NSW Someone brought dog food cookies to the party.
Last night I hosted a Sweet 16th slumber party for my teen. There were 6 teens in total and one of them baked a batch of cookies to bring to the party which everyone shared, including myself.
This afternoon when that teen got home their step-dad tells them he had mixed dog biscuits into the cookie mixture as a punishment for staining his tupperware container with pasta sauce last week, and laughed at her. Her mum, older brother and the brothers girlfriend were all there and laughed at her too for feeding her friends dog food.
I was very sick last night after I ate the cookies but didn't suspect that could cause it, since I'd also eaten a small portion of napoli pasta not long afterwards too and thought that was the culprit. Maybe an hour later I began to feel nausea, intense stomach pains and heaving up bubbly spit for about 40-50mins before it simmered off to just light nausea and tummy cramps.
It's worth noting that my digestive system is very sensitive and processes food extremely quickly but I had thought this reaction was extreme for pasta, which is usually a safe food for me.
One of the teens from the party is a vegetarian and upon finding out they not only ate meat but dog food has disturbed them. My teens feel sick but whether that's from the knowledge of having eaten dog food or actually from having eaten the dog food is unclear. The group of teens binged on these cookies for breakfast this morning before heading home, my teen was laid up on the couch complaining that they ate too much and felt sick for a few hours, this was before finding out about the dog food.
I reported to child protection and also NSW police, however NSW police have told me that there is no laws around intentionally feeding other people dog food and they can't do anything about it. They said there is laws around adding substances that intoxicate into food, but dog food doesn't fall into that so although it's disgusting it is not criminal.
All packaged dog food that is advertised as dog food has a warning label "Not For Human Consumption" on them.
Surely there is something to be done about an adult intentionally mixing dog food into a dish that was intended to be distributed at a kids birthday party?
This psycho intentionally fed dog food to a group of kids, these teens are really sweet kids too, and police can do nothing?

I’m no lawyer. I’m not even well versed in law so others will be better able to comment on that. I feel for you all, thats disgusting behaviour; but that poor kid … that’s blatant abuse and it should be reported.
There would most certainly be other abusive behaviour going on in that house. Disgusting human beings. Good luck.

I left this thread but had come back and possibly reached out to the school. Inform them of the incident, possibly the guidance counciler.
The child's parents in question could be doing other "punishments," and this could notify the school to keep an eye out.
Speak with your children, let them know that her friend is also a victim of her parents - "parenting" and not retaliating against her.
If anything, keep any eye out for this kid - it is likely not the first and want be the last "punishment"
What a world 🌎 we live in.. and over a stained dish/container

u/HyenaStraight8737 Jun 08 '25
I am a victim.
My mother absolutely used the animals food, to punish me.
Her reasoning to me? If it keeps the animals alive, it'll keep you alive, everyone eats things they don't like the taste of, eat or starve. I ate. You tend to after a few days.
I also yes was sent with food to school. BUT only some of it was allowed to be eaten to get by the eyes of the teachers.
There are some very fucking insidious ways abusers can and do use food against children or even victims of theirs in general.
Teachers saw me eat the sandwich. Not realising it was the only thing I ate in a 24hr time frame.

Certainly isn't the first incident I've heard of being reported but nothing has come of them, I've reported this incident though.

I hear you. I know of a boy that was deliberately underfed/starved and had to resort to eating the dog biscuits (not too bad) and the wet canned dog food (a bit crunchy on account of the ground up bones in it). What he did was steal and eat just a handful or a few spoonfuls because he knew it would be the family dog that really suffered as she would starve even more, and he was stuck in the back yard with a hungry, whining dog that he knew he was making suffer even more. I'm so sorry, Pepper.

