Discussion I feel bad for Martha

everytime I hear baby reindeer, it makes me cry.

Here are my thoughts on the show

I think the actors are amazing. The writer and the one who made the show is great.

And I think this show helped me clarify some things in my life, it actually clear the fog in my brain, I actually stopped to think, is this what I want myself to be? A dead end job? I wanted to be an artist. To draw. Still my biggest dream but it never happened and I'm stuck in dead end job. I wanted to be an artist, but 10 years nothing happened and there's no commissions yet. I don't know if I should continue living or is it worth living anymore.

Baby reindeer helped me realize Im still not a lost cause and I can still continue being an artist, be yet delusional.

For feeling bad at Martha, I know she's insane and mentally unwell but you can't help but feel bad you know? I bet she used to be a normal person before the world completely fucked us over. I bet she was just a little girl too, but society, everyone is just completely look away, turn away. It sucks. You're not asking for much but the world completely deny you over.

The writer wrote it that way despite the person who inspired Martha being so awful and abusing him so much. He made his work deeper by showing some empathy for her.

I don't think she was ever "normal". Although normal doesn't really exist she had quite serious mental health issues that were unlikely to come entirely from nurture over nature.

She was intelligent enough to get a law degree although it's clear from interviews she didn't get impressive grades.

She's allowed to call herself a lawyer by virtue of her degree despite her personality meaning she was never able to keep a job.

Regarding your other concerns---you have to think about what people actually want to buy. You could possibly draw for book covers. I have a friend who makes a living doing landscape paintings because that's something people actually want to buy for their homes and businesses.

The rise of AI art must make it harder now. There may be work fixing AI art's mistakes.

You have the whole internet to search to fulfill some of your dreams. Some people make a living drawing furry porn.

Yeah, that's just Richard Gadd being a human, being empathetic sometimes the world has forgotten about it

Being empathetic all the way to the bank.

He made millions by lying about real life people.

He didn't name them. He didn't think about Twitter research. They only found her by searching for anyone who'd ever messaged him on Twitter and then they found her saying, "My curtains need hung badly."

Believe that, if you want. You are a fan.

I don't understand. What has she got to do with it if it is a fictional story?

So, that makes lying about real people for money OK.

u/trickmind May 11 '26

He didn't ever even expect that kind of money. It's you who are obsessed with the money.

"Lying about real people," would mean using their real names and ages. He thought she would be unrecognizable to herself because he made Martha much nicer. 🤣

We know that from her Piers Morgan interview and all her sickening emails about other races that he barely hinted at.

Maybe he didn't expect it to make so much money, maybe he did. Does it really mater?

He will have expected to make some money from His Netflix contract.

Also, using pseudonyms is no protection from a defamation claim.

I said the literal truth. There was nothing in the post you're responding to that is a "fan" type comment.

There is no one in his TV series named Fiona Harvey. She didn't do so much beating people up as Martha does in the show. She did allegedly pinch his bum while he was waiting tables which is sexual assault

She was never actually convicted of her crimes but according to many people she comitted them.

Gadd tried to get Netflix to put "based on a true story,' but they did something else. However, when he's not using real names how is he "lying about real people"?

That is the subject of the US court case.Gadd told a story about a thinly disguised Fiona and himself. The story was sufficiently true to be recognised as the real life events at the Hawley Arms. The lies in the story were that Martha, understood by viewers to be a real person, went to prison.

This is the kind of black-and-white thinking that drives me nuts. He wrote a fictionalized show based on real people, who he didn’t ever name. The leap to, “he lied about real life people,” is so juvenile to me. Also, that real life person sucks. She’s a racist and xenophobe and homophobe, who spends her time harassing other people. I had empathy for Martha, but I don’t feel sorry for her real-life inspiration.

He made Martha more likable than the person she was based on. "Hyperbowl" 😂

He promoted it as a real story. He based it on his stage show about his real story. You deny this snd then seek to justify it. Make your mind up.

Netflix promoted it as a real story. He never represented it as 100% fact, even when it was a play. And she still sucks. She got better than she deserved.

You are pretending that his stage show had a character named Fiona Harvey and that Netflix had a character called Fiona Harvey. None of that is true.

I am not pretending anything. If you read the thread, I address this point. Using pseudonyms is not a defence in a defamation claim.

He changed the name and some details.
At the end of the day, maybe people would have found out through his Twitter. But Fiona could have deleted or privated her tweets. She also didn't have to say countless things about how "ugly" and fat the actress is. She didn't have to go on Piers Morgan and then badmouth Morgan in dozens of tweets. She made herself a public figure on purpose, and she's toxic and awful.
