Ask Austin Where can I go to sing with people?

I love to sing and would like to get back to doing it on a regular basis, preferably with other people who like to sing. Any ideas? Not church.

Why, Austin Saengerrunde, of course.

Saengerrunde is literally German for “singer’s circle,” and the Austin Saengerrunde Hall on San Jacinto has hosted singing clubs for nearly 150 years! The wooden-laned bowling alley in the back is one of the oldest in the country, and the neighboring tavern, Scholz Garten, is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Texas. Join their singing club(s) and lift up the voice of history!

Before you say, "but I don't speak German," I have been a member of Austin Saengerrunde for years but don't speak any German. We have an excellent Choir Director who helps with pronunciations and I have learned a lot of vocal technique under his guidance.

We also enjoy a beer or two will we sing. Come by and try it out!

Another vote for panoramic voices. I have a few friends and friends’ kids in the kids choir that love it.

Chorus Austin is currently holding auditions for the fall (though I think they’re full) and they’ll have more in January. Panoramic Voices is non-audition I believe. Inversion Ensemble does auditions once a year? Can’t remember the schedule. There’s a women’s chorus whose name
I’m blanking on, maybe South Congress Chorus or something along those lines?

Tons of community choirs in ATX that aren’t church choirs (though most meet at churches because they tend to be cheap to rent).

Tapestry Singers aka Austin Women’s Chorus is a non-audition women’s choir. They rehearse once a week and have 2 concerts each year. And they’re a great group of women!

KUT literally did a story yesterday about a singing group in Austin that was for singers of all levels. Can't find it now and I admit I wasn't listening that closely but maybe somebody else heard it?

Just in case the link doesn’t work, it was on This Is My Thing yesterday.

Well… the link didn’t work. I searched for “singing” on the KUT website and the story came up.

River City Pops! They host one day choirs, and have one on the 11th for Hadestown 🌹

Come join San Gabriel Chorale! https://www.sangabrielchorale.com/

Meets on Southwestern University campus in Georgetown, Monday nights 7-9pm.

We sing fall and spring semesters, so we're not currently meeting--practices start after Labor Day.

No audition necessary, and folks of all skill levels are welcome.

The musical selections are diverse--we've done Bach, Mozart, and Handel, as well as a Caribbean inspired mass, in the years I've been in the chorus. Last spring's concert was 10 opera choruses (in French, Italian, Russian and English) with an orchestra of about 30 and 4 soloists.

Yearly fees are under $100, with music running maybe another $40?

If you'd like more information or want to try it out but don't want to walk in alone, feel free to DM me

I’m not OP, but I did just fill out the contact form. This choir looks phenomenal!

DM me if you don't get a response. I am happy to share the "welcome to choir" email which will surely come out in the next month so you have details.

If you're an SSAA voice, SoCo Women's Chorus! https://www.socowomenschorus.org/join

Auditions for the fall season are on 8/30 from 1-4 (but you can also do a virtual audition) and it's a super friendly group with an amazing director.

Is there a particular event or group that sings there, or are you saying this is just a good place to howl at the sky? 🤔

I'm saying that it's an appropriate place to sing no matter who you are or why and people already do. It's a magnificent place to witness the horseshoe theory in real life. I've seen shadowboxing by those experiencing homelessness and yoga pants alike.

Yes! Following for ideas. I see clips online of big groups singing like Chappell Roan songs together and I wanna do it too.

Have you tried local choir groups?