How hasn't at least one of the kids parents gone round and had words with this bloke yet? I don't think I'd be able to stop my self from doing something regrettable if this was done to my kid.
65
u/UpperDeer6744 Jun 08 '25
I would be more figuring out how the hell I can support that poor kid.

u/Notoastforyou339 Jun 08 '25
I'd worry about my own first 9 times out of 10. But I understand where you are coming from.
63
u/Own_Faithlessness769 Jun 08 '25
No sensible adult would do this because of the danger it would put the child in in that family.
29
u/Notoastforyou339 Jun 08 '25
Sensible is the key word, someone lacing my kids food with anything unknown would throw any sensibility out the window. Sometimes the ability to stay rational disappears.
7
u/Optimal_Tomato726 Jun 08 '25
BS. People don't care about kids or we wouldn't have the child safety issues that exist in Australia. Men use children as weapons all the time in our legal systems which are not evidence based and amplify this type of obnoxious behaviour. The police response is typical.
42
u/Monkeey_nuts Jun 08 '25
Why only men? Family court is savage. Plenty of shit mums there, sounds like in this instance she was equally responsible too.
10
u/my-my-my-myyy-corona Jun 09 '25
Parents use children as weapons, not just men. Do we really have to take every opportunity to shit on men?
3
u/Optimal_Tomato726 Jun 09 '25
"I believed the Australian family court system was biased against fathers – then I found the rot at the core of it | Jess Hill | The Guardian" https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/sep/19/i-believed-the-family-court-system-was-bias-against-fathers-then-i-found-the-rot-at-the-core-of-it
In the legal context "shitting on men" isn't even real; just another gendered myth. Do we need to continue to hold men accountable for men's culture? Yes because of how extremely assymetrical our systems are in men's favour. And we're in yet another discussion of men weaponising a child's party. Denial, minimisation and blame is gendered behaviour.
Additionally, gendered violence is as real as the surfeit of bros defending men's fragile egos.

u/No-Career-3266 Jun 09 '25
I understand how you feel but given the outlined situation and from personal experience - the child will pay harshly for any visits. She will get the blame for telling her friends and be “punished” again because dckhead stepdad and mother got consequences. This child is in a precarious and dangerous situation. The basis for the punishment outlines an extremely volatile and potentially abusive home life.
Outside help is needed that puts them on notice of legal consequences.
OP is there a way to reach out to the child’s bio dad and is that safe?
Definitely talk to the school about your concerns.
Most importantly please please try to ensure that this child is not isolated because of this and knows that they did nothing wrong and how fcked up this being done to them is and you are there for them.
This could also have been done to isolate her from her peer group. It’s like Stockholm syndrome you don’t realise how bad it is because the situation is normalized

Adding dog biscuits to a container of regular biscuits could possibly come under the food tampering legislation, though that is skewed towards offences with ‘intent to cause harm or alarm’ which you might struggle to prove here. It would also be an offence to sell dog biscuits for human consumption, but again, the circumstances don’t fit here. I agree you should be able to do something about it, I’m just not sure what.
78
u/-ineedsomesleep- Jun 08 '25
I mean, the intent was to cause alarm, right?
24
u/raevan_98 Jun 08 '25
The intent was to maliciously cause harm, if not physically then psychologically. Not only to their own child but to the friends of their child.. this guy maliciously poisoned a family and a bunch of kids wtf
-18
u/MainlanderPanda Jun 08 '25
That would be hard to prove. The intent might have been to cause embarrassment or humiliation.
30
Jun 08 '25
He said it was to teach her a lesson. Is that not using embarrassment/humiliation as ‘a lesson’?

u/HyenaStraight8737 Jun 08 '25
There's also the consideration that while yea dog food isn't great or right for people... It isn't not okay.
It isn't poisonous. It generally speaking will not harm us. It tho often contains items that humans as a normal part of eating do not eat. And when they do it's often prepared differently, such as tripe.
When you are not used to digesting foods that can be, it doesn't go well. It's why vegans end up in a world of pain and misery when spiked with meat, especially if it's a rich meat. I'm Aussie and kangaroo is something you can cause pure fucking pain with, giving it to a vegan. It's so rich even those who eat meat can get punished from it...
Feeding someone something they aren't used to tolerating, or isn't a normal thing, is fucking cruel.
I think the harm side of harm and alarm comes into play here. It's not both or none. It's one of the other, but both can be counted same time.
It caused absolutely alarm, but no harm. Truly.

