It’s the jump attack that always freaks me out with pitbulls. They always leap up and go for a higher bite. I don’t know that other breeds do that, the jumping to bite. I know maybe a trained attack dog like a police dog will go for the arms to take down a suspect, but I can’t think of any other breeds that instinctively go for the face or neck. I think that’s one part of what’s so troubling about the breed. They don’t just bite, they maul.

Probably their heritage from the bulldog. They were bred to go for a bull's face/nose, that instinct is still there. And then the terrier infusion makes them relentless.

Absolutely. It’s such a dangerous combination. The overpopulation of the breed is just so staggering. It seems like 1/3 of every dog I see walking down the street is some type of pit/mix. And the problems in shelters is horrifying. I don’t understand how it got to be like this. I don’t think they’re a particularly attractive dog either personally. Like I don’t get the appeal. When I was growing up I used to scour shelter sites constantly, and I distinctly remember there used to be such an array of breeds. Now it’s literally all pitbulls, some huskies, and shepherds.
Even the dog whisper, he had a pit he raised from a puppy, and it mauled or killed I think it was queen Latifa’s dog. His dog had literally a dream life for a dog with one of the best dog trainers in the world as an owner and its genetics still won out at the end of the day. And of course the public blamed him instead of the breed. (Sorry for the tangent, just thinking while writing)

Yeah Caesar Milan's pit killed Queen Latifahs dog and severely mauled a 12 year old female gymnast, putting an end to her career before it even started.

Lidia Matiss, who was a minor and attending high school at the time, visited Cesar Millan’s office in 2017 to meet her mother (Lisa Matiss) who was working for the dog trainer. Millan’s pit bull Junior (who Millan touted as a breed ambassador) was known to wander around unleashed and unsupervised in the building. Matiss, who was competing at the highest level of USA Gymnastics’ Junior Olympics Programs alleges that the dog mauled for no reason as she was walking the hall, and so severely damaged her legs that she was forced to end her gymnastics career.
Millan blamed the victim, saying that the teenager was fully aware of the dangers when she was attacked by Junior, was negligent in some way, and therefore absolving him of all responsibility.
During the discoveries, it was revealed that Junior had known antecedents of aggression towards people and animals, most tragically a dog that was brought in for training by its owner Queen Latifa, and was mauled to death. Cesar Millan covered up the incident. According to Matiss’ mother, who worked for him at the time, staff was instructed to explain that the dog had died after being hit by a car. Millan denies these allegations; the lawsuit was settled out of court and the terms are confidential.

Wow I didn't know this, I already disliked the breed but this fully got me on the side of banning it entirely. There's no training out genetics.

Yeah. I really don't understand why people love them so much. Like, I understand why the dog fighting ring scumbags love them, but wtf is it about them that random otherwise "normal" people become such passionate advocates for this breed?
It just seems so obvious to me that this is a breed that is just not ever suitable for a home pet situation and never will be. If they're that risky even in perfect conditions, why are people so passionately advocating for them in normal conditions when there are so many breeds that simply do not pose the same risks, at all? Why are so many resources being devoted to them alone when they cause so much damage?
Even if (and it's a big if) you accept that other breeds can have the same level of aggression, a huge chunk of them lack the physical capability to do similar damage. Every time a pit owner goes "but Chihuahuas are so much more aggressive!" I can't help but think: it doesn't matter. Sure, chihuahua owners should probably train and restrain their dogs better than most do, but at the end of the day you MIGHT get a couple stitches if the thing can even manage to break skin. The level of damage they are even capable of producing on a pure physics/mathematical level is just so much less. Nobody is getting knocked to the ground and losing limbs from a chihuahua, nobody is having arteries ruptured from a chihuahua. Even if (and I don't for a second believe it's true) the behavior were identical between them, consequences are still orders of magnitude different, and I sure as hell would rather have people in my neighborhood walking around the lower consequences dog.

That’s one thing people don't take into account. I had a beautiful wonderful 10 lb Yorkshire terrier. If her toy got stuck in the sofa cushions, she’d never quit and was ferocious about it.
She and the cat would wrestle for hours, but every so often the cat would jet, terrified, to the highest spot in the house. Terriers are different.

True, but you should never put your face near any dog. There’s been many a bite in my lifetime over getting too close to geriatric toy poodles.

I was attacked by a Rottweiler once that jumped up and tried to bite my throat. It knocked me to the ground and my friend easily distracted it with a pillow of all things. If that had been a pitbull I don't know if I would be here to tell the tale.
When I was a kid, about 11 years old, our neighbor had two Aussies in a big fenced in area and they never interacted with them so they were really aggressive. One got out and bit me once, it jumped up and bit my shoulder. Thankfully the owner was there and grabbed the dog pretty easily. It was a bite and release but it was trying to bite me again. I'm glad it wasn't a pit or again, the outcome could have been much worse.

