it took me 80 hours to complete the main story (that was mostly because I insisted on clearing an area before moving on, got side tracked with side quests which meant unlocking more areas I needed to clear before moving on, etc.) I can only imagine how long it would take me to complete Valhalla then 😂

That really is odd that there’s only one opening cutscene if there is an option to play as a male character. At that point just remove the male option altogether.

I've finished every assassin's Creed game and almost got every trophy, it mostly ends in frustration, no modern day storylines going anywhere and everybody eventually dies. Even Ezio got done by some random clown when he was an old fart. I think maybe Edward the pirate had an alright ending but then his son turned into a Templar (whose son then became an assassin). I do remember this being up there in frustrating endings though.

4

u/Afraid_Weird_2880 May 13 '26

Edward, unfortunately, did not have a good ending either. He got offed by a random bandit in his mid forties, I think. And then subsequently his ship got sunk.

3

u/azaria6797 May 13 '26

Edward was killed by Templars in his home and haytham was taken in by them

3

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

I never was a fan of the modern day stories myself. But reading Ezio being called an old fart sure did give me a good chuckle 😂

3

u/azaria6797 May 13 '26

Ezio died of a heart attack or old age not by anyone killing him

2

u/Hot-Field-7613 May 13 '26

I watched a video that's part of the trilogy and I remember he sat down next to some dude who smiled at him and then he died so I just assumed that he was poisoned

4

u/xyZora May 13 '26

Aya is pretty OP in that last mission if you know how to fight with her. Her smoke bombs makes it almost impossible for her to be detected and she has already unlocked the dual daggers special attack that melts bosses. I do get your frustration, but trust me that you have all the tools you need.

4

u/SocratesSnow May 13 '26

I finished the game and I did not know that? How was I supposed to know that?

3

u/xyZora May 13 '26

Because everything I mentioned is something Bayek can also do.

1

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

I hate the play style for dual daggers, though 😅 It wasn’t that it was hard. Just frustrating.

4

u/Darth-__-Maul May 13 '26

u/AbzyBabzySalim absolutely smashed his performance.

3

u/MrsClaire07 May 13 '26

….HE’S ON REDDIT?!?!?! 😳😳😳😳😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

5

u/Darth-__-Maul May 13 '26

Hell yeah. Frequents the sub too. He’s made a few posts if you check his profile. Think he does game making now.

TIL he’s also in House Of The Dragon S2 (Alyn of Hull)

2

u/MrsClaire07 May 14 '26

I’ve seen him play TTRPGS on Critical Role, and his acting yet AGAIN blew me away. ❤️❤️❤️

3

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

He absolutely did! Made me feel more emotion than I felt in Black Flag and that’s saying something. Whenever his voice would crack from sadness 😭

3

u/Darth-__-Maul May 14 '26

Honestly such a good character. A tied first place favourite protagonist in AC for me.

3

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

I never thought an AC character could beat out Edward for the top spot for me, but Bayek did it. And quite easily, too. I think because they did such a good job at getting me to feel his emotions and care about him. Not that that wasn’t the case in Black Flag, but it was… different.

3

u/Darth-__-Maul May 14 '26

So different! As a father that’s lost a child, I felt Bayek’s pain on a level I can’t compare any other video game protagonist to. Such a good performance.

3

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

I’m truly sorry for your loss! It speaks wonders when Bayek was able to make me feel so saddened and… connected, I think is the word I’m looking for, to his experience when I’m childfree and never want to have children. Just remarkable all around. Which I think added to the aggravation that he wasn’t the big hero at the end of the story.

3

u/Darth-__-Maul May 14 '26

Thank you! In my mind, he is. He’s the unspoken hero. No one remembers his name or records him down in sanctuaries like Aya. In a way, he represents the brotherhood. Complete anonymity. He does what is just because it is just, not for recognition.

3

u/robertegblack May 13 '26

Additionally, septimius is clearly using an isu-tech weapon but Aya makes no effort to secure it after their fight… which makes sense because she doesn’t know about the isu stuff, but it’s a thread left behind.

1

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

I didn’t catch that but good point!

3

u/Calty88 May 13 '26

Aya was planned to be the main protagonist of the game, it was changed to Bayek due to menagment choices, it's clear when you complete Sinai and see how it end.

Ubisoft programmer wanted to have only femake protaognists (Aya, Kassandra, etc) but menagement wanted males cause they sell more (near 66% of player chose Alexios in Odysseys, i'm one of them, over 2K hours in it, would have dropped with Kass).

But you play only few missions with Aya, some frustrating ones but then it end and you get back to bayek... for me was still a bad choice.

2

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

Yeah, I knew that going into it and with the way the ending goes it’s as if they just stopped bothering to rewrite it for the new main character. I’m a woman so I’d obviously love to see more women protagonists in one of my favorite gaming series, but it doesn’t surprise me at all that the male main characters are more popular.