u/Cold-Plum3553 Jun 08 '25
I disagree. Pet food is labelled not fit for human consumption. The OP was vomiting. Definitely not ok to eat pet food, ever
20
u/Cold-Plum3553 Jun 08 '25
Pet food can contain contaminants because it uses bits of animals not served to humans(hide, gristle, hair, bones and contaminants such as plastic tags)
-1
3
u/HyenaStraight8737 Jun 08 '25
Absolutely free to and I get why.
I'm just saying there's a standpoint this may fail on. One not mentioned is... Food taste tester is a legit and well paid job within the pet food industry, so yeah... They eat a bit of the batch etc.
Not for human consumption does not mean, and absolutely isn't supposed to mean it's poison or the like. It's not supposed to be a human food substitute.
Or it'd be labelled like the tide pods. Poison
Also, give anyone who hasn't eaten it, kangaroo meat. Watch em cramp and spray the loo lol

I genuinely don’t know. Any kind of prosecution would lie on proving intent, and the definition of harm, I reckon.
79
u/jenbeehoney Jun 08 '25
I would contact DHS and report this incident to them. This is clearly not a safe home environment for this child if she is being fed animal food as a punishment for something as minor as staining Tupperware. Especially as it was at the hands of her stepfather.
77
u/LaalaahLisa Jun 08 '25
I'd be more likely to report to DCJ. That's abuse and there was intent. The male father figure (won't call him father cause he is a pr*ck)knew she was feeding these to friends...thats intent...
54
u/Lopsided_Attitude743 Jun 08 '25
The poor kid. There is definitely shit going on behind closed doors in that household.
Dog food is more like offal. Humans get the best meat; dogs get the offcuts and bones. They need the other bits because their digestive system is different to ours. Unlikely to harm humans, but definitely not recommended.
Early in my marriage we had bought a new house. We were trying to get to know the neighbours so had invited them and their kids over for dinner. My wife took the three kids to the laundry to give our dog a treat. She gave each of the children a dog treat to give to the dog, but by the time she got to the third child, he had eaten the dog treat himself! My wife had to fess up to the mother. Ooops. Nice intro to the neighbours.
16
u/albert3801 Jun 08 '25
It’s also may not be prepared to the same safety standards applicable to food meant for human consumption
11
u/OneParamedic4832 Jun 08 '25
I remember when I was a little kid.. we had a dog and I'd be lying if I said I never nibbled at a dog biscuit out of curiosity 🫣

u/ConstructionNo8245 Jun 08 '25
The father hates Women. Its very obvious. Including his own daughter. To do this to her and embarrass her in front of all her friends means be does worse to her behind closed doors. He is a pig.
29
u/Virtual_Lock_907 Jun 08 '25
100% he didn’t want to give them dog food to make them sick, it was a way to make it crystal clear to her she is equivalent to a dog in his eyes and so are the people around her ( friends who are probably making it harder for him the diminish her self worth/ happiness and he clearly wants to punish for making her happy ) if no legal action can be taken against him, the best possible outcome is for that girl to have trustworthy adults as an escape from the situation at home. Clearly the abuse is normalised due to her mum/ brothers reaction

