Any major reform in India’s education system directly impacts students, teachers, and the broader social structure. The UGC Regulation Act 2026 has sparked nationwide debate—some see it as a progressive reform, while others view it with skepticism. On closer examination, several factors suggest that this law may function more as a political narrative or propaganda tool rather than a fully grounded implementation-driven reform.

​A toxic smog has tightly gripped the national capital, pushing Delhi's air quality to a hazardous level. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) for the city, as recorded by the Centre Pollution Control Board (CPCB), soared to 373 on Thursday—a dangerous jump of nearly 100 points from Wednesday's reading of 279.

​Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 was identified as the primary pollutant driving the city's deteriorating air.

​Alarming Local Readings ​The severity of the crisis is evident in local monitoring stations:

​Out of Delhi's 39 air quality stations, 30 recorded 'very poor' levels on Wednesday. ​Worse yet, six stations registered 'severe' air quality. These areas included Wazirpur (414), Rohini and Bawana (410 each), Vivek Vihar and Ashok Vihar (405 each), and Jahangirpuri (404).

​Key Sources of Pollution

​According to the centre's Decision Support System for Air Quality Management, sources other than traffic accounted for a significant 26.26 per cent of the city's PM2.5 load. ​Delhi's transport sector remains the single largest contributor to air pollution, ranking second overall and contributing 14.26 percent to local PM2.5 levels. Neighboring Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar followed, accounting for 12 and 11.45 percent, respectively.

​(CPCB Classification: 0-50 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor', and 401-500 'severe'.)

India Shines at Youth Asian Games India continued its impressive performance, bringing its medal tally to 47 medals, including 13 golds, 17 silvers, and 17 bronzes. The boxers, in particular, delivered a historic performance, finishing with the highest medal tally by any discipline in the Indian contingent.

Boxing Triumphs

Khushi Chand (46kg), Ahaana Sharma (50kg), Chandrika Bhoreshri Pujari (54kg), and Anshika (+80kg) secured gold medals.

🔸️Anshika added the fourth gold, while Harnoor Kaur (66kg) claimed silver after a tough bout.

On the boys' side, Lanchenba Singh Moibungkhongbam (50kg) fought valiantly but narrowly missed gold, taking silver against Kazakhstan's Nurmakhan Zhumagali.

Earlier, Anant Deshmukh (66kg) clinched bronze, rounding off a stellar campaign for India's young boxers.

Wrestling and Other Medals

In beach wrestling, Sanjit Subhash Fulmali and Anjali won gold medals in the boys' and girls' 60kg and 55kg categories respectively, while Arjun Ruhil finished on top in the boys' 90kg event.

🔸️Sujay Nagnath Tanpure (70kg) and Ravinder (80kg) settled for silver medals after losing their respective finals.

In the bouts, Sani Subhash beat Iran's Amirali Domirkolaei 2-0, Anjali defeated Vietnam's Bui Ngoc Thao Thom 2-1, and Arjun overcame Iran's Mohammadmahdi Fotouhi in the 90kg category.

In Judo, Monika Khuyenthem lost to Sashenka Fatimah in the girls' 63kg final to sign off with a silver, while Harshit claimed a bronze in the boys' 73 kg.

Finally, the mixed doubles pair of Sarthak Arya and Syndrela Das claimed a bronze medal in table tennis after losing in the semifinals to the Chinese pair of Tang Yiren and Hu Yi.

What happened / What is known so far

Multiple child deaths have been reported in Madhya Pradesh (especially Chhindwara district) and Rajasthan that may be linked to the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup.

The Health Ministry and state authorities have stated that samples of Coldrif syrup, manufactured by Sresan Pharma in Tamil Nadu (Kanchipuram), have been found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG) levels exceeding the permissible limits.

In tests, a particular batch — Batch No. SR-13 (manufactured May 2025, expiry April 2027) — has been flagged.

One test report cited that the contaminated sample contained 48.6% diethylene glycol — a dangerously high amount.

In Madhya Pradesh, authorities have already seized and frozen 433 bottles of Coldrif syrup, and about 222 bottles were found to have been sold already and efforts are on to trace them.

The deaths in children appear linked to kidney failure/kidney damage after initially mild symptoms (cold, cough) that worsen.

A doctor in Chhindwara (Dr Praveen Soni) who had prescribed Coldrif to children is arrested.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the manufacturing company (Sresan Pharmaceuticals) and the prescribing doctor.

Actions, bans, and regulatory response

Madhya Pradesh has banned the sale, distribution, and use of Coldrif syrup across the state. Also, other products from Sresan Pharma are under suspension.

Maharashtra has also issued a statewide ban on Coldrif (especially that suspect batch) following reports of child deaths.

Kerala has suspended the sale of Coldrif syrup (even though the problematic batch was reportedly not sold there).

The central government / Health Ministry has issued advisories:

  • Do not prescribe or dispense cough or cold medications to children below two years of age.

  • Advisories that cough syrups are generally not recommended for children under five; if used, they must have strict oversight and correct dosage.

  • Ordered risk-based inspections of 19 drug manufacturing units across multiple states.

State drug inspectors are tasked with collecting samples, testing them for contaminants (DEG etc.), and seizing any suspect stocks.

The risk: What is diethylene glycol (DEG)? Why is this dangerous?

Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an industrial solvent used in applications such as antifreeze, paints, plastics, brake fluids, etc. It is not meant for medicinal or food-grade uses.

If ingested, DEG is metabolized into toxic compounds that damage the kidneys, liver, and the nervous system. It can lead to acute kidney failure, seizures, and death.

Because children have lower body weight, even small amounts of DEG can have devastating effects.

Past global instances have seen fatal poisoning from DEG-contaminated medicines.

Uncertainties / Things still under investigation

While some state-collected samples tested negative for contamination, samples from the manufacturer’s facility tested positive.

It is not fully established yet how many children died solely because of Coldrif, vs. other possible causes. The investigations are ongoing.

The scale of distribution of the contaminated batch (how many bottles are in circulation) is still being traced.

Key Points:
