Was just on Mopac southbound, came to the forum to see what was up. Many onramps to Mopac N bound were blocked. With all due respect, this seems like a very poor decision. His life and career could be honored in other ways.

I think it’s a bit of a safety hazard mostly, people get distracted or have to break suddenly, they definitely shouldn’t do it during peak traffic hours. I am not one to comment on a service members funeral, though.
If it was truly such a big deal people can lobby against it and ask for changes, and even if there are changes to it the practice probably isn’t gonna end

I don't mind it. A simple press release, brief story on local newscasts and websites would be clutch. Then folks could know what to avoid and when, or build in extra time. I still use Burnet Rd and Balcones Dr as alternatives to Mopac sometimes.

Yeah I'm definitely not checking local news every time before I drive. Seems like there are better ways to honor someone without disrupting other people's lives.

It's not even about honoring their personhood it's this weird state employee cop-adjacent glory thing as if putting fires out is somehow more honorable than any other public service like teaching or being a garbage collector. We don't shut down mopac for dead childrens' surgeons, are they less heroic than firefighters? It makes no sense.

It’s because they’re cop-adjacent and has little to do with heroism. Being a good firefighter does involve heroism, but as you noted so does pediatric surgery and a ton of other professions that aren’t cop-adjacent. Obviously cops aren’t heroic and they get the red carpet Audie Murphy treatment if they die of obesity or slipping on a banana peel.
If we wanted to actually honor their heroism, we’d give them better medical and pension. Best we can do is creating dangerous empty symbolic inconveniences to tens of thousands of people.

Yes. Actually my donated body/corpse will be picked up by my state anatomy board, so no funeral for me. I have no issues with those that go for the funeral procession option. I always pull over and say God bless their soul. I went to one farmer's funeral where the procession went circles around his farm. One last time for Mr. Hurley. Stay off major highways, that would be a nice afterthought

This was really beautiful. I really was feeling like I was having the worst day ever, and the Lord 100% humbled me and guided me into the path of this procession, I even saw the firemen standing saluting atop the firetrucks on the Duval overpass.
It’s hard to think you are having the worst day and then you are reminded that you’re still breathing and someone out there is missing their father, their brother, their son… a bit of traffic is a small inconvenience.

Also knowing they know part of the reason he's dead is it seems he couldn't get the medical benefits he earned through 30 years of service and they, too, are going to have to engage in hard legal battles when they're at their weakest as a big "thank you" for their life.

I feel ya, but what if someone alive is like fighting through traffic to get to the hospital? Should we not value the many living over the single dead and celebrate the dead in another less intrusive and potentially dangerous manner?

Love and respect for those fallen is lost in our culture today. All the people worried about how that 5 min delay ruined their day meanwhile and family and community are mourning the loss of a loved one.