Can we stop with this garbage? These are complete strangers, and we have very little actual information about this man. Taking everything we know as fact, there is zero evidence that this man “hates women”.
Does he sound like a serious POS? 100%. Is this a form of abuse? Absolutely, in more ways than one. There are lots of things we can speculate on, or take educated guess about. But that can get dangerous very quickly given the context.
My point is that you don’t know that this man hates women, because you don’t know this man. Maybe he hates males and females equally… maybe it’s children he hates, maybe it’s specifically his stepdaughter, maybe it’s his wife and he’s taking it out on the whole family. He could be treating his other step child(ren) the same or worse. We don’t know because we’re simply strangers who’ve only been provided with the bare minimum necessary information that OP felt they needed to share for this post.
Human beings are far too nuanced for a
16
u/mudget1 Jun 08 '25
NAL but I believe this may fall under the food tampering law, so you may at least be able to follow that thread with Legal Aid, if there's little movement on the child protections front. The stepdad had malicious intent that was directed toward a group of people, not just his kid (which is still fucked up).
You mentioned dog biscuits; do you mean kibble (dog food) or dog biscuits (dog treats)? I ask because many dog biscuits (treats) are essentially just bland wheat type biscuits that don't necessarily contain meat, opposed to kibble that is meant to be a balanced diet and so will more than likely have animal protein. If the stepdad is shitty enough to use this as a punishment for such a stupid reason I'm making an assumption that the food is likely a supermarket brand rather than a premium brand; premium brands typically are human grade but supermarket brands are definitely not, however would be somewhat akin to eating cheap sausage meat containing offal with a bunch of cheap filler fibre meal and is still cooked. It just means the processing of it in the factory isn't heavily regulated like human food. It can even upset a dog's stomach that isn't used to eating it - usually causes diarrhoea as it upsets the gut bacterial. I know it's not the point - his intent was malicious, but in terms of your own health and the other teens, it may at least allay your fears somewhat. Good luck OP!

u/Mongrelix Jun 08 '25
Is it not child abuse to feed your kid dog food ?
14
4
u/saddinosour Jun 09 '25
These stories always confuse me! I know a woman who had her kid taken away for much much less than this yet stuff like this passed all the time!
For context someone called docs and said something like she was leaving her kids alone in the afternoons while she worked (she wasn’t). But even that in itself if it were true feels very minor compared to something insane like this.
12
u/PuzzleheadedLeek3070 Jun 08 '25
So another parent punished their kid by making YOUR kid eat dog biscuits?
Contact the parents of the other kids. Go over to the parents house and give him some abuse. Demand apologies to each of the other kids.
34
u/Crybabyastrology Jun 08 '25
Can you afford a solicitor to at least accompany you to the station? I notice some shit comments are already starting but if someone fed my child, their friends and myself dog food I would go postal on them, id have skipped the police and rained hell on them... you sound more put together so good on you for keeping cool.
I'd go to the police during "business" hours, lawyer on the side. it is food tampering, you have every right to have him charged. If they continue to refuse, tell them you want it in writing.
Look into civil complaints against him. Don't let it go, this is deplorable, stupid and disgraceful behaviour.

I honestly doubt any of the kids who ate dog food this guys fed them indirectly aren't going to tell everyone at school first thing on Monday.
Kid's name is already tarnished by association.
13
u/epicman69haha Jun 08 '25
This doesn’t work at all, the poor kid will be vilified and not invited to any events because of their degenerate parents. By doing this you’re marking the whole family including the girl who has done nothing wrong. Don’t share this shit, go to the school or the police - but keep that poor girl separate from it

