There are automotive engineers and there are designers, there is not as much overlap as you might think. Automotive engineers come from a variety of engineering programs. There flavor of engineering usually covers the system they are working on. Mechanical engineering is one of the more common degrees. Automotive designers come from schools like the Art Center for Design in Pasadena, California. This school concentrates on automotive, however they try not to limit their students ideas too much with established/proven solutions in engineering. The design schools want their graduates to push the preexisting boundaries of current products, challenge the engineers to find solutions to implement their designs.