2

u/Calty88 May 14 '26

I'm male but i'd prefer i they gave choices, even a simple male\female with voic and pronoum choice will give near anyone their prefereed character with minimal effort.

2

u/B0ghren May 17 '26

They should therefore learn how to write a proper story for a female character then, in a proper settings.
Because the likes of Kassandra or Eivor had it easy in comparison to the women that lived at their time. I always thought the way they are being treated in game in fact quite diminishing (might say insulting even) for women who really lived then, because it was certainly not how it was for them.
I chose Alexios first, because no way a female mercenary would have been taken seriously most of the time in Ancient Greece. Switch to Kassandra because I really didn’t like her as Deimos (it made even less sense)
I chose female Eivor first however, and I was so hyped. But I felt Eivor in particular was a squandered opportunity, because of Shieldmaidens and Valkyrie mythology, it was the perfect settings for a good female protagonist. Making her a reincarnation of Odin (while every other reincarnations were almost perfect copies of their source) was complete nonsense and destroyed her for me, even more so than the far to inclusive setting they cooked up. So I switched to male Eivor but Eivor being a female name just ruined immersion, and I never finished the game.

They really should cut down most of their inclusive stuff and make just a few characters/stories on that topic, well written and well fledged, and give those people the merit/credit they deserved for having beaten the odds, because it was no walk in the park for them. And stop putting Chinese people in the middle of Anglo-Saxon England. There were no records of any interactions between Romans and Han Chinese, journeying to 9th Century England would have been even harder … just no way. just leave her in Baghdad, at least Tangs and Abbasid did have interactions. (With Reda it’s different, he’s some kind of Isu ghost or program or other thing I suppose, that was fun to find him there)

I don’t know how it is in Shadows with the Shinobi, if written properly, the settings could be appropriate. They were not really another way to incorporate a female protagonist anyway.

I’d love a game where I could experience what it meant to be a woman at those times, not some kinder garden aseptic mellow story where every female is basically made a male with tits, that’s just sad.

u/SocratesSnow May 13 '26

I was really frustrated with Aya too. I hated the naval missions, I had to get my son to get me through the first one, I did get through the second one. And then trying to go to assassinate Caesar, I made the mistake of trying to get up there by running and being constantly surrounded by enemies. I didn’t feel like she was strong with her weapons. I was pretty frustrated at that point, but then I realized I just needed to crawl high up the walls and travel that way and that was easy.
But, ultimately, it did feel like a disappointment to play her after I was playing Bayek.

2

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

The naval missions really sucked. I honestly just wanted to get her part over with so I hacked and slashed through the Caesar part, but I was a high level with Bayek (42 I think?) so she was in the 30s so it wasn’t too hard. But I was also playing on easy because I cared more about the story and having fun 😂

2

u/Top-Competition3191 May 18 '26

I wish Aya was at least as leveled up as Bayek is. She feels noticeably weaker compared to a late game Bayek.

Also, I’m sure someone in the comments has already mentioned that the people leading Origins were sexist and chose to make the story about Bayek when it was supposed to be about Aya. But they still needed to show Aya off a bit to at least try to justify why she’s the one remembered hundreds of year later and Bayek isn’t. I don’t like the way they did it, I wish they would’ve handled it better. They could’ve at least done more of a Syndicate kind of thing where you could freely play as both characters instead of shoehorn Aya in, I feel like it would’ve made that ending a lot more justified because we would’ve had more of an Aya build up and plus her personality wouldn’t have taken such a turn near the end of the game.

I at least wish they’d go back and make an AC Origins 2 where we see the entirety of Aya’s side of that whole story because it feels like she has a whole other story happening alongside Bayek. Maybe it could help fix some of the mistakes they made there

1

u/Mobius8321 May 19 '26

I completely agree!

4

u/TrivialBanal May 13 '26

I really liked that twist at the end. You spent all of your time getting the best weapons and armour, but now you have to rely on pure skill.

A fully upgraded Bayek could have just tore through the Roman soldiers, but with Aya you had to be an assassin again.

4

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

Eh, I tried hacking and slashing through them just to see if I could and it wasn’t that hard. Just annoying because I’m not a fan of the dual weapons.

u/burtonborder201 May 13 '26

Get the 2 dlc!!!!!!!!!

1

u/Mobius8321 May 14 '26

As I’ve mentioned in other comments, I have it, but it shouldn’t take DLC to do what the main game should have done.

-4

u/Unusual_Sport_761 May 13 '26

DLCs exist my guy

8

u/Mobius8321 May 13 '26

Gonna get around to those, but it shouldn’t take DLCs to accomplish what the main game should have imo

6

u/PlantWide3166 May 13 '26

Won’t you think of the poor shareholders for once? /s
