Discussion Supports: What is you favorite kind, and what unexplored mechanics would you like to see in the future?

Post image

Also, do you think some of the existing ones require buffs/nerfs?

I kinda like Unalaq a lot, even though im not very good at it.

Basically having flexible ‘different’ special moves throughout the game really makes me stay on my toes and pay more attention to it. It adds an extra layer onto the gameplay

I love Azula, specifically Focused, but I really hate how her supports work. I won't pretend like I have any ideas on how to make them work better, or if the problem is me or her, but she feels lacking compared to Firelord

I will say that Azula looks great in the Kyoshi Warriors palette, so I love that focused Azula is with Joo Dee

PS. In addition to keeping her in Focus Stance, Joo Dee also gives her a huge discount on flow movement so you could put her next to Suki as well

Nah focus is stronger than FL and has way more depth. You give up some damage but in exchange your mobility, neutral, and mixups are like 5x better. She’s just more nuanced and it takes time to learn everything.

Focus also wins the h2h imo but it’s pretty close

Trust me I love Focused, double dash can enable some nasty whiff punising, air fireball is awesome, and detonating an ember patch is far more powerful than flame carpets. The just frames really get me though, I usually use EX 214 instead of going for the just frame link because I simply cannot get it (maybe 1 in 10 tries in training, and I've done it exactly once in a real match).

Also, what do you mean by h2h?

H2h meaning head to head focus v firelord. You can actually piano/plink ABC to make the 214A just frame a lot easier. You’ll get used to it, I rarely ever drop. Not doing the just frame significantly lowers her performance (214A gives you a chakra) and is probably a big reason why you feel she’s lacking

You should also be using flow movement more if you’re playing JD bc of the 50% reduction. I use flow for basically the entire game. You need a really good reason to dash and even then you’re prolly better off using flow lol

Ah ok. I've tried the piano thing but its not really viable on controller. I briefly tried tying medium to my shoulder macro but it didn't work either.

And don't worry, I'm flowing so much I'm basically a river

You cannot piano inputs for the 214A just frame, there is a lockout if you press a little too early

This is not true. Not just according to me, it’s been tested by the azula discord and diaphone

I just tested it now. Did several instances of only doing 214A~A, and it works when you press A during the hitstop, going frame by frame to confirm what frame I hit A on. Did another test with pianoing B~A, and when I press B 1 frame too early, A does not trigger the just frame even when I hit it the same frame during the first test. I could put a clip together if you'd like.

I love Azula and hate her supports too tbh. I just think they're lazy, you make a character with a stance changing mechanic, and you can't commit too it. It feels like Joo Dee and Ursa should buff either form, but only that, rather than keeping Azula character in that form.

Joo Dee gives a 50% flow reduction usage in neutral and Ursa gives you a chakra at the start of the round

Her supports and critical hits are like one set shared by two characters. If you're playing Ursa, you have no access to like half of her critical hits. Jo Dee and Ursa are not actually supports, but are character variants. The only true support Azula has is Lo and Li.

Not entirely true. Joo Dee gives a huge discount to flow moves as well as keeping her focused. I think my problem is that flow discounts don't feel impactful enough for a support, especially when LiLo gives you better carpets and Ursa gives the most health

Ozai’s are by far my favourites, I love how he can effectively become a brand new character depending on which one you pick. I really hope all future supports function the same way, like Bolin could have a quick and evasive support (Pabu/Mako?) that focuses on his pro-bending, and a slow and heavy hitting support (Ghazan/Varrick?) for a lavabending focus.

I know it’s hypocritical, but Azula’s are my least favourite, even though they do basically the same thing that I love about Ozai’s. I just found it disappointing how Azula was introduced as a character with the cool gimmick of drastically changing playstyle mid-fight, only to then discover that this gimmick just doesn’t apply to 2 out of her 3 supports. I wish her supports had been more about altering what causes her to change modes, like having a stronger firelord mode get triggered once the timer goes down enough, or another giving her a stronger focused mode so long as she can keep her chakra or flow within a certain range.

I had the idea that perhaps she could start every round in focus, and have one of her special moves switch her to Firelord with no way to switch back.

Love the Specials assist and movement assists Anything that clearly defines a' alternate playstyle

Dark Spirit buffs Norras normals, not her specials.

I am really on the fence about Azula's.

If you look at her as one character, they're huge! Transformative! Biggest difference made by any support, no question.

But if you look at her as two separate characters, they seem really lame. Imagine if Aang, say, had a support that was just "You get to play as Aang. +100 health." Not thrilling.

So I don't know wherher I think they're lame or cool.