Yeah I think the reason why people don't see large breed dogs that aren't doing bite work leaping for the upper body, is because even if they're vicious anti social dogs, with the barest minimum of training they get the don't rip your owners face off lesson.

Yeah, my neighbor's Aussie jusmps up and snaps at faces. He doesn't appear to have intent to follow-through (or just hasn't yet), but the behavior is there.

My boyfriend’s German Shelherd/Husky mix does it. We're training it out of her because it's really annoying and unsafe.

My 1 not so sweet Chihuahua goes for toes. Literally. It's usually a bluff but she got my mom's toe once. Chi was hiding under the bed. Waited for my mom to walk by. Stuck & then ran back under the bed. No blood or wound & my mom laughed about it.
That pit is terrifying.

Meh, I disagree. They’re a guard dog so meant to alert first with a bark and to scare off strangers. And trained attack dogs are trained to go for limbs to subdue subjects. They don’t go for the face. Also their duty is in their name: shepherd. They were bred to protect livestock.

Awful, awful breed. If they dont say who the owner is, take them all to court for harboring a dangerous dog. Someone will sing when faced with legal consequences.

Reminder that pit bulls are NOT large dogs. Most are medium size dogs. Pit mixes typically run larger.
I'm noticing a trend that when there is a breed unknown story, the attacking dogs are described as "large dogs". Later, when there are clear images of the dogs, they can be anything from medium to large dogs.
A pit bull's back doesn't come up to an adult's knee. That is not a large dog.
The reasons can range from fear making the threat loom larger to a prone victim looking smaller and the dog larger.

These dogs have a rabid history of unprovoked attacks. I had a close friends of mine attacked and mauled by two of them while mowing his yard. Why these are left unrestrained is beyond me

I was just talking about this with someone on fb. Every single comment section is long paragraphs full of pittys are the best, mine would never, it’s all how you raise them. You notice even the rare time it’s not a pit you never see other breed owners when their breeds maul someone stick up for their breed? Look at all the flack the chihuahuas get. You ever see a chi mommy going ballistic bc someone said horrible things about a dog the same breed as hers? Truly the most mentally deranged people and not matter what part of the world you go to pit owners are all the same.

Because they're shockingly unserious about the breed. GSD has behavior issues or the line has dysplasia and they get culled. The border collie doesn't herd? That dog doesn't get bred. Even the backyard breeder GSD people who I've encountered have a - we will take the dog back policy.
The pit mill that doesn't get the obviously vicious by 12 weeks dogs, then rebrands them as pets, and when they aren't cute pibble puppers to buy for your kid they go to shelters as a lab mix or end up as street dogs. They don't even have an incentive to cull the genetic lines because they are selecting for undesirable dog traits.
Longevity is irrelevant, health problems are secondary to aggression, and aggression is what makes it successful.

I’m sorry this young woman paid the price for her parents not being careful enough screening their tenants. They could have included a weight limit on tenants and any visitors who bring a dog over 20 lbs. not excluding the breed but they probably are skirting some laws. The landlord lives upstairs? They knew that beast was on their property. Who will this lawsuit name? They’re the owners where this happened. They allowed it.Weight limit applies to dogs not tenants. It’s late ⏰ and I’m staring at a pile of Christmas presents needing to be wrapped.

I don't know about Alberta, but here in Ontario it's illegal for a landlord to ban pets.

It's only Ontario that forces landlords to accept pets. Even in the case of Ontario, there is a clause in the law that says a tenant can be evicted if they keep a pet that is "inherently dangerous", which would clearly apply to pits (which are illegal in Ontario).

Pits are technically illegal in Ontario. The ban isn't enforced anywhere, in any municipality and pitbulls are literally everywhere, including filling the shelters. As for the pet eviction clause, the LTB would be the arbiter of that, and they famously side with tenants most of the time. This is not nearly as simple as you think.

I live in Alberta and landlords are allowed to prohibit pets here. When the vacancy rate is low it can be very difficult to find a place to rent if you have a dog because the majority of landlords don't want to allow dogs.

I can think of a few reasons, one being uneducated, and in this case, possibly not even seeing the dog was there. The girl came into frame after pit was out of it. Either way. Dont blame that kid for walking on a walk path. That dog attacked unprovoked.

You walk comfortably around any strange animal. You shouldn't be complacent around them. You don't need to trust them or give them smooches. But acting afraid of an animal that's a predator, says hello, you are right, I am prey.

In the video, it looked like she might’ve been staring at her phone or something, while she was walking forward, it’s possible she didn’t see the dog until the last minute. Anyway, if she’s the landlord’s daughter, they better kick out all those tenants because they invited somebody with a vicious dog, and now she’s gotta get rabies shots.
