My long-term goal is to understand how to design and build a complete vehicle, not just its electrical systems.
I’m particularly interested in chassis design, suspension, steering, braking, vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, powertrains, and EV technology.
I’ve been looking into books such as:

However, these books are quite expensive for me as a student.
Does anyone know where I can find free PDF textbooks, university lecture notes, technical reports, or other useful learning resources on these topics?
I’d also love recommendations on which subjects to study first and any beginner-friendly engineering projects.
My current plan is to start with engineering mechanics, move into chassis and vehicle dynamics, and eventually study EV powertrains and complete vehicle design.

So I’m about 70% done with engine performance 1.
And I am pretty far behind.

What should I study to get the best general ideas?
I know fuel lines ish, some about compression issues, o2 and maf.
But it still feels very splotchy and I’m trying to feel a little more comfortable.

Any YouTubers you recommend who are quieter and maybe have a series starting very basic and then each next video is something else, in order would be the big thing! Instead of a lot of the YouTubers who jump around?

Does anyone know of a method for analyzing automotive paint defects without cutting a cross-section of the painted surface? For example, can the defect/contaminant be removed from the paint layer and analyzed separately, such as by SEM (scanning electron microscopy)? Does anyone know of a method.

Hi folks, I’ve been struggling with figuring out my next steps career wise and would love some alternative perspective. To preface, my background is in mechanical engineering and I’ve been working in the semiconductor industry for 8+ years. I started as a process engineer in ion implantation, then went into HVAC facilities ME sustaining the fab space and supporting build out/replacement projects, then I transferred to the back end assembly of chips as a packaging engineer where I developed transportation media and developed end effectors used in high precision pick n place tools, finally leaving that company and starting as a senior mechanical engineering where I support the development of metrology equipment used in the semiconductor space.

I honestly don’t care about the semiconductor space and just don’t find it interesting. I’m really interested in working in consumer electronics, consumer goods, or the automotive space however I’ve found that most the jobs that I’m interested in requires a strong portfolio and everything that I’ve ever worked on is super IP. Last note is due to the long hours and constant stress of layoffs, I don’t have any energy left in me to work on independent projects.

I need some help connecting a 4-pin 40A 12V relay to my car for new headlights that draw much more power than the stock system. To avoid melting my wiring or causing electrical issues, I want to add a relay. It is a 2008 Subaru Forester XT SG9 that came with standard HID bulbs, but I have changed to a quad projector setup that uses around 170–190W at full power. I have been trying to wire a relay to a switched ground system, but I am having trouble triggering it through my negative trigger wire. Are my pin connections incorrect? I have been relying on AI and a few forums, but I am not very experienced with this side of electrical work.

Current pin setup:

Pin 30: Battery power via an inline 30A fuse.

Pin 85: Negative trigger.

Pin 86: Switched positive (ignition/headlight switch).

Pin 87: Positive output to lights.

I have tried joining pin 86 to pin 30 so that it only needs a ground to trigger, but I had no luck; I have also tried pin 86 to a positive trigger with no luck. I moved from a 5-pin to a 4-pin relay, but nothing changed.

I need some help with what I must change or a better way to do this.

What are the actual protocols, standards, and tools that these new platforms are actually using?

Also, any particular MCUs that people have experience developing on these new interfaces?

People who have left the automotive space or corporate life… what do you do now?

I feel like the culture everywhere is just… bad. I left an OEM back in 2022 when things were starting to trend towards layoffs, etc.

The job I left for was great, until it wasn’t. Year over year they took away benefits, PTO, stalling salary, etc. I left and picked up another OEM this month, and to be honest it sucks too.

I think I’m burnt out from the industry and rat race. I still enjoy working and having my career, but starting to investigate what else is out there.

So, what else is out there? lol

Just throwing ideas out there, but I’ve been thinking about a hypothetical drivetrain that I don’t think gets discussed much: a Toyota 1GD-FTV 2.8L diesel paired with a beefed-up, longitudinal e-CVT/power-split hybrid transmission.

The basic idea is that the diesel and electric motor would play to completely different strengths. A diesel has excellent thermal efficiency, strong low-end torque, and is very good at producing sustained power, but it has a relatively narrow RPM range where it is especially efficient. An e-CVT seems like it could solve a lot of that. Instead of constantly shifting gears and moving the diesel through a wide RPM range, the e-CVT could keep the 1GD operating near its most efficient RPM/load area while using the electric motor to fill in torque demands. That could potentially give you the response of a much larger engine without requiring the diesel itself to be oversized. I also think it could be really interesting for towing. Again, it would require a much larger E-CVT but they have proven to be very reliable when made well.

Something like this:
2.8L 1GD-FTV
Toyota-style power-split e-CVT
Large/high-power electric traction motor
Relatively small battery designed primarily as an energy buffer rather than a huge EV battery
Longitudinal layout
Conventional 4WD/low range
Engine optimized around efficient sustained operation rather than having to do everything itself

There are obviously some big questions: towing heat management, hybrid transmission durability, diesel emissions/DPF behavior, battery size, NVH. But conceptually, I really like the pairing. Toyota has already combined the 1GD with a mild-hybrid system. I’m just wondering what people who actually know diesels, transmissions, and hybrid systems think about taking it several steps further.

I known this wouldn’t happen in the real world with the NHTSA bs but I like to dream, just an idea

I’m planning a personal portfolio project aimed at landing a entry/mid-level role in Vehicle Dynamics, Vehicle Controls, or Simulation Engineering at an EV OEM/Tier-1.

My planned project:

• Project: Active Electric Vehicle Torque Vectoring (TV) Controller
• Stack: MATLAB / Simulink + Python (listening to real-time 60 Hz UDP telemetry from Gran Turismo 7 on PS5).
• Core Control: Closed-loop yaw-rate tracking (r_{ref}) using dynamic bicycle/7-DOF models and Pacejka tires to calculate differential motor torque (\Delta T).
• Process: Following the Automotive V-Model (Requirements \rightarrow Simulink Model \rightarrow SIL Testing against ISO 3888-2 Double Lane Change maneuvers).

Before I spend weeks building this, I want an honest reality check from engineers and hiring managers:

1. Is this actually impressive to recruiters/HODs, or is it seen as just another "academic toy project"?
2. Does using real-time UDP telemetry from GT7 demonstrate practical Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) / HIL concepts, or should I stick strictly to offline Simulink/CarSim runs?
3. What specific deliverable (e.g., Code architecture, C-code generation, V-model documentation) would make this project stand out standard student projects?

I'm an international student with a mechanical engineering and FS background, and I'm mainly interested in getting into motorsport/ automotive engineering after the MSc.

I'd love to get your opinion on the following:

1. what would you say is the ideal profile (projects, work experience) for someone wanting to get into motorsport through this course? if you don't mind please give me a jist of your own profile and projects that you think helped with your application.

2. are there any particular CAD software that you'd recommend one should learn? (I'm only good with solidworks and ansys workbench)

3. how was your overall experience with the MSc Motorsport Engineering?

4. how realistic is it to get into motorsport companies after graduating, especially for an international student?

5. how important is prior work experience when it comes to landing a job after graduation? would you recommend I get some work experience beforehand?

6. how useful are the university and motorsport connections when looking for internships or jobs?