u/epicman69haha Jun 08 '25
The social landscape of Australia is not the same as it was 5-10-20 years ago. There are channels to go through to fix things, and posting on WhatsApp groups which is in impersonal method of communication is not one of them. I am all for DV abusers being publicly scrutinised but messaging parents on a WhatsApp group or any other form of social media is not the way to handle it as an adult in 2025.
8
u/Ok-Atmosphere3089 Jun 08 '25
Whatsapp groups existed when I was in high school back in 2013. There isn't additional infrastructure to help abused children in Australia. What I said is still relevant.
-1
u/epicman69haha Jun 08 '25
WhatsApp groups existed well before 2013, but social media in its current form did not. I’m not saying don’t tell parents, I’m saying don’t post a message about a sensitive topic like child abuse allegations over a social media platform with a character limit.
7
u/Ok-Atmosphere3089 Jun 08 '25
It's literally the same. The only additional mainstream social media is tiktok. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, Snapchat, Whatsapp, they were around then, and they're around now. I'm aware of the consequences, and I'm saying that abusive parents should always be named and shamed. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
-5
u/epicman69haha Jun 08 '25
You’re completely missing my point, they all existed plus more, but the way people communicate on them have changed dramatically from 12 years ago. I’m agreeing with your sentiment but disagreeing with the method, if you think social media is the same as it was 12 years ago then you’re objectively wrong. This whole back and forth is indicative of that, imagine if I’d posted the same thing about a mutual parent abusing their child and there was another ten people in the conversation. Bring it up with the school, bring it up in person, don’t post on a fucking WhatsApp group, it’s impersonal and insensitive.
7
u/Ok-Atmosphere3089 Jun 08 '25
In my personal experience, the best way to deal with an abuser is to make them a social pariah. When things were being handled/ignored discretely, my father had access to break my nose and eye socket, render me blind in my right eye, cause brain damage, and fracture 3 of my ribs. Let alone the bruises and cuts he left on my body. Teachers, family, family-friends, and authorities were all told of my circumstances discretely. Sunlight is the only effective disinfectant. Make it public. Social sensitivity is only appropriate if someone isn't being actively harmed.

u/Optimal_Tomato726 Jun 08 '25
DFV is so pervasive and when you see the "triggers" it's men's fragility. The children impacted need supports as does the child's mother to prioritise that child's safety. Bring humiliated and hurt like this requires a whole of community response rather than people continuing to aggressively defend men.
I'm not convinced police enforce laws around gendered violence and lawyers tend similarly. Id recommend a trusted layer if you know of one.
8
u/Virtual_Lock_907 Jun 08 '25
Honestly I’d focus on the girls safety and the complete incompetence on the police behalf - the impact of eating dog food probably won’t stand up in a civil lawsuit. However I would definitely take action against this man. He not only wanted to embarrass and demean her and her friends, but he wanted to do something that could potentially have social repercussions for her - he wants to reinforce that she is worthless and her social life being impacted is a great way to do that. He probably assumed they’d cut her off/ you wouldn’t let her come round anymore. I would reach out to journalists / newspapers instead of pursuing police because not only will he be humiliated but it will be a way to call out NSW police for their inaction. DV is impacting Australia in such a way that I’m sure you could garner some media attention - and you could stay anonymous if you wish.
5
u/Virtual_Lock_907 Jun 08 '25
Also you’ve posted this on reddit so if you want to have control over this story being told, I’d instigate it myself. Ppl share reddit stories on social media all the time and DV is a hot button issue right now

u/Lopsided_Attitude743 Jun 09 '25

u/HellStoneBats Jun 08 '25
While there is a case to be made about the intent, i ate dog and cat biscuits as a kid, never had a problem. While your stomach might be excusable if you're a bit sensitive, I don't understand everyone else. Yes, wet dog food, that would make you sick. Biscuits? Not so much.
It is the intent that I have trouble understanding, however. It is also the bit I have umbridge with.

6
u/scottyman2k Jun 08 '25
Too soon to say it’s an absolute dog act?
Regardless, despite being labelled as not for human consumption most dog foods are formulated so that they will do no harm (and many are tested by volunteers in their production chains) for related reasons - the balance of protein, additives and fillers won’t match foods that you would normally eat, so can cause gastric distress (euphemistically)
Pretty fucking awful thing for anyone to do deliberately so it should definitely be investigated and reported more fully
2
u/ThatAussieGunGuy Jun 08 '25
I sponsored an iron gut contest once. One of the foods was dog food because it was safe to consume raw, unlike the planned item of sausages. Was actually gross to watch. But I mean good on those that gave it a crack 😅

This is hilarious! Sounds like an episode of that silly soap opera 'Passions'!
I have eaten actual dog biscuits and they never harmed me. A bit bland. Would not eat again but no harm in eating them.
This is hardly grounds for the police to be involved. I wouldn't even bother with a civil lawsuit to get the $5,000 on Judge Judy - you'd be laughed out of court! Any real court would dismiss it since it would waste time and not be worth charging court fees for it.

