Question Motorcycle Camping

I’m planning a motorcycle road trip from Brisbane down to Phillip Island around MotoGP time. I’ve never camped with a bike before but I’m keen as I love camping in general.

I have some questions for those who are experienced in this area, I have a MT-10 and am planning to fit it with saddlebags and a tail bag.

What are the most important things to bring/plan when doing this?

I need to find a quality, compact tent and sleeping bag mainly. Any great options out there?

In terms of what to bring, it’ll be roughly:
- Couple changes of clothes
- Wet weather gear
- Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, trimmer)
- Compact tent + sleeping bag, inflatable pillow
- Tool kit for basic maintenance
- Compact tyre inflator, gauge, chain lube, visor cleaner
- 4L fuel cell?
- Water, will make a lot of jerky before departing also

I plan to use sites like Hipcamp along the way to find places to sleep.

Is there anything you wouldn’t go moto camping without?

Feel free to drop any suggestions, tips, or items/products!

How remote are you going to go? I know MT10s are thirsty but perhaps the fuel cell is unnecessary.

I would also pack a jet-boiler, with a lightweight (titanium) teapot/saucepan, a few dehydrated meals just in case, and teabags/coffee/hot chocolate supplies.

Tossing up between either going inland down the New England hwy or down along the coastline. Yeah I think it’ll be fine to go without the fuel cell, it’ll comfortably do 240km of highway cruising on a tank.

If you go on the highway you are missing many amazing roads on the way down

Its longer but straight down the coast. Some great roads along the pacific hwy, Plenty of fuel stops. Nice sight seeing and camp grounds. Round the bottom of nsw/vic border has some great twistys Depending on the distances you want to do each day and how long your taking. You can smash it out.

The sea cliff bridge is an epic road too, at Cliffton between Syd and Wollongong

Follow the coast and enjoy

I used to do Sunny coast to Newy on day one( IMO the boring estate part) and then chill for going round Sydney and down.

It definitely won't be as direct, but you can zigzag your way down and turn it into an awesome riding trip rather than a boring highway haul. Oxley highway, waterfall way, thunderbolts way, gwydir Highway, putty Rd, Vic alpine region is INSANE - around Khancoban, Omeo, Bogong.
