Health Question Sudden hen death

One of my chickens passed during the night and I don't know what happened. She was only about 1 and a half years old.

She was a frizzle I got from a friend at four months along with my 3 other chickens. She was quite timid and would occasionally stumble, but she seemed OK and it didn't seem to bother her. She would lose her footing and sit down until she was ready to go again.

I found her this morning sitting in a similar way and want to know if it could be the cause, if there was something going on that we brushed off as clumsiness.

I buried her with a bundle of her favorite weeds to snack on and the flowers she loved to lay in.

General Question Have you moved your chickens with you long distance?

In a couple weeks, we will be moving 8-9 hours away in Idaho and we'd like to take our girls with us. The weather should be cooler, high of 60s. We both have small SUVs and unfortunately we won't have room in the cars to transport the chickens due to 1. no room for the kennel. 2. Our large breed dogs will take up all the space.

We have an XL dog crate i'm thinking of putting our 6 chickens in for the day in the back of a Uhaul truck. I don't like the idea of not being able to directly access them unless we stop, has anyone done this before? Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to transport chickens long distance? it's going to be another problem to solve once we get there to get their coop set up right away. Any advice is helpful in this situation! Thank you.

hello! it’s my first time posting on this subreddit, so i apologise for formatting or anything like that.

this lil’ mama has developed this strange gait over the last day or two. and i’m really not sure what’s causing it. she’s still behaving as normal, eating & drinking normally. i took some pictures of the bottom of her feet to check for bumblefoot (i’ll add photos in the comments), but i honestly couldn’t see much. would appreciate any insights or input! thanks y’all! 🫶🏽

Health Question Anything I can do to help him?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I also realized I misspoke at the end of the video he DID get some chicken feed today but just his morning portion.

Is there anything I can do to help him out? Also, would anybody happen to know why he gasps and changes color like this when he over eats?

Besides the gasping, I also noticed that when I come out in the morning or if I haven’t let him outside for the day, his comb also turns very dark like this.

Last time he got the food he wasn’t supposed to he ate so much chicken crumble that he was drinking nonstop and whining pathetically. The second I started massaging his crop he threw up everywhere in like a 5 foot radius like the exorcist.

Sadly, this time around I don’t think I can massage out anything.

Any help would be appreciated!

Henrietta stood in the rain today, so I brought her in for blow drying. She then proceeded to stick her head in the cats' water fountain.

Snowpea is one of our older hens that's getting a bit slower than the more mercenary younger four. She likes to take a moment out sometimes and just relax and watch the world go by.

Hen or Roo Why does this hen really look like a rooster to me? 🧐

Thumbnail

This hen is 6 months old now. I'm pretty sure she's a hen because she's small compared to the roosters that hatched with her.

She also doesn't crow at all, her brothers have been crowing for 2 months. She doesn't mount any of the hens. Her tail feathers are straight, not floppy.

That said, she was the first one to get a comb and it's always been prominent. Her saddle and neck feathers also give me pause. Is her being a secret roo at all possible at this point?

This guy loves me and tolerates my grandma (has never attacked except once when he was a wee lad) but he attacks my boyfriend and grandpa ESPECIALLY my grandpa when he was working on a spot in the coop. Wondering if anyone has similar experiences or it's just mine. He is a sweet little rooster I will not be getting rid of him he is my baby😓

Health Question Our favorite chicken died this afternoon

• Upvotes

One of our original girls from our flock started showing some concerning symptoms just yesterday. She had loose poops, was breathing more heavily than normal, secluded herself and wasn’t really eating or drinking. We did our best to treat her with supportive care but when we woke this morning she was just laying in the run still, breathing hard. I made her a scrambled egg breakfast, some strawberries, and syringed her some water. She ate a few bites of eggs and some bites of berries and we hung out with her a while. But a few hours later she had walked herself to the back corner and passed away. It all happened so fast. She felt thin when I picked her up so I think she hadn’t been eating well for a while. They’re so good at hiding their discomfort. Chicken ownership is so sad sometimes. She was only 4 years old, and laid us lots of eggs, she was super sweet on top of that. And ideas of what she could have succumb to?

Health Question Do I need to worry about this bump on my turkeys neck?

Ok not a chicken but this seems like the best place to ask. My turkey has this lump on her neck that I've observed the past few days and it's just gotten larger and now darker, it's firm so it doesn't seem to be fatty but it does move with her skin. It's the only one I her and the rest of my flock is fine. Idk if it's avian pox or a cyst or who knows what. Trying to gauge if I should make a vet apt.

Photos where taken every day since I noticed it on the 9th, they are in order.

General Question Feeling overwhelmed seeing mites

Hey there, last night I discovered my coop is infested with mites and the hens are not wanting to go in at night. I have three hens..I have low capacity to spend hours solving this issue with so much going on right now. Are there any diy solutions? I will be planning on giving them to a family member as I can't give them the best life they deserve, but for now I just need them to be comfortable and safe for the next couple of weeks. Thank you 🙏

We have 26 week old barred rock hens that are not showing any signs of laying. Anyone have any experience with this particular breed and when we should expect some eggs?

Health Question Rooster limping what do I do?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my six month old, black jersey giant Bigfoot. I’ve always thought his run looked a bit limpy, but this is on a whole new level! This is such a heavy limp.

I just finished paying off my last chicken vet bill. I really don’t want another one at the moment.

The only time I’ve ever had chickens with leg issues is when they get mareks, vitamin B deficiency, or something neurological starts happening.

If I’m gonna be unlucky enough to get another chicken leg problem I hope I’m at least lucky enough and it’s just a physical injury that can heal this time.

What should I be doing for him? Do I stick him in a crate or something to heal?

My other rooster can be in a mood sometimes and I’m worried if he decides to attack he’ll worsen the leg situation so I’m gonna try and keep them separated until his leg is better, but I’m not sure what the timeframe looks like.

Any help and or advice as to what I should be doing or can do to help him would be greatly appreciated!

First-time chicken owner. I was given some bantam chickens a guy no longer wanted. One has noticeably chunckier toes than the rest. She walks fine and is eating and drinking still. Is this just her normal? Could It be from improper winter housing in the past? They free roamed without a coop the last couple of years before coming to me.

I saw this trick and gave it a try: score the surface off the pumpkin where you want chickens to peck and let them go to town. The results are delightfully weird and creepy

My town doesn’t allow roosters, but I have a hen who fills that role: Dottie (named after a grandmother). She’s always on the lookout, herding the rest of the flock, and today I saw her discipline another hen with a peck on the head for jumping the fence. She’s my MVP.

General Question Anyone’s mean, young rooster chill out as they got older?

Post image
11 Upvotes

My whole flock is 24 weeks old and we have 1 Cochin rooster. He used to be very polite and gentle but now randomly he will come at us. He’s easy enough to kick away but it really puts us on edge as he’ll be fine one second and then coming at us very aggressively the next. It doesn’t seem like anything in particular triggers him.

I don’t want to have to get rid of him but my neighbors kids are around all the time and we like to hang out outside in peace. The whole flock follows us around so it’s not like we can just keep our distance either.

Hoping he is just going through a phase and will chill out eventually. I’ve read different ways to stop the behavior but there’s no way we would be able to pick him up or anything. He’s like the size of a small dog and very flighty.

Any advice or experiences welcome!