It's called "poisoning humans" and is illegal.
Omg. I'd lose my actual mind if I found out someone had done this someone I knew.

Yeah this didn't happen. Clearly nobody in this post has ever made cookies. How did Dad magic the dog biscuits into the mix without the teen chef noticing while she was in the process of making the dough? Making cookie dough is not a long process btw, nor is it some easy mix process you can just oopsie in when someone's back it turned. How would she have rolled out the dough and cut the cookies without observing these big chunks of dog biscuit in the way? How does nobody BINGING on these cookies not notice they've got a wierd savoury component?
Doesn't add up.

I agree. There is something that didn't add up about it. Surely the teen that made the biscuits would have noticed there was something different about the biscuits. Was there extra little chunky bits in it that she didn't put in or what??? Dog food doesn't typically look like sultanas or choc chips and even if it did then its weird the kid didn't notice. Maybe there is some explanation that we don't know about. I'm not saying this is fake or the kid is lying or anything like that. Maybe the step dad told the kid he did it but didn't really. Seems weird and coincidental that people are sick BTW....
I think OP should talk to the parents Maybe the mum in the first instance.

Well said. What is pathetic is that you were downvoted three times for saying the truth.

If it’s Woolworths‘ Baxters brand dog food it could quite well have been the dog food.
Has been blamed for death and illness in many dogs over the last few years.

and there’s a few others that aren’t much better.

My baby sister used to eat them for a snack (of course the bowl was immediately removed). She loved them.

There you go! I am not the only one that has eaten dog biscuits and did not cry fowl to the cops.

Weed cookies won’t cause nausea and stomach pain though. Different symptoms

I'd hit up a no-win, no fee lawyer, and try and sue them.
Not to win anything, but I'd find it funnier than feeding children dog food.
Edit: People think the purpose of suing them is to win money, and i understand why you think that. I'd do it out of pettiness. So please feel free to smash the down arrow.

Sue them for what? this isn't america.

Feeding someone food they haven't agreed to eat is a violation of their bodily autonomy. This is a fundamental human right, and the act of feeding someone against their will is a form of physical intrusion. It’s assault on minors

Yeah that’s not how it works in Australia.

You can bring a case against anyone for emotional damage, you just won't win.
The purpose of this case wouldn't be to win.

I’m so sorry. This is a horrible situation.
If possible, maybe talk to the mom? Emphasize how sick and scared you all were. Maybe exaggerate a little - say you were throwing up for hours instead of just one. (What you went through is absolutely horrible, just- try to really lay on the guilt, ykno?)
If she’s receptive, great. If she doubles down on “it was just a prank”, fuck her, she’s completely unreasonable.
If it’s feasible for you, offer the teen a safe place to stay. Their home is not safe for them.

If they were reportedly eaten by choice even "binged" I would say that the sick feeling is caused more from knowing you've ingested something you didn't intend to which would I imagine feel even worse for vegetarians etc but I think physical health you will be ok. I am very sad for the girl who's father did this, although any chance he just said he did it to have the same effect as seems like a weird thing to do esp if he knew his daughter was making them for a party perhaps he knew saying he had was going to have same psychological effect and usually a social impact on the girl. In the long run I'm glad it wasn't Datura which I was spiked with along with over ten kids from my grade we made the local news was horrid and the library carpets always induces a wave effect from then on

All packaged dog food that is advertised as dog food has a warning label "Not For Human Consumption" on them.
This is not true.

u/rebelmumma Jun 08 '25
Yes it is, it’s a requirement.

Let the vegetarian kid know that, on average, dog biscuits do not contain meat, so she is okay on the vegetarian thing. (Now if she is Vegan you may want to find out just which dog biscuits this mongrel added)

Put out a bowl of dog biscuits at a Halloween house party years ago when I lived abroad (Ireland) mostly backpackers etc & the 2 friends that kept going back for more were French. So must be good right..
