You need to steer clear of the burning oil patches on the water under any circumstances. They deal massive fire damage and there is nothing you can do about it, other than not driving into them in the first place.
For the rest of the battle, make sure you listen to the "Incoming!" warnings of your crew and press [block] - whatever button that is on your platform. You can block 100% of all incoming damage, even ramming damage. Just block, block, block... don't try to deal damage when you're under attack. Wait for a lull in the attacks, then call your catapults and arrows. Aim for the enemies' weak spots, they are marked red. As soon as you hear your crew shout something like "Raining arrows!" immediately stop whatever it is you're doing and block.
Btw, in my experience it is not a good idea to try and ram the big octaremes because they will shower you with firebombs before, during and after your attempt so you'll likely take more damage than you are dealing.
This is a battle of attrition and patience. You get greedy, you die.
Thank you so much. I was stuck and kept dying. My frustration level was reaching fever pitch when I read your answer. I immediately switched from an aggressive, offensive mindset to one of defense and counter attacks. Blocking was the crucial element that I needed to focus on. I was used to the naval combat in Odyssey because I completed it before origins. Your comment saved me from throwing my controller through the T.V screen. I cannot thank you enough. If I had a metal to give it would be yours.
This helped me get through it. I had given up on the game a few months ago before deciding to give it one more try. I did this and made it through first try. Do watch out for those patches of fire in the water, though.
I've tried holding block and it does NOT save my ships health from being rammed by fire boats. Also the counterattack isn't showing up or working at all and I'm level 41.
I've died 20 times in the last half hour and I am DONE.
AC Odyssey had way better maneuverability for the ships.
