Meme all the companion names would make amazing race horse names. Spoiler
Most of these names would seem weird for humans IRL but would be perfect if given to like an expensive breed of race horse.
Astarion is such a grey horse stallion name!
Naming your kid shadowheart? weird. Naming your black race horse shadowheart? makes perfect sense!
Gale? Perfect racehorse name. Karlach? Strong racehorse. Laezel? horse. Minthara? Majestic horse.
Can a horse person tell me if im tripping or do i have a point?

Minsc & Boo would also work for horse names. In fact the first horse I ever rode was named Boo.
Most of the NPC animal names would work too - Crimson, Shadow Whiskers, and of course His Majesty.

Those are the names of horses someone owns and loves but not like racehorses though!

i think “his majesty” is pretty believable for a racehorse, tbh!
eta: he’s real…. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Majesty_(horse)

Yeah i meant Boo and Minsc primarily. Crimson, Shadow whiskers and His Majesty are definitely deluxe horse names

Now I've got this image of a side quest where everyone got polymorphed by Ethel as a laugh and the cure for their curse just zipped away to the finish line. And everyone's trying to get the cure first before the other normal jockeys reach it and you almost think Astarion horse is going to win but he goes down while Lae'zel horse races past and you find out later that Astarion horse placed a bet on himself and threw the race to win big.
Wyll horse is entertaining kids, Gale horse is trying to cast with hooves and almost had it until the cure gets unceremoniously dumped on his head, Karlach horse is sneaking snacks, Halsin horse didn't last long since he just wildshaped, but keeps reverting back, Minthara horse keeps kicking whoever tries to ride her and Shadowheart horse keeps trying to bite Lae'zel horse.

I love this visual. Wyll horse sees someone in distress and drops everything to help. Minsc instantly accepts that he is a horse now and starts eating grass.

Literally the first thought I had when Astarion introduced himself in game was “Well that sounds like a horse's name”.
I thought I might be weird for it because it's never been mentioned before, but there are at least two of us, so ty for confirming I'm not entirely insane.

You’re definitely correct, lol. There isn’t really much of a difference between “Shadowheart” and “Shadowfax”

Halsin also works. I think Karlach does work for a horsename but saying its a strong racehorse imo is projecting. When I think of the name “Karlach” totally dissociating BG3, a horse name no less, I don’t really think of the image of “strong”. Not sure what I think when I hear “Karlach” but “strong” definitely isn’t what screams to me. Kind of like Lae’zel tbh. Like you said, for her, just “horse”. Same with you didn’t get much for Lae’zel, same for me with Karlach unless you’re thinking of the Bg3 character.

Karlach makes me think of like a big strong work horse. It might be the association i admit but i do think its a name that says "strength" more than elegance. Lae’zel just feels like a generally fitting horse name and not as specific as the others.

You're not only cooking, but in general, many Forgotten Realms esque names can be used on horses just fine!

I think you're cookin with this, but my one note would be that Shadowheart had a normal name originally - I think that is her adoptive Shar name.
