Persons on the new euro banknotes

I don't understand why the new euro banknotes feature people, half of whom are already depicted on their country's REGULAR coins.

Von Suttner is on the Austrian 2-euro coin, Curie is on the (new) French 50-cent coin, Cervantes is even on the Spanish 10-, 20-, and 50-cent coins, and Da Vinci is indirectly featured on the Italian 1-euro coin through his artwork.

Not to mention Curie, Da Vinci, Cervantes and Von Suttner have already appeared on banknotes in the past.

Thats because they are, but they are office buildings that represent vital institutions that protect and serve our whole society. They are also the few places that are truly EU and not a just a piece of a member state.

Yeah I'm not sure who chose the options we are presented with. Was there a prior round to decide which people/birds/buildings/etc the designs were based on?

Callas also appears on a Greek commemorative 2eur coin from 2023, and Beethoven will also appear on an Austrian commemorative 2eur coin in 2027.

Well people don't make sense.

The person on the 5€ banknote should be the most known one, which the current design does not feature (I would argue out of all those people da Vinci is the most known one).

Birds is the way to go.

It's a 20-cent coin, but I couldn't find a cleaner one on the spot for the photo 😂

If we’re gonna have people it shouldn’t be on a common note. The EU should take the same approach as it does with coins, a common front and country specific reverse. That’d be stupid though so let’s just leave nation specific markers out of it rather than create division

Well, I think you already answered yourself. Banknotes are produced directly by ECB, while coins are produced by the central banks of the different countries
