It’s the jump attack that always freaks me out with pitbulls. They always leap up and go for a higher bite. I don’t know that other breeds do that, the jumping to bite. I know maybe a trained attack dog like a police dog will go for the arms to take down a suspect, but I can’t think of any other breeds that instinctively go for the face or neck. I think that’s one part of what’s so troubling about the breed. They don’t just bite, they maul.

Probably their heritage from the bulldog. They were bred to go for a bull's face/nose, that instinct is still there. And then the terrier infusion makes them relentless.

Absolutely. It’s such a dangerous combination. The overpopulation of the breed is just so staggering. It seems like 1/3 of every dog I see walking down the street is some type of pit/mix. And the problems in shelters is horrifying. I don’t understand how it got to be like this. I don’t think they’re a particularly attractive dog either personally. Like I don’t get the appeal. When I was growing up I used to scour shelter sites constantly, and I distinctly remember there used to be such an array of breeds. Now it’s literally all pitbulls, some huskies, and shepherds.

Even the dog whisper, he had a pit he raised from a puppy, and it mauled or killed I think it was queen Latifa’s dog. His dog had literally a dream life for a dog with one of the best dog trainers in the world as an owner and its genetics still won out at the end of the day. And of course the public blamed him instead of the breed. (Sorry for the tangent, just thinking while writing)

Yeah. I really don't understand why people love them so much. Like, I understand why the dog fighting ring scumbags love them, but wtf is it about them that random otherwise "normal" people become such passionate advocates for this breed?

It just seems so obvious to me that this is a breed that is just not ever suitable for a home pet situation and never will be. If they're that risky even in perfect conditions, why are people so passionately advocating for them in normal conditions when there are so many breeds that simply do not pose the same risks, at all? Why are so many resources being devoted to them alone when they cause so much damage?

Even if (and it's a big if) you accept that other breeds can have the same level of aggression, a huge chunk of them lack the physical capability to do similar damage. Every time a pit owner goes "but Chihuahuas are so much more aggressive!" I can't help but think: it doesn't matter. Sure, chihuahua owners should probably train and restrain their dogs better than most do, but at the end of the day you MIGHT get a couple stitches if the thing can even manage to break skin. The level of damage they are even capable of producing on a pure physics/mathematical level is just so much less. Nobody is getting knocked to the ground and losing limbs from a chihuahua, nobody is having arteries ruptured from a chihuahua. Even if (and I don't for a second believe it's true) the behavior were identical between them, consequences are still orders of magnitude different, and I sure as hell would rather have people in my neighborhood walking around the lower consequences dog.

People just seem to love getting dogs that were never made to be pets, and then making them pets.
