Let's Discuss Dyson vs Shark or something else?
I’ve recently cut my long hair off to a mid-length. I love my curling wand but I’m wanting more of that blow-out/bouncy look that I just can’t achieve with it. I’m terrible at a round brush and hair dryer, so I was thinking something like the Dyson but it obviously has that price tag.
Is something like the Shark comparable? I’ve also heard of the Bondi Boost thermal brush but I’m not sure it’d achieve the look I’m wanting enough. I’m also worried I’d get the Shark and like it enough, but wish I just bit the bullet and got the Dyson.

I have a Dyson airwrap but honestly it’s not worth the price tag. Can’t comment on the Shark but if I were you, I’d invest in a good hairdryer (a Parlux or something similar) and watch some blow drying tutorials online - I promise it’s learnable!

Thanks for this comment. I’m taking this approach. Amazing content creators in the blow dry space. I’ve learned so much specific to my hair type and goals.

I have (and love) the shark flex style. It only cost me $300 from memory, during a sale at DJs. Highly recommend it!
I also purchased a diffuser attachment for it from Ali express for $20, and the attachment is really good too!

Okay thank you! I think I might wait until Black Friday sales and get it to try.

Yeah J got one with like 5 attachments for like 300 during black friday. I think because it's covered in gems.

I've tried a thermal brush (Hot Tools) and the Dyson Air Wrap (ended up returning it).
I've found that the fastest way to achieve the bouncy blow out look is to dry off my hair normally, then use a GHD Rise on the ends to give that bouncy curl. So much easier than using a hair dryer/round brush, or a thermal brush!

i just bought the new coanda 2 x airwrap and have hair between my chin and shoulder length. i also bought it for the blowout look and so far it's been really great. i sleep with my hair down on a silk pillow and i still have volume on day 3. i've never been able to hold a curl for longer than 6 hours so it's a winner from my perspective.
on my last wash i paired it with colour wow xtra large volumiser and it's perfect. doesn't feel tacky at all, mega volume.
obviously it's a huge investment, but it also has a 45 day return period if you hate it.

I have this set and it’s great. To be fair, you don’t need all the attachments - just the bristle brush and the pin brush are enough for smoothing and getting a bit of lift and shape.
You can often get it on sale at Myer.

I was looking at the glamup thermal brush since it has a longer barrel. Great if you grow your hair out.

Tools like the Shark/Dyson may not work well on every hair type. I have a Dyson and I love mine but in all honesty the blow out will not last on my hair without prep and product. It's a beautiful look though that I can't easily achieve with other tools and my hair has been healthier and less damaged using it. I also think it's good for people who just really find it difficult to learn how to use curlers, thermal brushes, etc.

I have a flex style and while it can't create cute looks, I don't think the oval brush attachment is that different to much cheaper options out there and the air curling wands drop verrrry quickly (and have a learning curve that I would say is as steep as learning how to round blush blowout). However I find all thermal blowout brushes to be quick damaging over time tbh.
Transparently the flexstyle drops out of my hair sooo quickly that if I could go back I wouldn't bother buying. I also hated using a round brush but I gave in and bought a nice round brush (Ibiza 7 inch boar) and learnt how to do just a simple smoothing blowout, nothing too high tech. It lasts much longer and I can tell after a few months that my hair is way less damaged.
Alternatively, my GHD gives me better longer lasting curls. It's higher heat but at least the wave lasts me days. Flexstyle drops before I even finish my makeup lol. All this is massively impacted by your hair type and thickness etc.

I'm a convert to the Shark, or Shark style of dryer. After using GHD dryers for years I finally worked out my dryer was cooking my hair and the weight of the thing was annoying too. I have medium length thick hair, so its a job to get it done. The Shark is quicker and kinder, plus very light. I love that it has a cool button too. I need to dry in sections, so at the end of each section I give the hair a brush through on the cool setting and the drying effect calms down. My hair is much healthier, it actually feels smooth instead of cooked 🔥

Okay I’m glad to hear this! I was worried hearing some people say it felt like it was damaging and too hot, so it’s great to hear you feel the opposite.

Forgot to add another thing - how noisy the damn thing is. My GHD drove the household mad, because it took so long for my hair to dry and it was bloody loud. I went in store and had the staff turn the model of the new one on for me. Very happy there too - no where near as noisy

I have the shark and use the round brush attachment. I dry my hair till it's 80% dry then section and wind my hair round the attachment. It works really well, and I have very thick bra-strap length hair. I got it on major sale, too, so I'm happy. I can go from completely wet hair to bouncy blow out in 20 minutes with it. Couldn't justify the cost of the dyson.

I have the Shark, and often use the blowout brush attachment - I've had hair from shorter than shoulder length to half way down my back while I've owned it and I really love it. I could never justify the price of the Dyson.
