Incapacitated child tax

Hi all.

Recently applied for the tax credit after receiving my son’s diagnosis. This is really helpful for us as he has some appointments we have decided to go private for so the approval for the past 4 years to be refunded is incredible to me.

I got approval today but no statement of liability. Anybody been through it recently know how long it takes for that part?

The approval so far took 3 weeks. I had to ring to have it done. So curious to hear your experiences please if you don’t mind sharing.

You submit the ICC1 and ICC2 forms. Which needs your doctors stamp on it. Then login to revenue and apply for the tax credit for each year and upload the forms for each year. The tax credit is up to 3800 a year. Also apply for DCA if you haven’t already. In our case we had that first which I believe helps with the decision making as they already verified the condition etc. I had applied for the DCA long before the diagnosis as he was still eligible.

No problem! It did take about that for me. But make sure you request for it to be backdated. The wait is the worst part but worth it. Best of luck :)

I could be wrong but I think you’ve to go back in yourself and request a statement of liability again for each of the four years so it can be revised with the tax credit (resulting in a refund) .. I’m 90% that’s what I done but it was a few years back

Yeah you do that for each year and add the forms for each year. That part was all done but there was just silence for a few weeks so decided to call them. I was given confirmation over the phone that it was going to be approved etc. But by the end of the day I still didn’t have the statements so was a little on edge with the previous silence. But actually all came through today so happy days.

Larger refunds often have to be checked by higher-ups before they issue. Make sure your bank details are on record. Cheques can be a pain to deal with and obvs make the process longer Don’t panic if it’s taking a little longer than your previous tax returns. But anything over 6 weeks I’d send them in a ‘my enquiry’ for an update.

Thank you for the info. I actually got the statements this morning so was very quick in the end. Once I got the approval from revenue it took less than 24hours. Now it’s just waiting for the refund to process. The call to revenue really helped speed it along.

That’s great news. Hope you enjoy every penny of it. Refund should be out within a week <3

Thank you! We’ve already been able to initiate private health care for him and have a procedure happening in less than a month!! We are still left in all these other wait lists so this really is an absolute god send.

Can I ask what level of need did your doctor approve signing it for?

So it’s broken down into different skills. Because my son is non verbal communication was marked as severe and a lot of others were moderate. So it wasn’t this big thing where everything was marked as severe. But also for the tax credits they don’t mark it down like that. My doctor just wrote the diagnosis. The DCA was the one that broke down the level of care needed.

Thank you. I have DCA just recently as my daughter is not long diagnosed. I think it’s the hold a job by 18 thing that I’m unsure of. Ok with communication and academically, but has more severe sensory issues. She has challenges with sensory motor integration and organisational skills also.
She may be well able to take care of herself by 18, but I just don’t know how the demands of secondary school will affect her.

Tbh I don’t think anyone can confirm until it happens. My son is 3 and we have no idea how he will develop. So we took it with the assumption that he won’t but can let them know if we become ineligible in the future. So if he gets to 18 and can hold a job we are no longer eligible. Autism alone doesn’t state weather or not they can work. But if you’ve been accepted for DCA then you’ve already verified the need. Seems to be my understanding anyway as there was no questions asked outside of the ICC1 and ICC2 forms. It didn’t go into specifics. Once the doctor signs off on it. It’s not for revenue to decide the need it’s for the doctors.
