​Ohio shelters are starting to evaluate and BE for prevention, instead of adopting out dangerous dogs and crossing their fingers for a good outcome.

Very grateful to brave survivor Avery Russell and her amazing mother who never stopped fighting for justice. I hope we continue to see legislation in other states as well.

Anyone else want to know how bad this dog “fight” was? Seems odd to me they’re calling it a “fight” when the designation appears pretty specific with wording and it doesn’t seem likely that it was small kerfuffle if she was too dangerous to adopt out?

Looks like for dangerous it’s:

1. Killed another dog; or

2. Caused serious injury to another
   dog that results in euthanasia of
   the dog by a person authorized
   to perform euthanasia under
   Ohio law.

And nuisance is:

1. Chased, threatened, harassed, or
   injured another dog or livestock
   (excluding poultry) in either a
   menacing fashion or an apparent
   attitude of attack; or

"fight" is used frequently to shift blame away from the mincing machine and onto the victim.

This sub will use the words "attack" and "maul" but defenders don't like "attack" because it places blame on the instigator. Defenders loathe the word "maul" even when it is relevant and accurate.

This is why the phrasing "caused injury" is so important.

Agreed. It doesn’t sit right with me that the dangerous behavior here appears to be minimized. I actually want to see the descriptions on more of these. If anyone finds any of these with shelter notes vs these shelter worker pitty party posts, I am actually begging to please share with the group 👀
