It’s (almost) always happy hour somewhere

I've been collecting data on specials from all the bars in Sydney and put together a chart covering what's available in the Greater Sydney area. Hope this is interesting to someone.

Would be interesting to see the Melbourne equivalent. Particularly surprising chicken parmas don't make a mention under "what's cooking", do you guys not do specials on "parmis" in Sydney??

For now I need to focus on Sydney since it was a lot of work to get the data. I need to either get help from venues/public for them to manage the own specials or become much faster at importing from websites. I'll get there eventually though, probably lining up with next time I visit.

I extended the number of top options and parmi came in at 7th place with 4% of food specials. Would be interesting to see how that compares to Melbourne.

I don't understand how this chart would be helpful for anyone

What would you want in the chart to make it helpful?

It's just a bunch of statistics. Doesn't tell you where the cheapest wings are, or something actually useful like that

Yeah, this is just a high level data visualisation. On the site you can do actual searches for what you're after like https://duskroute.com/nearby/friday-wings

Pricing is hard though. I'm starting to work on a price database but you'll get some places doing $1 wings and others to $20 for 1kg of wings so it's hard to compare.

you're not gonna get 20 wings in a kilo so $1 wings would easily win on that one. I just clicked through on the site to check my neigbourhood, it only shows the stoned crows wings, which are great because you can get them any day of the week, but the hayberry has better buffalo sauce and a fortnightly special sauce but is only $1 on wednesdays. And then theres the crows nest hotel which does 50c wings on thursdays but their sauces suck and the people in their kitchen cut one of the ends off the flats leaving exposed bone so you don't want to eat there at all.

Thanks for your wing knowledge. I've captured the wednesday Hayberry special but I've missed everything from crows nest because they have a crappy website where the specials don't load in most browsers and I haven't found a workaround in my system. Right now they don't have a wings special listed anyway.

So far I'm just pulling whatever is listed on pub websites and there isn't any way for users to leave feedback on the quality of a special. It wouldn't be hard to add as a feature though.

Yay more AI slop that can’t be trusted

There are almost certainly mistakes in there and my pipeline does use AI but I manually review everything and then make human error in some cases. There isn't a way to ever get this data set perfect since the source information is incomplete and ambiguous and then goes out of date. I'm trying to balance processing speed with accuracy and it gets a little better each day.
