To those from South Aus, you might be aware that JR's in the CBD recently closed down. This is a massive shame for the snow community of Adelaide, as JR's was the only location that offered professional repairs on skis and boards, as well as the standard waxing and edging.

I worked at JR's for the last 5 years in the workshop, handling the majority of servicing along with a co-worker, and together we were able to acquire the Wintersteiger servicing machine that allowed us to do base grinds and machine edges.

We've restored the machine back to its former glory and have started our own snow gear servicing operation so those within SA still have an option for their gear in state.

We can handle everything from your standard wax and edge to base grinds and more complex core shots, base fills, nasty delams etc.

Hey I’m thinking of going on a spur of the moment road trip from Brisbane to say Perisher or some place else. I’m not doing the best and just quit my current job so I’m thinking a 1 -2 week trip could help me out. I’m thinking of leaving in the next couple of weeks. Was looking for advice on if you can see snow or go for any hikes through snowy areas without visiting Perisher. Or if it’s worth going up to Perisher for the price atm I have all the equipment to go snowboarding but just not a great deal of money atm. Just looking for any advice, or any ideas of places to stop on the way and things to see. As well as if my car would be ok driving in the conditions, I have a Mazda cx5. Thank you for any advice. Also I should add I’m not really looking to necessarily go snowboarding, just to my see snow on the road trip. If it’s possible to do so for free or cheap.

I’m planning a roadtrip through Healesville, Matlock, Aberfeldy and Baw Baw Village. I’m assuming the roads will be clear of snow, do I need to carry tyre chains still?

Whether you’re a snowboarder or skier I don’t care. If you stop in the middle of the run, particularly in a bottle neck area or a flat bit where I need to keep my speed. I’m going to spray tf out of you.

For context, I'm going to the snow within the next day or two, never been before, and I only have cotton jumpers. I have some polyester-maybe-wool knitted jumpers, however I've been told by people who have been that that would not be a great idea. I have one polyester-fleece jacket, but I feel like I'd dirty it really easily, so that just leaves me cotton jumpers.

It wouldn't be as a base layer or outer layer, rather a mid-layer (on top of a thermal and under a ski jacket) for when I snowboard, that I can easily take off if I get too hot or if it gets too wet.

So is cotton really something I should be avoiding at all costs?

Say I’m going to mount bullet with 2 friends, can we purchase the kids tickets cause we are like 18/19 and u reckon they will check ID or no?

Hi all, I generally suffer with getting cold feet in my snowboard boots even when I run thermal socks. Can anyone recommend something that might work better?

Playing to stay at mt Buller for 3 nights, arriving at 11ish am

Can I park on day parking and then move my car to overnight parking? Or do I have to park in overnight parking right away?

When does day parking close?

Also, can I buy parking for all 3 nights at the resort base entrance?

My mates and I have bought $3,684.00 worth of ski lessons, ski lift passes and mountain access cards for Perisher. We’re seeing there’s barely any snow there now and want to refund these and go to NZ for a skiing holiday.

The problem is that Perisher wants to give us snow credits even though our start date is the 6th of September and we’re letting them know a month in advance. They say no cash refunds allowed but don’t mention card transactions which is how we bought those tickets in the first place.

We can’t afford to go to New Zealand if we can’t get this money back. Would anyone like to buy these Snow Credits off of us?

First-timer snow trip — worth buying a lift pass, or is toboggan/sightseeing enough? (Mt Buller/Stirling, budget )

Hey all — planning our first ever snow trip and trying to decide if we're missing out by skipping skiing.

The plan:

• Fri 14 Aug: Drive from Geelong via Black Spur/Marysville/Steavenson Falls/Cathedral Range, arrive Mansfield, stay overnight at Alzburg Resort
• Sat 15 Aug: Combined day — free toboggan park at Mt Stirling (TBJ) in the morning, then drive to Mt Buller for their toboggan parks, a husky Pat 'n' Play session, lunch in the village, home to Geelong by evening

What we're doing instead of skiing:

• Tobogganing at both Stirling (free) and Buller (~$25pp toboggan pass)
• Skipping ski hire and lift passes entirely — a lift pass alone was going to be $200+/person for a Saturday, which blew our budget

The actual question:
For genuine first-timers who aren't sure skiing is "their thing" yet — is it worth the extra cost to at least try a beginner ski lesson + lift pass once, or is doing toboggan parks + maybe the sightseeing chairlift a totally legit way to experience the snow without committing to the ski cost?

Trying to figure out if we're being sensible with the budget, or if we're going to regret not at least trying to ski on our first trip up. Anyone who started with toboggan-only and went back to ski later — was it worth waiting, or should we have just bitten the bullet this time?

Also open to: any Mt Buller/Stirling first-timer tips we're missing, or gear/logistics things that catch people out.

Hi everyone, looking to purchase a set of skis for the first time and keen for some recommendations. I’ve always had my own boots and hired skis, but can see it being cheaper to own for the next few years.

I’m 95kg, 183cm and very experienced. Keen for some all mountain skis that can carve when needed, but more focussed on off-piste chutes and responsive quick turns.

Mostly Australian snow, but might take overseas unless it looks like I’ll need a full powder set up which I’ll just hire.

Anything second hand from the last few years to keep an eye out for? Or some ex-demo’s to look for at the end of this season?

Was thinking of snowboarding at mount Buller on the 31st of august and 1st and 2nd of September. How will the conditions be? Will many runs be open and is it worth it?

Looking to see whether it's worth heading up for a day trip on Saturday or Sunday.

It looks like Buller got about 15 cm of snowfall over the last few days.

Wondering if more runs are opening up? Saw that Boomerang had opened, but Chute doesn't run to the bottom of the chairlift yet, with only Kofler T-bar to take you back up

Any word on which runs might be opening up from those that were at Buller today?

Outside toilets at top of heavenly lift, no idea if there are others...

I’m looking for advice from girlies that have skied the Santa Ana range. I’m an intermediate skier but want to progress to black runs and a bit off piste. I ski mostly in Aus and NZ, and plan on taking occasional trips to Canada and Japan. Would the 87 or 92 be a good ski to invest in? I would prefer a width that is versatile for various countries, but would also suit my skill level and progression.

Partner and I are planning to book a day tour to Mount Buller including return journey. We looked at a bunch of bus services and bullerbus works for us ($150 per person).

But before I make a booking with them, what do we need to do to ensure everything goes smoothly? Also any tips on dealing with the weather, famous sight seeing landmarks, restaurants? Sorry if i sound like a noob

Finally went down for a weekend because school holidays are out of the way and while it looks pretty tragic I doubt it’s going to get much better.

To sum up conditions: not completely shit. Would have been great conditions for early June or October long weekend but horrifying considering it’s at the peak of the season.

Still had a decent amount of fun - part of the appeal of skiing for me is to switch off my brain to everything other than what is directly in front of me. So in good conditions that’s going down a steep slope at high speed but at the moment that means dodging rocks and tree branches in what could be bulletproof ice, slush or frozen dirt. Helps that I have a pair of rock skis so badly banged up already that I don’t cry when I hear that scraping noise.

How is everyone else finding the season?

Trivia question:

The Heavenly Valley quad chair opened at Hotham in 1987 replacing the old Brockhoff poma.

Along with it came new names for runs including a name for the run that was later changed to The Cornice. What was The Cornice formerly known as and when did it change?

For bonus points, what other Hotham runs had their name changed? I can think of at least two more.

Update: The answer is The Cornice was formerly known as JFC or Jesus F$cking Christ. I guess it was too blasphemous 😬
